If you ask me Parade is Prince's third best album of all time:

1. Around the World In A Day
2. Dream Factory
3. Parade

1985-1986 are Prince's BEST years as far as writing goes.

Parade's tracks AND B-sides are by far his best.

oh, okay, I haven't read the book in ages, so I vaguely rememeber what it said. I've always thought the only reason why Wendy became the "star" was because of his relationship with Susanna therefore when that ended--nevermind.

She was made a star due to her positioning in the PR film and tour ..I believe that was before Prnce started dating her sister.

somehow the break-up of the Revolution always confuses me, since I don't see Wendy as being big-headed.
Boy, I can't wait til EverLastingNow reads this.

Well of course there is going to be bad blood etc but lets see..Wendy had no problem with her sister going out with Prince knowing his track record etc. And yes maybe things did not work out betwen them and he was somewhat cruel lets say..aren't you a professional? Everything is peaches n cream as long as you got you firm positioon in Princes thing, got your sister even fronting a group by Prince (the family) but heaven friggin forebid things go wrong relationship wise..cool. Begone..SOTT and Lovesexy are brewing on the backburner.

1st- He started dating Susanna somewhere in '83

And then Im sure most knew she would not be exclusive for the most part at that beginning

2nd- Wendy DID have a problem with her sister dating Prince

when..at thebeginning? Only thing I know of is that she had a problem having her be so involved together in what she did...never showed at the beginning when she was being made a star

3rd- I'm not putting it all on Prince, I just think there are other factors in the breakup of The Revolution besides Wendy's supposed "big head". Matt Finnk and Bobby Z. also had a problem with Wally & Greg, I suppose they had a big head too.

I know others had issues as Matt said so...but it was Wendy who made a pressing issue of it and in her manner. And Im not putting it all on Prince either..Im putting it heavily on Wendy.

Dude, what the hell are you smoking anyway? Wendy owe you money or something? You're really making Wendy sound like her character in Purple Rain, you DO know she was acting right? Most of the band felt that the "Revolution Pips" were unneccessary and they were. Bobby Z. in Uptown even said that the band didn't become a true band until Wendy joined, then they all gelled as a unit. I've read a lot of things about the break up but it still comes down to that Prince was moving on to new things, and if it was such a bad breakup why does he still want to play with them? People have turned this into some big fued where that's not the case.

Sorry, Prince, but PARADE is your hands-down all time best album.Period.

PARADE only proves that Prince needs guidance in bringing together the best, most creative & entertaining product possible!

Left to his own devices, Prince damages releases with songs that should have stayed in the vault e.g. "We March", "Right the Wrong", "Jughead","Freaks on this Side","2Morrow", etc.

Prince doesn't seem to see an album as a BIG CANVAS, "Rainbow Children" aside. It's like he thinks ALL his work is "equally brilliant" and cannot decipher between weak/strong tracks...which is why so much good stuff is in the vault ("In A Large Room With No Light"), and we have some crap in our collections ("Hot Wit U") that has only damaged his reputation, become a critic's "whipping boy", and sales are poor!

PARADE is like flipping thru Picasso's sketchbook: quick snippets of colorful flourishes, and interesting rollercoaster of arrangements. It's like ART.

RAVE IN2 THE JOY FANTASTIC, to randomly pick a purely-Prince production, sloggs along inconsistantly as "just an album".

THIS is WHAT MAKES PARADE stand out! People say songs are unfinished on PARADE, but there's a "Method to the Madness" going on that CANNOT be found on any other Prince disc. It works! It's art! Not "just" an album, but a breathing, creative piece of art!

***

Imagine "ROADHOUSE GARDEN" actually being released. We all know that project was just an alterior motive to collaborate with Wendy & Lisa again...BUT: if W & L were to produce it it would probably sound BETTER than if Prince goes it alone, because their sensibilities would make a better Revolution CD, than if it were left to Prince and his razor blade, editing & choosing tracks. Prince knows it, which is why we don't have "Roadhouse Garden" in our stack of Prince cd's. I'll bet "Roadhouse Garden" compiled and mastered to it's full potential, would be the BEST Prince disc since,well,...PARADE. So there!

AMEN!!! worship

Parade doesn't sound like a soundtrack to a film. It sounds like a film.

Its the most coherent album. Not the most enjoyable - that'd be a tie between Dirty Mind and Lovesexy.

Its weird that although none of Parade's tracks list in my favourites (with the exception of Life Can Be So Nice), I can't just dip into it. I need to listen to it all in one go. It would have made sense to release Paade on CD as just one track, like he did with Lovesexy. Its the overall effect. Its dense. It sounds like wood. I can't explain it.

It sounds to me that He felt that way because it is exactly the beginning of the breakup with the revolution.
He did SOTT after this for a reason.

I think PARADE is as close to the soundtrack's perfection as could be expected in its short running time.

I agree the fleeting experiments in style and composition could have been done better justice with a longer running time, and the songs absolutely did seem to be abridged hints at far more grand musical strivings. This could have been a classic epic composition with no tracks a la LOVESEXY. But while I adore the bulk of the Parade-era outtakes on their own merits (this is, in fact, my favorite period in Prince's career), I can't immediately think of any songs (except maybe the slightly later recorded "Crystal Ball") that would fit the whimsical, yet cosmopolitan and romantic, ethos of the film as well as the tracks selected. They were picked wonderfully... and any additions, I fear, would have hurt the progression of the album more than help. Anyways, I suspect that Warner Bros. lacked enough confidence in the double disk format to OK such a measure.

