5. The Chocolate Invasion

6. Rave IN2 The Joy Fantastic

7. Planet Earth

8. One Nite Alone

One Nite alone Live has a few good performances but its not the live album i was hoping for. Indigo nights is worse. Slaugherhouse is very weak to me. But i do like the ten albums i listed above or atleast somewhat like them. I either dont have the rest or havent given them concentrated listens.

1) Lotusflow3r (Love this one. Great set of songs and it holds together as an album beautifully. I wouldn't rank this as high as his best '80s work but it's certainly in my top five post '80s albums. I still listen to this quite a bit.)

2) 20Ten (This is a great album. For me this is what MPLSoUND should have been. The ballads are much better than on that album. Of course Prince decided to give it a limited release and officially it's never been released in most of the world.)

3) Planet Earth (I really like this one. I know it gets a lot of hate but I think it's pretty consistent. Definitely not a major statement and a lowkey album but there's nothing here that I don't like. Maybe there are not any great highs but there are no disappointing lows either.)

4) Musicology (Slightly overrated by some but it was great to hear this after his "wilderness" years [2000-2003]. Mostly good to great with one cringeworthy track. "If I Was the Man In Your Life" is one of my favourite Prince songs of the decade.)

5) 3121 (Eh, this one's ok but I think it really tails off after the first four songs. It starts great but is unable to keep that momentum going. "Incense and Candles" and "Love" are kind of annoying.)

6) One Nite Alone (This is kind of his piano version of The Truth. Like that album I like the concept more than the reality. It's not bad and I enjoy hearing him play piano but the album does not grab me. I feel like the songs could have been better.)

7) The Rainbow Children (Put me in the camp that does not "get" this album. I really like the last four songs ["She Loves Me 4 Me," "Family Name," "The Everlasting Now" and "Last December"] but the rest is mostly disappointing. I really do not like the lite jazz sound of much of this and I find the keyboards especially bad.)

8) MPLSoUND (Very mediocre album. Other than "No More Candy 4 U" I don't really love any of the tracks. "Dance 4 Me" is pretty good. Thte album suffers from too many drippy ballads in the middle.)

9) and 10) The Chocolate Invasion/Slaughterhouse (I have a pretty low opinion of most of the NPGMC era tracks so these two albums rate very low for me. Too much of this sounds like Prince by numbers, very average and uninspired sounding material. I was thrilled when I first heard Musicology because based on this stuff I feared Prince had lost it.)

Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic (I don't consider this a "real" album so I'm not ranking it. It's a bit better than the original album.)

One Nite Alone Live (A live album that I can't rate against the studio albums. Finally, a live album from Prince! I'm not really a big fan of the jazzy side of Prince so I would have enjoyed a different era but for the most part this is decent stuff. Great to have a live release that is not just the hits. Now, if only he would release more live stuff...)

Xpectation (I can't rate the instrumental albums against the vocal ones. This may be heresy but this is my favourite of Prince's instrumental albums. Yes, I like this more than the Madhouse albums. The songs sound fully developed and I quite enjoy the playing. My only gripe is that Xenophobia was not included. I would like to hear the studio version.)

N.E.W.S. (Another instrumental album. For me this is the least of his instrumental work. To my ears it just sounds like a lot of aimless noodling. There's not much structure to the songs and as a result it sounds incomplete.)

C-Note (More live stuff. Great to have "Empty Room" finally released but the instrumental stuff is kind of boring.)

Indigo Nights (Not bad, I don't understand why people dog this one so much. Of course there was so much more material that could have been released so in that sense this is a little underwhelming, maybe a box set of highlights would have been more satisfying?)

The1592

  1. The Rainbow Children (9) [Would be a 10 if not for the annoying distorted voice. Questionable lyrics too, but musically great]
  2. 3121 (9) [An excellent pop album. "Get On The Boat" is in my top 10 Prince songs. "Lolita" and "Black Sweat" keep this from being a 10, though.]
  3. Lotusflow3r (9) [Would be a 10 if there were more vocal songs in place of the dull instrumentals (especially "77 Beverly Park")]
  4. The Chocolate Invasion (7) [Love "Supercute", "Underneath The Cream" and "The Dance". The rest is boring.]
  5. One Nite Alone... Live/Aftershow (6)
  6. N.E.W.S. (6) [Really good instrumental album]
  7. 20Ten (5) [Everything is good; nothing is great. "Laydown" is Prince's worst song, though. Should've stayed hidden.]
  8. One Nite Alone... (5) [Love "Pearls B4 The Swine" and "Here On Earth"]
  9. Planet Earth (5)
  10. Musicology (5) ["Musicology", "A Million Days" and "Call My Name" are great. The rest is pretty dull]
  11. Xpectation (4) [Decent instrumental album]
  12. The Slaughterhouse (3) ["Hypnoparadise" saves this from being completely terrible]
  13. Indigo Nights (2) [meh]
  14. C-NOTE (2) [Garbage instrumental album]
  15. Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic (1) [This rating is based on the remixes/new tracks only.]

the chocolate invasion is a mixed bag but i am surprised songs like "when eye lay my hands on u" and "underneath the cream" arent mentioned more often. To me they are some of the best songs he's had in the past decade

some of the lowest ranking albums still have some of my favorit songs,

but as albums i find them either horribly flawed or i'm simply unable to

ever sit through them anymore and instead just lifted the good songs 2

another playlist where i enjoy them a lot more, on their own.

plus, his two live albums aren't horrible or anything but compared to an

actual show, they completely misrepresent prince and the quality of the

mixing is just sad. total wasted chance on both official live albums.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
