Rolling Stone Prince portrait - eew!.. I haven't been in the Prince forum for a while, so I don't know if this has already been spotted and posted by a fellow Orger:
I was at CVS earlier today and found a special print edition of Rolling Stone magazine celebrating 'the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time,' and of course Prince is amongst them, at the 28th spot. I didn't have time to read the whole article [and still haven't online!], but I thought I would just share the portrait that went with the article [the editors decided this time to go for paintings instead of photos for the whole issue).
Not sure what you all think, and sure, there is no accounting for taste, but in short: I don't dig this painting by a certain Sterling Hundley AT ALL! Unrecognizable, in my opinion. The pose, the attitude, the hairstyle... this reminds me more of Beethoven than Prince!

I'm more disgusted by the one of Jimi Hendrix. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I sort of like it. It doesn't look terribly like Prince, but it certainly has an interesting mood about it. I was expecting a cartoony caricature, but I find this pretty respectfully done.

The write up is great. My issue is where they put him on the 100. He shd be alot higher. The Leaf Shall Inherit The Earth.

I agree... Sometimes I read some of these list and just lose my mind... If he is number 7 on the greatest artist of all times list, why is he number 28 on the rolling stones list... Much higher indeed. This better antonb and PurpleSpirit319

Who's all-time list is he #7 on?
As for this list, he beat out some pretty impressive people!

Why are most of the black musicians more caricatures and the white ones are 'portraits'? Weird. And the Jimi one is vile and morbid.

These lists suck (Eminem long above Miles Davis?). But it´s cool to read some of the texts.

The title should read "In no particular order... Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artist of All Time" This better antonb and PurpleSpirit319

who cares... its just a picture
the write up by ?love is really good though... very respectful. His story regarding Prince being forbidden in his Christian household is very similar to mine
1999, What Time Is It, and Vanity 6.... I remember thinking WTF... this dude is ridiculous
Dance... Let me see you dance

I mean, I guess I get what they were going for, but the execution was really bizarre. It simply looks like an autopsied corpse with a guitar stuffed inside of it. Wow. I can't even imagine the editor seeing it and being like, "Yeah that's definitely Jimi."

Rolling Stone has always been garbage. They can't understand the simple fact that Bob Dylan and John Lennon have sucked the big one since the end of the 60's.

That painting is inexcusable. The artist did not even try to capture Prince's features or his usual demeanor.

Lol, it even doesn't look like Prince.

Alguy said: Rolling Stone has always been garbage. They can't understand the simple fact that Bob Dylan and John Lennon have sucked the big one since the end of the 60's. Not true. Although I do tire of their constant promotion of Dylan, Elvis, the Beatles and the Stones as the greatest thing since fucking.

Well judging buy the comments, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one scratching my head about this Prince representation. I guess Rolling Stone did achieve to do something different this time than relying on the usual photographs for illustration, so I guess that's good. And like I said, there's no accounting for taste, so I understand if some see something special/interesting something in it.
And I guess that falls in line with probably the main point of these lists - attract readers' attention with something special and sales/profits. Otherwise, me too, I can't get my head around these lists, and what their criteria are. Rolling Stone alone has this one 100 Greatest Artists (which has plenty of musicians/singers), a 100 Best Musicians, then also a 100 Best Guitarists, among others, and most of them are annual things. [I'm not sure of the exact titles, but that's what I recall from my online search].
Interestingly, I recall seeing Prince at the 27th spot in the print edition, while in the online one they put him 28th. Again, no idea how these things are calculated.
And to respond to Alexandernvrmind: sure it's just a picture - but pics are potent, and are worth you know how many words:)

Interesting and good point, I missed it. Can't check it all now, but if that's indeed the case, I'm not too surprised...

I hate them for that too. They r so stereotypical in their music choices. Although classic rock is awesome, soul and funk need attention too! I mean BEST ALBUM: BEATLES (purple rain isnt even in the top 50!) BEST SONG: BOB DYLAN BEST ARTIST: BEATLES
Although i like how they like Jimi Hendrix but that pic is shameful The folks from Brooklyn play da bass pretty good but the ones from Minneappolis play it like they OUGHTA SHOULD!

Why shocked? Michael Jackson was a song and dance man, not a musician. Aside from advancing the art of music video by throwing tons of money and having some Ed Wood-level ideas, he was no different than Sammy Davis, Jr.
Come on, peeps. [Edited 4/4/11 13:04pm]

The list says 100 greatest artist...not 100 greatest musician. I've always thought Michael was a great artist. I can give you many reasons for that but long story short, the list itself is stupid

i was shocked because they overrated his death. i was a mj fan before he died and i noticed he got more awards, numbers and publicity after death than alive. They had mj in the league of the beatles and elvis for the past two years, thats why i was shocked. But other than that Michael can seriously sing and even though he was an entertainer and stole a tad of Prince swagger he should have been bumped up just a little IMHO [Edited 4/4/11 13:21pm]