As for Prince's suggestion that "Kiss" was the only good thing on that album, I totally believe that's 1) a jab at the Revolution's contributions, and 2) a sort of passive-aggressive fake humility in search of pleas to differ. In short: The album kicked ass, Prince knows it, but it better serves his ego never to say so.

Personally, I think "Kiss" sounded out of place within the context of the Parade album.

Some of the songs on the album sound as if they could have been fleshed out more. They're teases. Good teases, but teases nevertheless.

Funny, I was just thinking this same thing today, it does seem 'out of place' for some strange reason, though a Good song, and I agree that the other songs, the music, touches on so many other things, so many levels, that it leaves one yearning for more...

I don't think Parade lacks anything(though I do wish "love or money" would've been included on there!!! Maybe even instead of "kiss", since it does seem to be out of place).
It happens to be one of my favoite albums of his.

When Prince said that "kiss" was the only thing on there that he was proud of, he was just taking a dig at The Revolution(it was his ego talking, so to speak), I happen to know he thinks very highly of this album smile

They didn't have a damn thing to do with the music now did they? You can LISTEN to the Parade tour and know that it was on of his best but you can't really hear the Pips dancing now can you? The tightest thing about the Parade tour was the musicians PERIOD.

Why yes I've seen them many times thank you. And who is she to say? One of the main people working with him in the studio at the time, that's who! And I don't remember Wendy getting any flack when she joined from anyone, as a matter of fact she has said she was welcomed with open arms. And she may have been a girlfriend of Lisa, but she could back her talent up and she did. What songs did Wally and Brooks write again? And there wasn't all the drama with the breakup like "well then go then!" kind of stuff. They wanted to save their relationship with Prince before it was too late and they were able to, they still talk to this day. And yeah Sign O the Times and Lovesexy do sound a little familiar nice attempt at sarcasm it failed terribly.

I dont have anything against W&L or I wouldnt have sen them live on their own..have you? If not then you need to hush anout that stuff and not assume. Re-fucking-gardless if the backup were Rev Pips who is she to say "its not right"? etc. She got flack when she joined too but oh well (and yes there's a diff betwen her and just backups..but the pips were Prince s friends mad ebodyguards made part fo t e show..just like Wendy was Lisa's girlfriend hanging around and sliding into the empty spot left by Dickerson). They stated they weren't happy so Prince said "go head and go then" in which it happened and Prince made two of his most heralded albums--SOTT and Lovesexy..eva heard of 'em? Like LDC said "go..I dont NEED any imput form you to make it"..how ya like dem apples?

You guys debating the Wendy thing...go to the thread I posted in Related Artists and discuss it there. Leave these people alone to discuss the album, please

BTW--- I agree...Parade was ahaed of its time! It is by far the best album to date!

Why yes I've seen them many times thank you.

when?where?

And who is she to say? One of the main people working with him in the studio at the time, that's who! And I don't remember Wendy getting any flack when she joined from anyone,

Gee and Prince even wrote about the flack from a general consensus on Old Friends 4 Sale.."the say you lost your fire, with another musician you hired" etc. Plus its said by some band memebers that she hung on and slid right oin trying to be slick--Mark Brown sauid it. Do I quote it or just believe me? So there WAS flack.

. And she may have been a girlfriend of Lisa, but she could back her talent up and she did. What songs did Wally and Brooks write again?

I never siad she couldn't play and then again live she wasn't all that either. Sure she got the job done but it wasnt all doohickey like the other line-ups. Thats in print too for backup.

And there wasn't all the drama with the breakup like "well then go then!" kind of stuff. They wanted to save their relationship with Prince before it was too late and they were able to, they still talk to this day. And yeah Sign O the Times and Lovesexy do sound a little familiar nice attempt at sarcasm it failed terribly.

if wally and 'em was so unneccesary how come the parade tour is one of the best tours Prince ever put on?? I believe the ENTIRE BAND (including those three) were what made that show tight.

They didn't have a damn thing to do with the music now did they? You can LISTEN to the Parade tour and know that it was on of his best but you can't really hear the Pips dancing now can you? The tightest thing about the Parade tour was the musicians PERIOD.

They didn't have anything to do with the music, but they were a part of the overal show aesthetic. What is it you have against those three? Prince was paying tribute to JB's old soul revues of the 50s and 60s, isn't it obvious?

T Everlastingnow..That Parade show wouldnt have been as loose and funky and fun if he didnt have the inspiration and comaradarie of his boys up there with him. Point fucking blank. The previous Rev shows were just stiff and cold. Just because you cant get with it doesn't mean jack shit. I dont expect you to understand or admit that theres soemthing underneath that comes out to make shit groove. DONT FUCK MY ELECTRIC SLIDE JUST CAUSE YOUR BIASED SELF CANT GET WITH IT...look out..get out the way..move over.-Morris

I never said that she didn't deserve credit or anything or give Prince inspiration as well.I said she had a big head, a big nouth, and you said that the Rev Pips served no purpose and I said they did. Get Wendy and Lisa's hair outta your eyes and pay attention! You act like he couldn't play piano without them.
