that's what i'm thinking. especially after his interview on the lopez show. the studio rehab story, well we've been hearing about that since 1996. basically everytime he hooks up with a new girl he tells that story.
but what he said right after that struck me as meaning he won't be releasing any new tunes in the near future.
he didn't even manage to get 20Ten out in america yet.
i'm guessing we might get a song or two this year, being premiered at online radiostations, just like "cause and effect", "hot summer" and "rich friends". and maybe a live track through the doc, but i don't see a new album materialising just yet.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Electricity3121 again, guys just have a look at his past posts and forget about this thread please. I don't know why people keep on posting bullshit and ever waste time on that.

I think Prince's mass distribution options are dwindling.
I absolutely love the newspaper deals he cut in Europe for 20Ten and Planet Earth (was it PE?). It gets the material out to people who otherwise thought he'd died or retired.
The problem with what Prince did was not the distribution so much as the content. Planet Earth and/or 20Ten are just not albums you introduce to somebody hoping to grow our market. You have to be a Prince fan to enjoy them at all really, and even most Prince fans don't care much for the material on them.
Had Prince done the same with lotusflow3r (just that CD), he may have won over more people. Sure lotusflow3r isn't perfect--but it's for the most part, pretty good.
But a one day sale of your material to be lost and forgotten or never to appear on the shelves of music stores or iTunes really just stifles any chance of growing your 'brand'. The distribution deals were a way to say, "Hello, I'm here!", but you needed a sustainable method of getting his material across---and even if he had released lotusflow3r through newspaper, that shitty website of his wasn't going to grow the brand much.
My take with what Prince said on Lopez is this: Prince will say one thing. But do another. Only time will tell. We've had to wait 2 years between Prince releases before, and he always gives us an abundance of material when we do that. Sure, the material isn't top notch anymore. But I'll take so-so Prince recordings as long as there's something new to hear on each.
He said that he slowed down because of his relationship with Mayte--but in fact he was grinding away on Emancipation--I believe he released 3 albums that year. He reiterated his 'slowing down' post Emancipation, and that didn't really happen.
He seemed in his interview, still largely frustrated with the music industry. Like, he's waiting for the big record companies to fall like dominos, then stake out his new place post-armegeddon.
I just don't see Prince doing it for long though. I could be very wrong, but he's so impulsive about stuff--if he writes something and really wants people to hear it, it'll be released. To me writing rehab probably means 3 or 4 songs a month get made, which ends up being a full album in about 1 season. We'll see though.
I think Prince could easily sell a million copies of every album if he partnered with prince.org rather than constant harrass ben.

The newspaper deals get the music out, but beyond a Sunday morning freebie, they make no impact whatsoever - the material isn't out there on radio/tv/youtube, and the general public basically is of the opinion that "if it was worth releasing, it would be on a record label" - because last week they had Tina Turner live hits CD free with their Sunday rag, and next week it's Duran Duran Rio.
They work great as a promotional tool for a tour, well the only promotion for a tour, but the whole way of doing things basically devalues the album/project/music itself.

So, do you think he's running out of options or just sort of shooting the breeze?

Shooting the breeze. I think he knows to get a hit record, he has to put a lot of work in. It's a risky market, AND the record has to be great.
I think he knows the music isn't up to scratch, and he doesn't want to take the risk of investing that amount of time/effort/money - being locked into promoting a record for months and months (singles, videos, TV, radio). We already know once it's recorded he's done with a project, and thinks it's the record companies responsibility to promote it - an attitude he's had since the WB days and has shown to still have since, with Arista, Universal etc.
Easier to toss out a CD and use it as promo for easy cash concerts. Generial audience are always up for a live show of the songs they know, more than YET ANOTHER come back CD that falls short.
I think if he plays the game, he isn't out of options to work with record companies, but I don't think he wants to play by their rules (and really, they are crappy rules, so I see why he wouldn't).

It just seems like (At least to me), offering his music on a website, even if it isn't his own, would earn him a ton of money. And he wouldn't need to use mp3's either.
THere are plenty of Prince fans willing to fork out money and wait 2 weeks for a CD to arrive.
Obviously his shows are making a lot of money--he's been using the same stage set for years now, other than a crafty symbol as a stage, it probably doesn't coast a hell of a lot to set up, so he's obviously making bank.
It just seems like to me he could be making a lot more, and growing his fanbase at the same time.
Las Vegas, 02, LA--all cash cows, I"m sure.
But I can't help but get the feeling he's not generating the money he could.
But then again, the fact that he's not as aggressive as you'd think he could be, makes me also think he's probably making bank and doesn't need to worry about it.
Either way, I'd like to see him release something a bit more interesting next time. You're a real fucker. You act like you own this place--ParanoidAndroid <-- about as witty as this princess gets! I hope everyone pays more attention to Sags posts--sweething Jesus weeps

No source, no thread. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |
