I also became a Prince fan when I was 14. So, be carefull, because being a Prince fan seems to be sticky like glue. Well, at least that's my story.
How did you get into Prince music? And what attracts you about it?

Mine story is bit funny actually..
Well, I really grow up with MTV. (when they still played music and not crap real life shows ) I remember a lot of songs from that time.. Madonna was a lot on there, so I always loved Madonna. But I was too young to know which songs they were, what they called, or which artists, I knew MJ and Madonna, Spice Girls and that was it. When I got older(think around age of 8) I had a computer so I could download ''songs'' or search it on the Internet(before Youtube.. ) I remembered one song.. that I saw once on MTV when I was 7.. with a guy that comes out a bath-tube in the beginning.. I told my mom.. she didn't know what I was talking about.. I loved the song so much.. but I couldn't find the name of the song or which artist.. years flew by.. I became Madonna fan when I was 9.. I bought ''Like a Prayer'' the album, when I was 11. I heard ''Love Song'' for the first time. I loved it, and I finally knew who Prince was.. lol (still not knowing which name or artists belong to the clip with the guy and the bath-tube l ) I saw in that time also ''Black Sweat'' on the television. I really liked the song..
Finally... after 6 years.. I was watching MTV.. and there was it.. the song I searched all the time!! WHEN DOVES CRY. I loved the song so much, I never heard it actually after seeing it once.. But finally it was on mtv again, and I thought THAT IS PRINCE! need to have that song. So, downloaded the song. And downloaded some other Prince songs, started listening to it.. and yeah.. after that I became a HUGE fan. And then seeing him live(it was really a dream came true.. my parents didn't want to go to Belgium for it..)But after begging , they wanted to go. In Belgium, Werchter.. 10 july.. last year.. I knew it for sure.. that man will always be my hero. That was it. [Edited 5/7/11 9:54am]

Hahah...that's funny coming from a Little Richard fan No man...not meant to be creepy...just an observation - its surprising to me but its encouraging that a new generation is discovering Prince for themselves and not relying on the mainstream media to feed them their music tastes. Hahaha, no I will allways think of you when I see that video of him in the bath, knowing that you have wondered for 6 years who he was
Werchter concert was a great concert! I was there too, and the vibe was great. I'm happy you were able to convince your parents, because I think that was such a special concert....A good jam with the audiance

i think its great!!!
and many of them r super cool and they prob know more about prince than some of us 80's fans!!!!
this should b a young Prince fan appreciation thread It does feel really great wen I'm teaching someone older than me about Prince. 18 here and been hardcore fan since 15, but not newbie here. But it mainly deals with us reading up and listening in on Prince more recently than older fans Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

im 16 and have been a fan since i was 9. first started with purple rain, then under the cherry moon, then graffitibridge. i would stay up till after midnight when i was like 11 watching the purple rain concert every weekend absolutely amazed. over time i became i took it upon my self to get the music and to learn more about prince. i remember being so confused because i couldnt figure out which came first parade or graffiti bridge lmao but now ima hardcore fan, and although people will call him gay bc they think he sounds like a girl, or bc he is so flamboyant, i shake it off and tell him how much pussy he was getting and that shuts them up...i even got my gf into prince and she loves him, she is 17. ive gotten alot of my friends into prince, i loaned of my friends the truth album and she loved it! being a young prince fan is great, everyone is into mainstream, which ill listen to, but just having an artist that has 30+ years of music feels great!
also he was in the public eye for a while with the super bowl, but i feel that if he keep on touring he can build a somewhat solid young fan base. i have yet to see him live, which pisses me off because ive watched alot of his concerts on the internet but never have expiereinced prince live. im gonna just pursuade my mom to make a little trip to l.a for a couple days

It's great to hear your stories and stuff. I think its great that Prince's music appeals to such a wide range of ages and races, in that sense he is a very unifying presence. I think its because his music is like a melting pot of different musical styles.
As to his shows, that's right, the Superbowl definately would have attracted a lot of new fans but rather than him being actively promoted fans would have had to search for him themselves online and discover him that way.
I do like the way though that he always announces that he wants families at his shows and tries to keep the ticket prices reasonable, that is a good strategy as it means he is going to continue to appeal to a wide audience.
London 2007 was a bit achievement as Prince only advertised in the press, there were no radio and tv interviews but his shows were pretty much full for the 21 nights (or rather 2 months that he was in the UK). It shows he has a strong fanbase. I think it also helps that he has had hits through the years so going to a show is a bit like a nostalgia trip, you listen to the old songs mixed with the new.
I have to say I feel that its nice that Prince is like a constant presence in our lives, pretty much an album a year, always unpredictable and mysterioius but I guess that it what attracts us! I feel I've grown up alongside him and his music reminds me of different stages of my life. Totally unique at least!

