3121 and 2010 Albums. Anyone actually prefer either of those to 1999? I'm interested.

Nope.
Although I enjoy the songs on those CDS. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

3121 is a great cd though, but doesn't come close to 1999

Oh, alright, I'll do it
1999 is one of my least favourite '80s Prince albums. The title track is still nails down a chalkboard since it was played to death during the millenium celebrations and that's probably why I didn't end up buying the album until fairly late last year, so technically I've owned it the shortest of the three.
I loved 3121 and 2010 when they came out (yes, really) but neither has a lot that's kept my interest beyond the initial excitement (that's not to say both don't have some good songs).
To me, despite probably having more respect for the work on 1999, given it's significance in musical history vs the other two, all three of them are roughly equal in my personal preference, and tend to all end up near the bottom of the pile.
I suspect if you asked me again in 5 or 10 years though, the answer would be different. My interest in 1999 is growing, while it's gradually waning for the other two.

Nothing on either album begins to touch 1999, which is a masterpiece from start to finish. This is coming from someone who enjoyed both of the latter albums. Black Sweat and Sticky Like Glue have the groovability of some of his earlier hits, but no. No contest. 1999 is raw musical genious.

No...
But, 20Ten and 3121 get played far more in my car.
I rarely play any WB era stuff these days, as I played it to death so much growing up.
I also think some people get caught up in the nostalgia, more that what they are hearing right now as it plays. 1999 broke new ground at the time, and I appreciate it for its creativity, but that was then, this is now.
Had a song like "Beginning Endlessly" been on 1999 it would be deemed a classic. It's a victim of its release time, rather than the quality. I would certainly rate it more than the likes of "All the Critics" and "Automatic".
Songs like "Love" and "Fury" are as well written as anything he has done, its just the way he crafted them sounds dated in the era he has released them.
Plus much his own fan base get old and more stuck in there ways. 1999 was often "their youth", and no matter how good a current Prince release, it can't match up to that level of rose tinted nostalgia. .

I'm down for saying some of Prince's newer stuff is top notch, but I just didn't agree with your choices

I actually love Love, but I still know it aint the best Prince can do....for me it's the best he can do right now. And if Beginning Endlessly would have been on 1999 there would not have been a Purple Rain...cause that shit wouldn't have sold shit!

A lot of truth here. This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

begining endlessly is not a classic and i dont believe it would be regarded as a classic even on 1999.
I agree that nostalgia plays a part but come on, everyone knows he was at his peak in the 80's. And that has nothing to do with nostalgia, he was young, more motivated. Ofcourse i enjoy some of his recent output and i am not complaining but his 80's stuff is considered classic for a reason- because it is.

For me 2010 has only 1 skipper, Sea Of Everything, all the others I love.
3121 I skip 2, Black Sweat and Incense and Candles.
1999 has many more skippers. I don't like All The Critics, Lady Cab Driver, Something In The Water or Automatic.
So on that basis, I'd have to say 1999 was the worst of the 3.
However... The good stuff on 1999 is better than the good stuff on the other 2.

As I stated, no, I don't think 20ten or 3121 are as good as 1999. I just play them more. I didn 1999 to death.
I think the 1981-88 material is as stong as it gets. But the genius us still there, it just shows up less frequently.
I do think Prince writes as well as he used to, he just doesn't execute it in a modern manner anymore. He needs a producer.
But in Song writing is there.......
The Last December Black Sweat Love Cinammon Girl Illusion Coma Planet Earth The Word Beginning Endlessly No More Candy 4Ever Colonized Mind Dance 4 Me
To name a few
All worth of placements on a 1980's album, had they been produced in that era. .

I agree with most of this. "New Power slide...."

Ummm....you are kidding, right? The ONLY song on that list that could even be CLOSE to how Prince wrote in the 80's is Black Sweat. And I honestly like Dance 4 Me....but even that isn't worthy of 80's Prince.
The songs in your list are full of trite, preachy, non-catchy and downright amateurish song writing. They have no.....style is the word I would use. Prince had a style that was all his own (even if it was a hodgepodge of those that came before him.) You knew a Prince song even if that song was sung by anyone else. The songs above??? Generic as shit! [Edited 3/30/11 7:06am]

Each to their own, but Black Sweat is probably the most basic, non chord driven song out of them. It the one song that becomes good simply because it was produced well. The song itself is basic. Much like DMSR or Delerious.
But I would certainly take "Love" over "All the Critics", "No More Candy" over "Jack U off" and "Black Sweat" over "Tamborine".
