Rank his 90s output best album to worst

Someone is doing his golden age, lets rank his 90s albums. (Please no arguments about wether NPS is a Prince album) I have included NPG albums for arguments sake.

I am only doing Hits as per 3 new songs and live version of Nothing compares 2 u not all the classics and Bsides on it. Beautiful experience is an albumette or maxi single rather than album so not included. Black Album is really 87 music so dosen't count either.

Albums to Rank

Graffiti Bridge

Diamonds and Pearls

Lovesymbol

The Hits (Pope, Peach, Pink Cashmere, Nothing Compares 2 U only)

Come

The Gold Experience

Exodus

Chaos and Disorder

Emancipation

Crystal Ball (Its mostly 90s material)

The Truth

Kamasutra

New Power Soul

Rave

My list best to worst

1. Come cool

2. TGE biggrin

3. Lovesymbol biggrin

4. Crystal Ball biggrin

5. Emancipation smile

6. Diamonds and pearls smile

7. The Hits smile

I'll say it before anyone else does: You included Exodus and NPS, but not Goldnigga? razz (Also The Undertaker and The Vault too).

And since you're being so strict on the Hits (which I wouldn't include), Pink Cashmere is from 1988.

Best to Worst:

The Undertaker

Exodus

Come

prince

Graffiti Bridge

TGE

Diamonds & Pearls

Chaos & Disorder

The Vault

Newpower Soul

Crystal Ball

Goldnigga

Emancipation

The Truth

Kamasutra

Rave doody

I'll go ahead and add ratings x/10 too. Since I'm not stuck in the 80s like all of you, I actually like his 90s music a lot. I'm also not including Crystal Ball as it features a lot of 80s material and it's a compilation.

  1. Diamonds & Pearls - 8/10 (Half great; half weak)
  2. The Gold Experience - 8/10
  3. Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic - 8/10 boxed
  4. Chaos and Disorder - 7/10
  5. Come - 7/10
  6. Emancipation - 7/10
  7. Newpower Soul - 7/10 (Weak lyrics, but it's just supposed to be party music, like "The Black Album")
  8. prince - 5/10
  9. The Truth - 4/10
  10. Exodus - 4/10
  11. Graffiti Bridge - 2/10
  12. Kamasutra - 2/10 (Don't hate instrumental music, but this is dull)

I guess that JoeTyler thinks that The Truth is good, but he doesn't listen often that album . And Emancipation is good and he listens Emancipation. Am i right?

The Vault, my mistake there, I would place it around Emancipation, as "its about that walk" and "Five women" are pretty good and the rest is decent.

Have not included Undertaker, as I had a video cassette of it, and it had 6 songs which to me is an albumette (An album should have at least 8 full songs) and it wasn't really fully released, its crap. Gold nigga was not properly released either, just very limitedly, I haven't heard it, but read reviews and hear its a pretty crappy gangsta rap thing led by the hideous rapper Tony M

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

1) Emancipation (One of my very favourite albums. Possibly the Prince album I have listened to the most. What's not to love? He gives us just about every style of music he is capable of and the vast majority of it is great. I don't even mind Scrap D!)

2) The Gold Experience (Very, very solid album. It's a shame it wasn't released in 1994 and heavily promoted, it could have been a big hit.)

3) prince (Great rebound after a couple of so-so albums. I don't like every song but I love that he is trying lots of different things.)

4) Chaos and Disorder (Ah, my first Prince album. Side one is probably his best collection of rock songs.)

5) Exodus (It took a while for this one to grow on me but I quite like it. The segues are a bit unnecessary but they don't derail the album too much.)

6) Come (I'm not quite as high on this album as a lot of folks but I love the title track. Some good stuff and some unique sounds for Prince. Like The Gold Experience it's too bad that this was never released in it's original form and heavily promoted. It might have been nice to have both albums packaged together.)

7) The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale (A minor gem in his catalog. Considering that the songs all date from different years it holds together as an album pretty well. I enjoyed this "vault" release much more than the new music Prince was releasing circa 1998-2000.)

8) The Truth (Hmm, kind of average stuff here. Nice to hear Prince playing lots of acoustic guitars and it's not bad but it doesn't really grab me.)

9) Grafitti Bridge (I kind of go back and forth with this one. Some of the songs I really like and some of them are just there. It's not terrible but it sounds a little tame. If the movie was going to succeed it needed a much stronger set of songs.)

10) Goldnigga (Not as good as Exodus but there's some interesting stuff here. I like the instrumentation more than the actual songs but Tony M. is less annoying here than he is on "real" Prince albums.)

11) Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic (Some great tracks but mostly a jumble of average material. As a highly promoted "comeback" album this was very disappointing. Kind of scary that Prince was so out of touch with what the public wanted from him.)

12) Newpower Soul (He's capable of so much more than this. For me Kamasutra, Crystal Ball and The Truth were not "real" albums so I had high expectations for this one, especially since he was actually promoting it.)

13) Diamonds and Pearls (For me this may be his most disappointing album, he was still at or near his peak but this is just bad. Much too commercial and virtually devoid of the adventureous Prince that I love.)

The Hits (Not an album so I ain't ranking it as one, I do quite enjoy the "new" songs.)

The Undertaker (Basically a live album which makes it hard to rank against the others. I feel like this one is a bit overrated. It's nice to hear Prince playing rock music but I don't really dig most of the guitar tones and the bass sounds a little funny.)

Kamasutra (Hard to rank an instrumental album against vocal albums. I do like this one more than most folks do but I wonder if there are more "remixed" tracks like the one that was released as part of an ahdio show. It sounds much better with some lively bass and drums.)

Crystal Ball (I can't rate this vs. his other '90s albums. I was extremely disappointed in it at the time, in hindsight I'm glad that these songs snuck out when they did. I still feel a bit jipped that we got two discs of music spread over three discs. As released the three discs easily would have fit on two discs and we could have had another 75 minute/15 track disc!)

It's his sellout/mainstream album (at least until 3121) but hey, the singles are HUGE and the album-tracks are solid. Jughead and Push are the exception (just plain dull) but hey, they're still better than Push It Up or Freaks on This Side, for example.

Also, I enjoy this album because the direct sequel was a return to the "freaky/no rules" Prince (LoveSymbol) so D&P proudly stands as a temporal & HUGELY successful experiment (commercial pop/R&B comeback after the GB "disappointment"...)

I've always thought "Gett Off" was pretty terrible. The rest are ok but for me where the album lets me down is in the album tracks. Virtually every other Prince album features at least a couple of really great album tracks. I find that lacking on Diamonds and Pearls.

I actually kind of like "Push" (the strings are nice). As a fellow Kiss fan I think you will understand this. There's a Paul Stanley quote about the '80s albums. Maybe it's specifically about the new tracks on Smashes, Thrashes and Hits ("You Make Me Rock Hard" and "Let's Put the X in Sex"). Anyway, it's something like he's not ashamed of them because those were the best songs that he was capable of writing at that time. For me Diamonds and Pearls is well below the best of what he was capable of at that time. That may be why I am slightly more forgiving of albums like Newpower Soul and Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. Those albums are probably not as good as Diamonds and Pearls but that may have been the best he was capable of at that time.

Obviously you are bang on, it was a huge success so it certainly achieved it's goal but I think it could have done that while still giving us better album tracks. I'll have to give it another spin later today.

of course he could have given much better album tracks. He still had "Open Book", "Get Blue" and "I wonder", all terrefic outtakes that he (for some reason i'll never understand) did not use. Those should have ended up on diamonds and pearls.
