First time I heard this song, I thought it was very cool.

Next ten times I thought it was tolerable/decent.

Not it's totally unlistenable (like the album it resides on).

savvy

There was a douchebag in here a couple of years ago that more or less stated that Prince had never composed genuine Funk music.

I wasn't livid because of his idiocy, I was livid, because some people were stupid enough to take him seriously.

He went on to proclaim; a- He knew how to define Funk b- There was an existence of a "Funk Community" (Do they have meetings? Collect dues? Do they have a mission statement?Do they have a yearbook?) that didn't take Prince seriously.

The thread went on forever. Sometimes delusional people are actually smart. Not in this case, he was both dumb and lost.

Planet Earth is better than Musicology or 3121 - the only reason people like either is because of the promotional push they received in the USA (aka happy thoughts/nostalgia).

The Gold Experience has aged badly.

20Ten is NPS pt.2.

ATWIAD is an overrated and somewhat boring album.

The SOTT/Lovesexy band was better than the Revolution.

'Love Symbol' is Prince's best album of the 90s.

Maceo is not very good.

Prince's love for Chaka khan is irritating cos all she has ever done is scream.

Lovesexy is a snoozefest.

La la la he he he, is awful.

Some of princes new songs are a lot better than the 1999 album.

Prince is not as good a dancer as he thinks he is.

No matter how many times he's sings about women, Prince has had at least one homosexual experience before.

What's so great about Adore? Crucial, a song which is in the same vein thematically, is a much better song.

He should've been nicer to Kevin Smith.

Some people believe P has never done drugs. I beg to differ.

People who sing and write about sex so much probably aren't getting any.

He's definately had a tiny trim off the ol' schnoz.

Martika's version of Love...Thy Will Be Done is better.

Prince can do any genre brilliantly, including rap.

We Gets Up is an awesome song, and Jughead isn't that bad either.

Also, I like Tony M, and I think his rap in My Name Is Prince makes a great track even better.

Hmm That's an interesting one. Do you think that your opinion on this has changed over time because that's pretty much all the casual fan links him with over the years? (Meaning so you've tired of it).

I'll admit Let's Go Crazy has never really been a big song with me, (a little too anthemic) but I still think the rest of the album is extremely strong.

That of course is a possibility Fenwick. 20 odd years of listening can do that to a person...hehe.

I don't think I have ever liked the movie, but I do not dislike the album, I just think he did far better in the 80's.

When I was younger, around the time of PR etc, I was very impressed, that I cannot deny, but as soon as ATWIAD and Parade appeared, that was it for me.

I am a big fan of PR era live recordings, but apart from Computer Blue, Darling Niki, and Beautiful Ones, I just never connected with the PR album.

Am I making sense? Probably not.

neutral

My opinion of Purple Rain hasn't changed since I first heard it. I find it to be the weakest of his albums in the classic stretch from Dirty Mind to Lovesexy. I only listen to it when I'm listening to them all in order.

Anyone who claims to not like all of Prince's hits (PR, LRC, RB, LGC, etc.) is the equivalent to the type of person who likes to go around telling everyone that he doesn't own a television. You're a snob. Yes, there may be better tracks on other albums, but a lot of his "hits" are hits for a reason, they're masterpieces. I can understand not liking one or two, because personally I think Kiss is boring unless performed live, but to not like ALL of them is nothing more than flat out snobbery. Also, without those hits, and without Purple Rain, we wouldn't be here talking about this now.

The Time. The first 3 CDs I can pick and choose a few tracks off of and enjoy, but Pandemonium is a flat out amazing album delivered straight from the Gods. The Intro that goes into Pandemonium, followed by Sexy Socialites and then Jerk Out is one of the best CD introductions ever. Donald Trump (Black Version) is the best slow jam they've ever performed, and I wish they didn't ignore it live. Chocolate...Skillet...oh man, I'm going to listen to it right now. YOUNT!

What's wrong with being a snob? You say that like it's a bad thing. If we all followed popular taste, we would have stopped listening to Prince a long time ago and we'd all be Justin Bieber fans now.

Everything is relative too. I will readily admit that Purple Rain is a great, brilliant album (in fact I'm listening to it now just to refresh my recollection). All I'm saying is that, personally, I prefer Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, the Black Album, and Lovesexy. If that makes me a snob, then I will accept the designation with pride.
