I am a fan of Joni and I have to be honest that Prince did a great job by performing it emotionally but respectfully - I don't always like his funked up cover versions. He did it in style!

One of my top 3 favorite covers by Prince

My favorite rendition is from the Purple Rain era, it had that Purple electricity with tons of steam, it felt & sounded like Prince & the Revolution wrote that for that era

He's a hypocrite. He bitches about people changing lyrics to his songs when they do covers when he changes the lyrics to almost every cover he does. Why is it acceptable for him to do it and not for others? Also, judging from the silly nonsense he wrote in the Joni Mitchell/Starbucks CD with features his version fo the song, he has no idea what the song is about, either.

I love the piano and vocal performance, but the lyrical omissions and/or massacres are stupid. The lyrics express something of the composer. If you can't sing the song as written, don't sing it. Write your own damned song.

Pompous fucking idiot.

He did Half an amazing job by covering only half of this great song...taking the grand total on ONA to 1.5 decent tracks.....but who needs quality when he can crap out self indulgent pap and crazy propaganda like avalanche

The early live version and the studio version are both great. Love 'em both. I like the way he leaves out the first verse of the song - it's an interesting take on the song that way.

Prince's version of this song is soooo good I forget someone else did it first. His version blows Joni's away. I can't even listen to hers after hearing his. First time I heard it, I cried, it really moved me. Wow, just wow, his vocals are so good on here. I'd love to see this one live. One of the best displays of his vocals.

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

His version and Chaka's version of "Man From Mars" are the two primary reasons why I'm such a huge fan of Joni's music nowadays.

Being a Mitchell fan way before I knew Prince existed, I just CAN'T like how he chopped the song.

If I'm forced to, I could stand his guitar version from 83, but when it comes to the studio version he recorded for that horrible piano album I can only throw up.

Joni's original is a fucking work of art. And on the live version from 'Miles Of Aisles' she sings it even better than on 'Blue' (and that is saying a lot)!

Uh oh.....

Now Vitriol. We've had many a pleasant conversation. And I have just about as much disdain for big chunks of the 2000s as you. But that right there....(pointing up) Up there in bold.....

That will get you your teeth knocked in my brother... lol

Seriously, I just don't get why some folks don't connect with that absolute masterpiece of an album, the Joni song included.

Oh well. Maybe some day you'll wake up..... (Obviously j/k)....

I'm sorry. I think I'd better listen to Kamasutra than to ONA.

At least, there are 2 cuts I like on K and one of them is 11min long.

So I enjoy a much longer segment on Kamasutra than on ONA.

The only MUSIC I like on ONA is Avalanche. And the lyrics are absolutely cringeworthy.

And I cannot stand the fact that he had the guts to put 'Solo Piano And Voice By Prince' on the cover when it's NOT that. AT ALL.

Strange but true.

Both albums stay very well inside their jacket/hockey puck and there's no need to take them out, but if I did, I'd rather listen to the 2 tracks I like from Kamasutra than the ONA piano (AND MORE INSTRUMENTS) album.

After years in the shelf, I happened to play ONA some days ago. No way: I can't stand THAT.

As I've said MANY times before, if I want to listen to Prince the pianist I play me those amazing 82 & 83 rehearsals. If I want to spend one of the most boring half hours of my life I play ONA.

Did I say BORING? Forgive me, I should've said extra-ultra-hyper-boring.

I´m often under the impression that Prince has his very own and unique interpretation of other people´s work of art. lol Remember when Kevin Smith´s movie Dogma came out and, after hearing why Prince loved that movie so much, Kevin thought Prince was talking about a whole different movie.

As far as I´m concerned, I like Joni´s original a lot, but I also like Prince´s 1983 version. The newer version is not really my cup of tea.

What did he say in those liner notes that you mentioned?

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

wacky I really am sorry that you feel that way. Prince's version on ONA is good. I like it I really do but saying that you then can't listen to the original cause it pales is bonkers.
A Case Of You is one of the most heartfelt beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard and Blue is one of the best albums of all time. Go back. Re visit. And lay off the purple kool ade.
