But it is not be sold. What is so hard to understand. In addtion, a lot of Prince covers are done by wack ass artist and are awful. I would be happy if no one covered his songs .
"Not to be sold"? How much money do you think Prince made with just that one-off live performance of that cover? How high were the ratings and how much advertsing profits did the producer of the show make? I bet you they made a hell lot more than if he would have covered the song on record.
The live performance is meant to be a one time event and even if captured on some form of media it's not meant for distribution. Prince has yanked his live covers off of the internet stopping the distribution of those covers. The only reason they still circulate is because the fans can't stop bootleging every burp that Prince makes. The legitimate recorded covers he's done are but a drop in bucket of the amount of people who have covered him. He hasn't even recorded enough covers to make an official album. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming! |

The spin here is amusing. Prince has both performed other artists' material live without permission and recorded other artists' material and subsequently released it for broadcast toward financial gain without permission.
Are we forgetting that in 2007 he covered "All Along the Watchtower/Best of You" (by Hendrix and Foo Fighters, respectively) without the permission of Foo Fighters, so says the band themselves? While that recorded mash-up was never released for purchase, it was given to the producers of Howard Stern's Sirius radio show for airplay preceding Prince's Superbowl XLI halftime show, where he again covered the songs without Foo Fighters' permission, this time live. Artists don't just send recordings to national radio shows so the DJs have pleasant background noise while at work. They do it for project promotion, which translates into $$$ for them.
Moreover, the very next year Prince tried to invoke copyright law on other artists' material! Remember when NPG Records ordered removed from YouTube all fan-recorded footage of Prince's Coachella cover of Radiohead's "Creep?" The performance was blocked from view by even Thom Yorke himself... until Yorke ordered the YouTube videos unblocked as he held the recorded performance rights to that song, not Prince/NPG.
I love Prince, but he's simply a hypocrite in some areas, this being one of them. No degree of fandom need bar critique... or obscure the recall of just a few years prior. That's downright pathological.

Yeah and when people ask him, they get told no. Ask Elvis Costello. |

What about these people...
Chaka Khan - "Sign O The Times"
Alicia Keys - "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore"
Earth, Wind & Fire - "Superhero"
Eve - "Irresisitible Chick"
...and he hasn't sent out a firing squad to hunt down Meshell Ndegeocello yet and she's doing whole shows of his music. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming! |

I heard exactly what he said and understand perfectly what he meant but he is still a hypocrite, mainly for the reasons Lamma listed. Some of you will be "on his side" no matter what evidence is presented to the contrary.
AND BTW, if Prince spoke like a regular human being in his interviews instead of Princespeak, there would be nothing to be blown out of proportion or misquoted. He doesn't allow taping of his interviews, remember? |
