Lots of young fans on here...encouraging as P hasn't really been promoted in the mainstream for years

Lots of young fans on here...encouraging as P hasn't really been in public eye for years!

I guess you must all have good musical taste to have found Prince when hasn't really been promoted on the radio or in the public eye since the mid 90s!

I became a fan when I was 12, back in 93 so he was still quite known then and got intoduced to him through the Symbol album.

Its great to see new fans come on board.

I'm glad I'm not a newbie, it must be quite confusing trying to piece together P's career for the first time.

I've been a fan since I was 7, so I'm not a newbie. shrug

And you can still see Prince on the music channels and they still play Purple Rain (the movie) occasionally, so it's not all that hard to find out. biggrin

I'm 16, huge Prince fan since i was 13. Huge Madonna fan as well since I was 9.. Because of Madonna, I wanted to get to know more artists from the 70's, and 80's... well now my taste very wide, I love 70's, 80's and a bit of 90's and 60's as well. smile

Music from now does not interest me actually.. like some artists and some songs, but nothing compares to golden oldies. smile

My son is a young fan in the making at 6 years old. The other day we were walking round Ikea and he was humming away. My wife said, "what's that he's humming?" and I replied, "Err, Jack U Off". boxed

I guess some songs should be avoided when young ears are present.

lol

Define "public eye". Prince has been super visible since 2004...even compared to the 90's. Superbowl 2007...largest TV audience he's ever had. Anyone?

By public eye i really mean promoted. He isn't promoted really in the mainstream media so when people aren't in it, they assume you don't exist. I thought it was quite a cool achievement that Prince managed to do the 21 Nights in London with no TV or radio promotion, only through adverts in London papers.

19 definately does count as young....coming from a 29 yr old!

I guess people say young to mean people younger than themselves!!

It's nice to see the younger fans on here. Especially sinc a lot of the older fans seem to think it's impossible for Prince to reach new fans without radio airplay and top ten hits. People who like real music by true artists will always seek for that across generations and it's a great thing.

I met a girl at the December 18th 2010 show at MSG and it was her first Prince concert. She was 30 years old and to see her excitement was amazing. She thought she would never get to hear Prince play some of those songs live in her lifetime.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I'm 22 and I'm not young enough lol. While people was listening to little jon, I was bumping the beautiful ones in my dorm lol. People would play that ballin song, I would play Baby I'm a star or get off. Then my last year living on campus my friend bought me that Prince cd uhh MPLs sound.. which is when I would bump dreamer and wall of berlin. I'm still in college and I grew up on PRince music even though my mom was not a fan of his work when I was little lol.

Yeah if Prince played the 'promotion' game there's no doubt he'd be all over the place. I think he does pretty good though. It's funny because a significant amount of die hards dislike his newer material, but I play a lot of it around casual or non fans and its well received. I actually know a few younger metal heads who purchased Lotusflow3r because they dug it so much after listening. My bff says Prince owes me money:lol:

My best friend has a 6 year old son. Who is convinced that I come around to visit him (he doesn't belief that in the 15 years before he was born, his mom and I actually had time to catch up and talk to eachother. Life evolves just about him lol lol lol lol)

So, my visits always end up playing around with him. He is a MJ fan. So, we both will search youtube clips from MJ. He likes the ones with children in the videos [insert jokes here]

I try to convince him of P his music. He just doesn't buy it. Doesn't like p. He does aproof the video of P with the muppets, that's the only one he digs. So, we end up taking turns at showing eachother videos of MJ and P. And just have a blast. I also practice the moonwalk together. Until his mom comes around and tells him it's bedtime mad

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I mentioned this on another thread, but the number of shows and the $25 price for the 21 Night Stand in LA, was genius in reference to new and younger fans. I have friends, co-workers, neighbors etc. going to the shows and reporting what a fantastic night they've all had. People are shocked by his guitar skills, his energy, all sorts of things. Half of my office is leaving early to go to tonight's show, and I had nothing to do with. wink I work in Bevery Hills and kids from Beverly Hills High frequent the same lunch time restaurants. At Chipotle, yesterday, a table of boys and girls were talking about Prince and the LA shows and how many shows they've seen and how many more they plan on going to (you know teens, trying to one-up each other.) It was cool and very strange as there is absolutely no promotion for these shows. None.

Yes that's true, his new stuff is pretty good too, esp Lotusflow3r, its just fans here are comparing it to how he used to be and that's a tough act to follow, but compared to many other mainstream artists around now he's still streets ahead!

I agree. I'm old enough to remember Prince from the 80's, but I didn't really become a hardcore fan until D&P in '91...around the time a lot of die hards jumped ship. LOL. Thats the cool thing though, he always manages to get new fans mostly because his sound is so different from most stuff in the mainstream, but still luring. Nothing, but love for Yoda!

Good music makes me happy.

MrLee192

im 20

got into Prince bout 3 years ago when i saw Purple Rain the songs music video on a huge screen in a restaurant.

The beauty hearing that song for the first time, i had never really paid attention to Prince before. All i used to remember was back when we had a VHS collection, before DVDs came into play. My dad had Purple Rain on VHS, i used to look at the cover and wonder what it was about but never watched it. Anyway the song was amazing, i remember i had previously been trying to chat some girls up and they were talking...but the guitar solo came on and i went "woah shut up a second im listening to the guitar solo" hahahahaha.

I also loved the visual aspect of it, i liked how the Revolutions image was this strange combination of new romantic, punk and metal. Id never seen anything like it. From that moment as soon as i got home i found out Purple Rain CD in my dads collection, and also Diamonds and Pearls and started from there.

hmmm I don't think I understand your post. Why can't a 16-year old understand Prince?

I love to listen to Vivaldi, Chopin or Satie. However, I have no idea about the 'presence' when they were popular musicians.

Although I wasn't there, I do relate to their music. It evokes different emotions at different times when I listen to it. Eventhoug I don't know THAT MUCH about who Vivaldi, Chopin or Satie was.

Why would a current 16-year old person not understand Prince music, is it limited to a person of your age to 'understand' his music?

I really don't understand your post.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.
