Prince has quite a few songs that I never thought were exceptional or truly displayed his genius at first. Somehow, after repeated listening, it dawns on me and I am amazed how he gets greatness out of a seemingly ordinary piece of music. He has even had some hits like this - Get Off didnt strike me as anything worthy of the awe that every other Prince single deserved. I couldnt understand why it was a single or a hit. Years after its release, it dawned on me.

I recall the first time I played the 3121 CD and thinking that the song, 3121, sounded like something he had already done in the late 80s, didnt have much to it but a big bass drum beat, and wasnt especially awesome. Today, I was listening to the live version from the BET Award show performance and it hit me how funky and effortless this simple little song was. It was like a sleeping monster of a groove and only Prince could pull that off and make it interstig for 3 minutes. Amazing - still - after being a hard core devvoted fanatic since 1978 I still hear things that dumbfound me without even trying.

Hell, the entire Planet Earth album is a sleeper. I remember not longing for Musicology or 3121 when it came out. It grew on me to the point I was singing Mr Goodnight like it was When Doves Cry or something.

Dinner with Delores is probably my favorite sleeper because it was on an album that was wrongly dismissed but is his most perfect pop song in my opinion. GOod put on teh phones and listen to the layers, the pristine production, the dumb ass lyrics that turn out to be genius that fit into teh groove like nothing else.

I love it when you wake up sleepers. I generally had a song on every album that I considered weaker than the others, and as a result, skipped it a fair bit.

when i first heard it i was like "wtf is ths"..of course i was like 12.6 years later (in the mid 90s)when i started to go to clubs where trance and house was played..i recognized a familiar sound..drum and base..gave me a hole new view of of this song..hell this album.i went back and relistened to it.and now its one of my favorite songs.

I have been listening to Prince's cover of A Case of U for the last week. It relaxes me and puts me to sleep and that way when I wake up, I can hear it. Very soothing and lovely vocals. Electric Intercouse used to relax me alot, so did Somebody's Somebody.

um, these are not sleepers....these are hits (without the airplay).