well i saw him on the tonight show on tv and when leno said "prince" everyone went crazy. I thought "who is this guy" and went on youtube and found a few of his songs and have been a huge fan ever since. I was only 18 at the time
I do think he will continue to get new fans because many younger stars today see prince as an influence and those kids who are curious about older music might become his fans.

I'm turning 20 in July and I started listening to Prince in 2008 when I was 16 turning 17. I would love to see more of my peers and people of my generation to discover Prince's music.

I would also be a fan if he would be gay or bi-sexual. To me that doesn't define the way I love his music and persona.
I don't understand that you point out his image of all these beautiful women. Would it really matter to you if he is gay? Would you not be a fan anymore when he is gay?

I actually see a ton of Prince mentions on twitter lately. That's a good expossure fro Prince. The Forum shows are helping as well. So does good parenting.

My son is in the womb right now, and if he can hear any outside sounds, he has been listening to Prince. My wife says that sometimes he starts kicking when he hears it. Twelve? When I was twelve (and no, I am not twelve BTW!) I didn't know know more than a couple of songs from the radio. I don't even know 12 year olds on my block that even know/care who he is.

I would encourage every older person in here, to reach out to a specific younger person in here and mentor them. I really don't give a fuck how gay it sounds. I've already reached out to someone, and given him/her mixes, and other music that s/he had never heard. I've explained background, told stories. I've taught him/her about that time, that very special time when (directly or indirectly) his influence dominated radio.
It's been genuinely fun passing this history on to a younger person. S/he and I stay in touch, questions are asked, and answered. It's a blast.
If there are any other younger people in here that have questions feel free to drop me a line. I would love to talk about it more.

I'm 16 and I've been a fan for about 9 months. I don't know why, but one day i decided to just look up some Prince songs on the internet and started loving his music. Last October I got my first 2 Prince CD's (Very Best and Purple Rain). Since then I've managed to get 23 Prince CD's, the Purple Rain DVD, Rave un2 the year 2000, 3121 perfume (i wear it and i'm a guy haha), and a W2A shirt. He's really one of the only artist/bands I listen to anymore, I'm addicted to his music. "In the distance, 6 others will curse me. But thats alright, I will watch them fall."

From what I've seen, a lot of the young people here are not the average young people. They have more variety of tastes than most people their age. Andy is a four letter word.

Savvy That's a nice thought, gotta be careful though as some people will use this to be creepy so it has to be innocent at least, yep youngies if you want any info u can ask me, (although some of you sound very knowledgeable already). Ecstacy says has been teaching other older fans already LOL
TheOneYouWannaC Yes, his music is addictive and it almost satisfies all your musical needs as there's so much of it! I started being a fan at 12 and i never got bored or 'grew out of it' as you can with other bands.
Vainandy Agreed - the youngies on here seem to be intelligent and have good taste, as I say its not easy to know about Prince if you rely on mainstream spoonfed media. [Edited 5/9/11 1:41am]

I don't think the situation nowadays is that different than it was 10 or 20 years ago. Prince's popularity has always gone up and down throughout the years. I became a fan in 1989 when I was 11. Where I lived, nobody (or almost nobody) my age was into Prince. Nowadays, anybody can listen to his songs on YouTube, Pandora, Last.fm, or others. You can (illegally) download his entire official discography or all his studio outtakes in a matter of hours. It has never been easier to get his music (no thanks to him!).

This is true, i listen to loads of styles whereas many others my age are happy just to stick to what the radio says is cool.
Which sucks ultimately.
www.countercultureofficial.com thats my band and we try to mix up as many influences as the song requires (and that our self taught skills can compose). Prince is listed there, his influence is seen in a few of the tracks...especially the programmed drum machine claps
Hes a bigger influence on our newer but unreleased as of yet material.
