Yea, thats funky!

You know your playng funky when something just happens. You don't exactly know what. But your sound comes from a place that makes sense. Not contrived or forced. Easy to be exact, yet funk. Thats when your head bobs, the Aunt Esther Face kicks in. Time to cook some monster cookies!

Whats interesting is what people are considering FUNK these days. Chelsea Rogers was and still is horrible. Horrible because we heard this before in the 70's and expect so much more from Prince. Yet a bunch of people thought it was funky. Daring Funk was Sex MF, Gett Off. He woudl reach way in there and pull out something nasty! Nasty isn't what he says, it's the way the music sounds. The bending of a guitar, a funky keyboard off key, a thumping baseline that pulls the tiles off the floor. A sratchy off key throught, a drummer who needs a hand replacement. Funk is what makes your head bop and your eye twitchy. It makes you make a face like Aunt Esther.

Do you people even know what funky is? Maybe thats why people are not posting to this thread. They don't know what funk is. Yet everyone talks about it.

Funksters can you join in?

[Edited 4/7/11 5:44am]

Not sure if it makes my face go Aunt Esther, but here a little from the funkypedia

Prince rarely does "funk" and he's certainly not funky like the stuff that Sly, George, Bootsy, James and Larry did in their hey-days. But he's got his thing and on the funk tip he is surprising. As far as moving to complete funk, I guess the time around the Come album/Exodus album he was closest to being funk and not also new wave/pop/rock/whatever.

If I have to choose one album, I'll go for Exodus. If I have to choose one song, I'll go for Make Believe (funk version). That song is like finding out that that cute girl can shake it and is a hidden freak and you're getting it. Yum. (and for part of a song, I'd go for the extended part of Kiss)

And now I'm reminded I need to finally make that Prince Funk compilation a friend of mine has been bugging me about. I've promised myself I'd keep it to under 35 songs. Wish me luck smile

Sure! I can tell you that I'm now down to 95 tracks (I include tracks by side acts, so Nasty Girl, the Stick, G Spot and some more tracks are in, and I've got some stuff to cool down, as it were, so I've also got Adore, Crazy You, Do U Lie? in there. Of course, they may not make the cut in the end, for now Cloreen Baconskin is still in too biggrin )

Well.. that turned out to be harder than I thought. So in the end I settled on lucky number 7. 7 compilations that is. All well under 35 songs wink All with a loose theme to them. There's 2 comps where I'm not happy with the flow yet, I may change them still. All regular album versions of the tracks, also by associated artist, unless mentioned. (unless unreleased, in which case the regular unreleased version)

Some of the jarring breaks are intentional (like adding Bob George), some of the weird choices just worked better in the flow (like reversing the order of High Fashion and Mutiny. It's amazing how well High Fashion flows into Jungle Love)

Prince has a lot of types of funk and I think this is a relatively good overview. I'm sure I missed tracks that are unforgiveable (I wanted Musicology and PoomPoom in there somewhere, for instance, and I had to cut the Stick), but feel free to comment.

In "Sexual Suicide," during the beginning of the second verse, where he sings, "Baby...if u only knew." The interplay that happens between the bass, drums, and horns is absolutely sickening. In more recent years, I'd say the guitar line that runs through the "think ya better dig me now" part of "Sticky Like Glue," is pretty lose-your-stomach funky.
