All this fannying around converting shit is a right pain in the titter at times.
I've been playing flacs on Cowon players for over 5 years.
Winamp is what I use to play/burn Flac, works fine.

Winamp to Pod or Winamp to CD to Pod is proving a nightmare for me at the moment. Will investigate further this weekend unless you have a quick solution!!. |

Not sure what you mean by it proving to be a nighmare for you, but you can burn FLAC direct to cd with Winamp.
For using your ipod, you can convert to MP3 using this http://www.dvdvideosoft.c...verter.htm or this http://download.cnet.com/...06134.html or any number of audio converters.

No, I'm not talking about software. Cowon is a brand of portable players that happen to support flac files, and what I've always had. Just saying.

Trader's Little Helper is my favorite. Audacity works too, but it's more involved.
I used Audacity too. I like it. You may need to DL some plug-ins to get it to let you convert but I like how you can edit the songs. So if you want to make a ring tone just select the part you want and there you go. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

if you set up the right plugins, nero will burn flac to cd without farting about. you can also burn ape, shn, ogg, mp3 etc if you set up right
and if you want to convert flac to mp3 or wav then traders little helper is all you need
mediamonky is also worth a mention as it can transfer files on the fly from flac to your ipod and convert to another format such as mp3. no need for itunes. if you jailbreak your ipod touch/iphone you can do the same

Well, at least .ogg, .ape and even .wma seem to have fallen off to the wayside. Too many formats probably stunted the growth of portable digital audio.
.OGG is still used plenty of times these days. In fact, it is one of the core technologies in HTML5's <audio> and <video> implemententations in Firefox because it is an open/free format. (See also http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ontroversy )
AFAIK it's also the format most audio clips on Wikipedia are in.
.OGG is vastly superior to .MP3, and it's sad that it had virtually no support amongst makers of music devices.
I could never understand the point of .APE: wasn't particularly better than .FLAC, but required clumsy software that only worked on Windows. Horrible crap.
I didn't know that .ogg was being championed by/for HTML5 developers, but the open source aspect makes sense. I've had more problems converting .ogg to other formats, though. Could be the conversion apps that I used. Still, I don't run into .ogg very often.
And, yeah .ape's proprietary peculiarities made it an also-ran. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot. |

I couldn't agree more. Honestly though, the entire band sounds amazing. The version of Irresistible Bitch here is perfect.
Yes, it really is. Even including the part when it sounds like he stumbles over the microphone stand, LOL.
I was there and remember this performance very clearly. He does not stumble over the mic stand, he does one of those James Brown push the mic forward and spin and bring it back up things. He pulled it off perfectly. Ironically and rather sadly, I saw James not long after this performace at First Ave, he tried to do this same move, and instead the mic hit a girl in the head. |

well, yeah. and that's the case with many tracks. but since we're talking about a live show, I really dont' see your point.
I wouldn't say it's the case with many tracks. Anyway, I shouldn't have put it that way. The version of "When Doves Cry" on "From The Soundboard - 1984 Birthday Show" is maybe closer to the studio version, but it's completely boring (to me) at the same time. The only positive thing I could say was that it's an "interesting" version from an historical point of view. So I guess my point was: "more faithful to the studio version" does not imply "more enjoyable/interesting".
I just don't get it when people say that WDC was "too long" or "boring"! I absolutely LOVE what he's done to this song during those days on the rehearsals and this show. Less so on the actual tour, though. It's a classic tune with a classic leadline and is QUITE funky. |

I can dig it...
Isn't it interesting that at the same time video is pushed to higher quality HD, audio is being squashed by low quality mp3 and the loudness wars. At the same time video players and tv's get better while audio players come with crappy earbuds...
crazy world indeed!
never thought about that

I understand what you're saying, but for those of us like me who listen to music at work or in the car via the iPod, mp3s are just a great convenience. I also like to listen to music while walking, and FLACs or even WAVs just take up way too much space. I convert to mp3s for the iPod, and listen to the higher-quality stuff at home. I think alot of others probably do the same. I'm willing to sacrifice the sound quality for convenience

He said it quite casually. I was actually wondering about the people who were actually there... were they upset or happy that he did most songs they didn't know?.. |

It's also strange being actually able to hear the lyrics properly too to these unreleased songs. |
