Come to think of it - I do remember Bono saying something publicly positive about the Housequake, so maybe he was doing it. I'll correct my earlier statement - 1 person.

When was this?

Don't remember any housequake moves. The dance crazes that was around was body popping, doing the robot, moon walking, the running man which i was excellent at if i tried to do that now i probably break my leg lol.

Prince had no influence on mainstream dances moves. The youths on the streets did.

The only place I've seen it done was in the 'Sign O' The Times' film. I assume that was it, anyway.

It wasn't the Twist - It didn't exist outside of Prince world.

Lol, this is so true. The only copying I remember doing in the 80s as a teenager was trying to do the Girls and Boys dance a lot, walking around dressing like him from Mountains, with the wide brim hat(that kept on blowning off my head) and outfit, looking like a complete twat.

lol I think that was the only drawback of being a Prince fan. You try to look like him, and end up looking like a complete twat. In the great words of MJ "You are not alone, I am here with you."

Wait a minute now...I'm not into all that!

I was there.

No there wasn't.

Maybe slight hand gestures ala SOTT film - but as a full on dance - um no.

Were any of Prince's dances even meant to be taken seriously? I thought that they were all very tongue-in-cheek. I don't remember ever seeing anyone doing a Prince song at a school dance. I don't even remember any of them being played on radio.

Oh yeah he does intend them to be taken seriously. Especially after The Bird blew up.

No Housequake was not a popular dance. It was played in clubs, people did like it. Was it like the Sh*t? No there were other songs. It wasn't THE song at the time. But people liked it. Actually I think Hot Thing was played a lot more in dance clubs than housequake.

Not if you want to ask about The Walk, The Bird thats entirely different.

Never mind the fools who don't understand your question. I respect you for asking.

Well, being English and being old enough to remember, I can say quite categorically that the Housequake was not a popular dance in the UK. I don't even remember hearing the song outside of playing it on the album.

In short:

hell no

RIP sad

Here in France the housequake or the "tremblement de maison" as we call it, is a very popular dance, along with the cancan and dancing rock 'n' roll to techno music.

I'm looking out my window now and there is a small group people in berets putting their foot down on the two, jumping up on the one and generally having fun.

It' s a lovely scene

It's essentially just jumping.

"Put your foot down on the 2

jump up on the 1"

They're beats.

Part of what makes this song so interesting is that it's somewhat of a parody of James Brown. It's a song made for a dance that doesn't exist, and no one's doing it. There's something insular about that which makes it sort of spooky, sort of sad.

Shut up already. Damn.

I was 5. Weren't you cognizant growing up, too? Don't you remember dances and such from your childhood? Don't you have any older siblings? Haven't you ever read up about the 80s?

I remember dances, but not when I was five. You must one he'll of a memory. And what if the dance wasn't popular in the states, but was popular in the UK etc...And I read a lot about the 80's.

Throughout the late 80's, every wedding do I went to, there would be my Aunty Margaret on the dancefloor, having drunk too many G&T's. She'd do that odd leg rub dance that accompanies Wig Wam Bam, did all the actions to Agadoo & then when Housequake was inevitably played*, she'd adopt Cat's trademark stance and perform the titquake movement for the happy couple. Happy days.

*this never happened.
