2003? I think the original version of the song hails from the Emancipation era.

My guess is Manuela - given the timing and the very bitter "Divorce Remix" version that appears on 3121.

The Dance comes from sessions recorded in 1995-96.

I don't know if it was written during this period, but that is when it was recorded.

This is why I always think the song was written about Mayte, who was his dancer in his band during the years it was recorded and the years prior... didn't she join NPG in 1993 as a dancer?

Mayte first arrived in Minneapolis to work with Prince as early as December 1991.

She originally began work on the album, recording "However Much U Want," the track was left off the smbol album but turned up on her own debut in 1995.

And yes, she began dancing with prince on the tour for the symbol album.

And that's exactly why I think it's about Manuela. The line about not wanting to see "her" dance is (I think) a reference to the fact that Mayte was a dancer. He doesn't want anything about his new one to remind him of his old one.

^Good point, but if the song actually belongs to the 95/96 sessions as is more or less believed then there's no place for Manuella...

We have no way of knowing what parts changed in that time. As you recall, the 2003ish version is drastically different than the 2006 (or whatever) version. Sorry, this track isnt high up there for me so I often get the 2 2000s versions' years of release confused. I guess there was one from 2005 and one from uh... NPGMC.

Maybe that line comes from Prince wanting to see more from Mayte than being just a dancer, hence her own album? And later she directed a couple of Prince's videos did she not?

Or maybe he wanted her to be a mother, not a dancer?

I've always thought the song was him being kinda petulant with the "I don't wanna see you dance, I don't wanna make love, I don't wanna give you my heart" shit because he really DID want to do all that stuff. This is expanded upon in the end when he is saying things like he doesn't want to make love all the time, on the stairs, etc which we all know is complete bullshit.

Given that and given the claim that its from 1995-1996, I'd say it is a pretty good wedding-jitters kind of song. I am sure, at the time, he was well aware that Mayte wanted to marry him.
