Diamonds&Pearls easily sparkles over Rave though that ain't saying Much IMHO.but the difference is that Prince had a song or two to fall back on.Rave seemed tossed together&the type of Album Prince did while waiting in Line for His Tofu Dogs with Extra Mustard.

I got into Prince before Diamonds and Pearls came out. Diamonds and Pearls just doesn't stand the test of time as an album for me. I like it, but it is more out of nostalgia than anything. The only songs that still interest me are "Cream," "Thunder," "Live 4 Love," "Gett Off" and "Willing and Able."

Rave on the other hand has a lot of songs that appeal to me. The only one that I believe is weak is "Silly Game."

Rave by a landslide.

Just out of curiosity, cuz we've never talked about it that much, what is it about Rave that you like so much? Other than the title track, what do you feel are classic songs on there?

As for me, I pick Diamonds and Pearls. I don't care what anyone says, I still think it was a smart move. The look was great, the live band sound was great, the videos were great, the singles were great. I can only find one dud on the whole albuma and I don't mind the rapping at all. People praise Symbol, but that has just as much rapping. I don't and never will understand the backlash against this album.

I don't have a vendetta against Diamonds and Pearls. I just feel like I've grown past it.

As for classic songs on "Rave," here you go...

"The Greatest Romance Ever Sold"- this song is a grower. I wasn't too entranced by it on first listen, but it has grown on me considerably. It is sexy and beautiful and deserves the praise it gets.

"Hot Wit U"- I've always loved this one. It's got a great beat and Eve adds a lot. I think this would have been a hit.

"Tangerine"- short and bittersweet MASTERPIECE. It reflects mood better than Prince had been showcasing in awhile.

"So Far, So Pleased"- a pop/rock masterpiece in the same ilk as ICNTTPOYM. Gwen makes the song even sexier and the guitar just ROARS. This would have been enormously popular if released.

"The Sun, the Moon and Stars"- a heartfelt, sexy and quirky gem that never fails to make me smile.

"I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore"- this song competes with "And God Created Woman" for my favorite Prince ballad of the 90s. Enough said.

"Strange But True"- fun and quirky in an older school way. It's very dance-worthy and kinetic.

"Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do"- it may be derivative of "Forever in My Life," but it gets its message across in a nice way.

"Prettyman"- I wasn't crazy about this song at first, but the funk of it has just gotten to me.

All of the other songs except "Silly Game" are at least decent in my book.

That is my point. Track for Track Rave is actually a pretty good album. Sure its lacks any sort of cohesiveness unlike Diamonds And Pearls and the likes of Emancipation. But the songs burn brighter. If prince had given the songs out on Rave as singular MP3s to club members i think a lot of people would be commenting on how great a lot of the stuff is. People would be posting their ideal tracklist orders etc. Rave is just badly assembled..

That stuff is pure junk and should've stayed in The Vault. Diamonds and Pearls is pure candyfloss. Only Gett Off and Money Don't Matter 2night are songs that really coun't as genuine classics. Willing and able, Strollin and the title track are pleasant pop tunes. That is it though. There are more keepers on Rave..

Wow. See to me, Rave only has a handful of great songs. It's not that I don't like the album, cuz I do. I just think it's average and kindof a flat listen. It seems like he wasn't really into it or something. If you combine the best of the regular and the remix album, it's quite a bit better. As is though, there are only a couple tracks that I would rate as an 8 or better- Rave, Tangerine, SM&S, ILUBIDTUA and maybe Wherever U Go. I grew past that album in about a month, but I still love Diamonds and Pearls! I guess I fall in with the herd with Rave (but don't hate it) and you fall in with the herd with D's & P's.

Now, if Rave could be combined as one album like so, I would like it a lot better.

1. Rave - remix (put the regular on Crystal Ball)
2. Undisputed - Moneyapolis (the regular sucks in comparison)
3. TGRES (In2 version w/ Eve)
4. Hot Wit U
5. Tangerine - extended
6. So Far, So Pleased
7. The Sun, Moon and Stars
8. Man 'O' War - remix
9. Baby Knows - extended
10. I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore
11. Strange But True
12. Beautiful Strange
13. Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do
14. Prettyman - extended

The music and lyrics of So Far, So Pleased seem much less classic than I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man.

However, I do think that Strange But True is great.

I suppose if I had to choose, it would be Diamonds And Pearls, but I don't really care for either album. In fact, I am somewhat saddened by the reality that in both cases, the follow-up projects were considerably better [o(+> and The Rainbow Children], and in both cases, the follow-ups neither garnered as much attention or sold as well as their predecessors.

That's like comparing urine to crap, but if we must. Seriously though of all the albums I have these two see no parts of my CD player. Usually it takes a while for albums to grow on me. It took months for me to appreciate what a gem Rainbow Children was. As for D&P and Rave... I'm still waiting. There are some good songs on each: Daddy Pop, Insatiable,I Love You But..., So Far So Pleased, and Beautiful Strange (SE version I know). However, other than I Love You But I Don't Trust You Anymore I could do without all of these songs. Hell, I do.

They're both not on my top 10 list, but I think I'd pick

Diamonds & Pearls

Simply because it has "Thunder", "Diamonds & Pearls",
"Cream", "Strollin", "Willing and Able", "Gett Off",
"Walk Don't Walk", "$ Don't Matter 2Nite", "Insatiable" and
"Live 4 Love".

Ok, there are some commercial disasters on that album and
it might not be his best, but it still has more good song
than, say, the o(+> album.

And well, Rave has some nice tunes too, but I can't come
up to more than 5 or so.

Definately "D&P". I love the 1st half of the record, there are some great tracks there, but I must admit there are some quite annoying songs on this album as well, need I say "Jughead"?

i havent got D&P but after reading these posts i think i will leave it until later to buy!

i like rave though and have never understood its hugely bad press.
i think it sounds like r&b at times, with undisputed and hot wit u, and even though i generally dont like that style for some reason its ok when prince does it, i think it just has a better melody.

i also think i love you but i dont trust you anymore is one of his best songs, is that about his split with mayte?
also, wherever u go whatever u do, i thought was an old song that prince had re-done, i assumed he wrote it for someone else (turns out richard marx) and then decided to record it himself on his new album. but i downloaded the richard marx song right here waiting and the lyrics are mostly different. has anyone else noticed the similarity between those two songs?
