Prince sounds like Joni Mitchell sometimes Especially the beginning of The Cross...

Are you going to leave it up to everyone else to tell you he does or does not, and why? Or can you give us your reason for thinking so?

I was just wondering if anyone else heard her influence in his voice...and in what songs...sorry, guess I should have been more explicit.
How can I explain Joni Mitchells voice in words, hmmmmm, it's hard. I hear her voice in my head but don't know how to describe it other than she is able to go from that high to low in one jump..... My step mom listened to a LOT of Joni Mitchell when I was growing up.

Ok, I was not giving you a hard time, sorry, I just wondered why you thought what you do.
I can't hear it myself, though I have heard little of Joni, only an album or two.

I read somewhere that Joni is one of Prince's songwriting influences. I found a great cover by Price of a Joni song called A Case of You, which was on a Joni Mitchell tribute album. I purchased this song from Itunes.

It's also on Prince's One Nite Alone Solo Piano & Voice album.

I'm a big fan of Joni's (way before I became a Prince fan).
I can't see any influence in singing. Especially in a turd like The Cross.
I can't understand that Prince dared destroying a gem like A Case Of You the way he did. Pathetic.

The performance of 'A Case Of U' from the 1983 First Avenue concert is definitely in my top10 most favorite Prince songs live. He did the song as if he seemed possesed at that moment, really sensitive but then the ONA piano version is not so good IMO. Have a look at 'The W2A: Euro Tour Song Survey' http://prince.org/msg/12/362417

The Cross is definitely not my fave, but he absolutely does sound like Joni Mitchell in the live version on Sign O' the Times...the way he drops his voice, that's all her.

Honey, your step mom isn't the only one who listened to a lot of Joni Mitchell. Your step mom is from Prince's generation (as well as my generation). Joni's "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" was all over the radio. You couldn't help but love Joni. She didn't just influence Prince but other singers and people like myself who loved her lyricism. Joni, as well as Prince, have a gift with word pictures. I do believe that Prince learned a lot about creating word pictures through listening to Joni and other gifted musicians like her. "A united state of mind will never be divided
The real definition of unity is 1 People can slam their door, disagree and fight it But how U gonna love the Father but not love the Son? United States of Division"

...i think he sounds a little like MJ the way he says "time" at the very end of Still Would Stand All Time.

The way he sings "Reflection" during the TV perfomance with Wendy really reminds me of Joni Mitchell...btw that's a little jewel among his best TV perfomances

I'm a Joni newbie, and the more I listen, the more I discover things that Prince drew inspiration from. So, I kinda have an idea about what you're saying.
Like "Dorothy Parker", his singing doesn't remind me of Joni, but the way he told a story is a reminiscent of Joni's lyrical style.
Interesting that you think he sounds like Joni, I've always thought his piano/guitar playing sounds more like Joni at time.

It's a chain reaction...everyone is influence by everyone in a round about way and, if it's some of your fav artists and you make music yourself, then your bound to throw flavours in. Sometimes however I'll here a song on the radio that I've never heard before and I'll realise it's a song Prince has been influenced by to the point of almost tracing over it....I can't think what the song was but Peach is a dead ringer of a song by a nandI know he said he used to listen to.
