Controversial Opinions

Here are mine:

Dreamer is sooooo boring.

Lovesexy is an average album.

I enjoyed Planet Earth and The Rainbow Children.

Prince hasn't released any interesting music since 2004 (included).

(But that's not a controversial opinion, that's a fact!)

If interesting means "something new and exciting", then I have to agree nod

The Purple Rain album is very average, and the movie even more so.

And I would be ecstatic if his next five albums were instrumental (that's not a controversial opinion, that is a wish).

Planet Earth is bleeding brilliant (apart from Mr Goodnight which is like a vomit burp)

The title track is a master piece

LotusFlo$$$ is awful

Musicology is his worst album

NPSoul is funky as dog shit

The current band are play by numbers (is that controversial?)

Prince went out to the Oscars without his wig and no-one really mentioned it lol

You mean the mastering of the album and the sound of it or the actual contents?

The 12" extended versions of "America" and "I wish u heaven" are not very good. Especially the goofy stuff in "I wish u heaven".

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

The content is wonderful when performed live, but I hate that demo-ish sound on the album. I don't think the remasters would make it better.

"Adore" is a very mediocre, even kind of boring, song.

Why do people automatically think "negative" when they think controversial?

Here are some that seems controversial on this forum:

  • Wedding Feast is kind of funny, shows Prince as a musician knowing his genres, also outside of RocknRoll

  • Had U is a great outro, short, simple, good lyrics

  • The Gold Experience is pure filler tracks

100 million % agree. (I ain't touching the Lovesexy one - that's pure heresy)....

My contibutions:

BOTH One Kiss At A Time and Insatiable are stronger romantic ballads than Do Me Baby

I wouldn't go as far as irreverence, but I agree that The Gold Experience is a highly over-rated album

A considerable portion of the NPG Music Club tracks from 1999/2001 ish were much better than people acknowledge.

Hmm That's an interesting one. Do you think that your opinion on this has changed over time because that's pretty much all the casual fan links him with over the years? (Meaning so you've tired of it).

I'll admit Let's Go Crazy has never really been a big song with me, (a little too anthemic) but I still think the rest of the album is extremely strong.

That of course is a possibility Fenwick. 20 odd years of listening can do that to a person...hehe.

I don't think I have ever liked the movie, but I do not dislike the album, I just think he did far better in the 80's.

When I was younger, around the time of PR etc, I was very impressed, that I cannot deny, but as soon as ATWIAD and Parade appeared, that was it for me.

I am a big fan of PR era live recordings, but apart from Computer Blue, Darling Niki, and Beautiful Ones, I just never connected with the PR album.

Am I making sense? Probably not.

lol Oh don't get me wrong, I'm 94.325% with you on this one, (I think it's more a horrible choice of words than flat out anti-semitism) but I think we've both seen this conversation bring out the crazies.....

Makes perfect sense. I most definitely rate ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, Lovesexy and ummmmm... what's that other album.... ummmm... OH YEAH!!!! ONA Piano above Purple Rain. (Sorry I couldn't resist mocking myself).

And you happened to mention 3 of my 4 absolute favorite PR tracks (I still worship When Doves Cry too). We're obviously in the same zip code here, I guess I'd stop short of calling it an average album and maybe call it slightly over-rated? (Am I making sense)? lol

Black Sweat is a piece of shit. Boring Prince parody through the lense of mid-00's "urban" pop, people are fooling themselves into thinking it's anything but.

Sheila had a more profound and lasting impact on Prince's music than Wendy & Lisa did.
