Am I The Only Person Who Thinks The Purple Rain Era Trench Coat Did Not Age Well? I know it was kind of in style back then, but know when I see people dressing as him during Halloween, it looks so corny. I know the trench coat look is legendary, as actually love the way he wore it doing the Dirty Mind & Controversy Era, but the Purple Rain( purple trench coat only) coat was kinda corny. Just my opinion.

I liked it and thought it looked cool.
Besides, pretty much everything considered "cool" at one point in time looks corny 20+ years later.

How about posting a pic so we can have another look at it?

Now them silk pajamas (from the scene where him and Jerome argue) are still the bomb!
Also the leather jacket from Kiss is still stylish.
As for the purple trenchcoat, it's all in how you rock it. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

It's not meant to age well, it's become synonymous with the 80's. What would the music scene have looked like without Prince & the Revolution's theatrical getups?

There are a lot of clothes that Prince wears/wore that look corny on others. Prince often rocks a trench still and it looks good. "New Power slide...."

I thought the jacket was cool. I had never even seen a purple trench before I saw that movie. I thought they were all grey like Inspector Gadget wore.
Prince made everything so cool. And he's part of the reason I'm like obsessed with the 80s. LOL. I love a Man who:
Wears More Make Up Than Me. Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots. Changes His Name To An Unpronouncable Symbol. Who Changes His Name Back From An Unpronouncable Symbol. Oh And Most Importantly, Who Is Sexy Little Drop Of Butterscotch

The Purple Rain look hasn't aged well.
The shirts......uuurrrhh....the shirts..... .

The look is as cool as it was then. But I wouldn't repeat the look. Been there done that. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

your talking shit!... | |

its probably just the people wearing it, not the clothes. dressing like prince wont make you look like prince

I LOVE the ruffled shirts.
But that isn't even really a 1980's thing. It's a 1700's or 1800's thing is it? lol

I think the trench looks great on screen.... but in person, it probably doesn't hold up.
I remember buying those cheap gold pyramid studs and sticking 'em through my own cheap jackets, back in junior high school.

It would have been cooler if it was an assless trenchcoat.

If you think it aged well, you're stuck in the 80's.

I think it looked awesome back then and still looks great, in fact Prince called a fan on stage to dance at the Columbia,SC concert a few weeks ago, dude was rocking the Purple Rain coat, with the ruffled shirt, Prince had him get up on the piano and dance.

oopsie! I thought the title of this thread said Purple Rain Coat. and I was thinking "yeah, rubbers really don't age well, I you didn't find out the hard way"

The fact that you remember it proves that it has aged very well, indeed. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It doesn't matter where you saw it. You knew Prince wore it.
It's iconic. Which means it's ageless. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It's iconic. Which means it's ageless. That still doesn't mean it did not age well. Of course it's iconic. For example. Those platform shoes people wore in the 60's & 70's are iconic, those shoes did not age well.

Oh, dear...do I really have to explain this? The definition of "iconic" is "of, or pertaining to, an icon." In other words, for something to be iconic, it has to be associated with an icon. Prince is an icon.
Platform shoes (or any other article of clothing) are not iconic, in and of themselves. To be iconic, they would have to be identified with an icon. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Platform shoes are iconic, they were worn by pretty much every glam rock star ever. But they haven't aged well.
