Prince has BEEN crazy. Where YOU been all these years? That's why we love him.
Plus he says things just so he knows he can get people riled up. Works every time.

^ Ya, and he has been a lot crazier than the Prince of late too. By a very large margin.

Prince doing interviews are always a bit embarrassing, it's rare he is saying something of interest - to me at least.
so true, BlackBob it's funny about covers:
Prince is against covers and then the (very bad) cover of D-Train's "You're The One For Me"....
it gives no meaning at all...
still.... it's kind of funny.....

Performing a song & recording a song are two diffrent things. I thought the cover was better than the orginal. In case you haven't notice Prince says and does things that get people like you to talk and wonder why... Works alllll the time "Would you hold it agaisnt me, if I said I loved another?" ♥

But Prince has done both of these. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

yall so lame do u even listen and comprehend he has nothing against people doing covers with permission and payiing for it he has a problem with people being able 2 do it without consent. its stuff like where prince stopped doing innerviews he said his words were always blown out of porpotion and misquoted. like he said u cant just go make another copy of a movie without consent so the same should appy with music. michael jackson use 2 speak on the same issue

& I won't disagree with ya bob. My man sez somethin' that have you but, part of my thinking on that is that he does that to get a 'rise' out of us. George Lopez was sweatin' my man and givin' mad compliments and now that I think about it, it has me like him even more. I thought GL was a trip before I saw that show now, he's won me over even more. Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Technically, performing a song on a TV show is recorded. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Technically, he isn't making a dime off the live "recordings" if he covers them on Lopez or any other show. TBS might, but not the artist. He could play 3 different songs of his own, but it wouldn't change how much he got paid from the show. I've said this before, but I'm certain Prince gets the composer's or estate's ok to cover a song in the studio. As he did with 'Purple House'(Red House) on the Hendrix tribute cd.
As with any artist or group, if they are covering a song live, they don't need an ok from either the artist or publisher of the song. Yes, you might make some money off of it live in concert, but no more than you would without covering the song. Once you release a cover song in the studio, you are intending to make money off that original composition or single. If I remember correctly he also stated in that interview that (basically) the internet has been great for record companies but bad for artists. Hhhhmmmm........NO!!!! The internet is one of the reasons record companies are going the way of the dinosaur and touring artists are doing just as well (in some cases better) than before. Now, if you were an artist that relied soley on record sales you probably are shaking in your boots.....but people (PRINCE) tend to forget that the VAST majority of artists AREN'T superstars and don't get what Prince was getting as far as royalty points. In other words THEY WEREN'T REALLY MAKING ANY FUCKING MONEY!!!!
As a matter of fact the internet has helped a whole freakin' generation of artists that the majors would have NEVER given a chance become successful. Are they multi-millionaires? No. Are they making a good living doing what they love? Absolutely. [Edited 4/28/11 18:08pm]

Seems to me that some of the so-called "haters" are the ones who love Prince's music the most. I wonder how many of his defenders have a fantasy that he might reward their internet devotion by giving them some of that good loving he's always singing about. The spin here is amusing. Prince has both performed other artists' material live without permission and recorded other artists' material and subsequently released it for broadcast toward financial gain without permission.
Are we forgetting that in 2007 he covered "All Along the Watchtower/Best of You" (by Hendrix and Foo Fighters, respectively) without the permission of Foo Fighters, so says the band themselves? While that recorded mash-up was never released for purchase, it was given to the producers of Howard Stern's Sirius radio show for airplay preceding Prince's Superbowl XLI halftime show, where he again covered the songs without Foo Fighters' permission, this time live. Artists don't just send recordings to national radio shows so the DJs have pleasant background noise while at work. They do it for project promotion, which translates into $$$ for them.
Moreover, the very next year Prince tried to invoke copyright law on other artists' material! Remember when NPG Records ordered removed from YouTube all fan-recorded footage of Prince's Coachella cover of Radiohead's "Creep?" The performance was blocked from view by even Thom Yorke himself... until Yorke ordered the YouTube videos unblocked as he held the recorded performance rights to that song, not Prince/NPG.
I love Prince, but he's simply a hypocrite in some areas, this being one of them. No degree of fandom need bar critique... or obscure the recall of just a few years prior. That's downright pathological. [Edited 4/30/11 12:17pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

The main reason most of Princes live covers are being debated in regards to this issue is because the fans(not Prince) having been circulating them for decades. Prince didn't press the bootlegs with all of the covers on them and sell them. We did.
As for recorded covers you'd have to ask the owners of the songs if Prince asked them personally for permission. Some seem to be a given. 'Everyday Is A Winding Road' by Sheryl Crow was probably granted because she worked on the same CD on another track with him.
He still sees fit to allow his music to be covered by those he respects such as Alicia Keys, Chaka Khan, TLC to name a few. Maybe he doesn't want everyone in the industry to record 'Kiss' because they'll jack it up!
Weird Al obviously feels the same as Prince since he could do all the parodies he wants legally but still asks for permission first and respects the artists decision.
It's called respect. Something that's been lacking around here for a long time.
When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

No fantasy here. I just don't like it when people attack him personally. It's wreaks of insecurity and pettiness. Talk about the music, the movies, whatever, but don't put him down for trying. I'm not delusional...not every song is great, not every movie or video is great. But he works his ass off trying to make great music with a positive message. And his so-called fans can be pretty cruel to say the least. "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

But it is not be sold. What is so hard to understand. In addtion, a lot of Prince covers are done by wack ass artist and are awful. I would be happy if no one covered his songs .
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
when Prince does covers...he doesn't look at it as him doing covers. He looks at it as " I'm Prince and I can do whatever song I want....U should be honored"...... He's not against "covers" at all [Crimson & Clover]. He's against artist doing HIS songs and record lables encouraging it.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
"Not to be sold"? How much money do you think Prince made with just that one-off live performance of that cover? How high were the ratings and how much advertsing profits did the producer of the show make? I bet you they made a hell lot more than if he would have covered the song on record.
