A wee tiny mention lol. Funnily enough I was listening to Year Zero today...a bloody great album.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

THIS IS THE ACTUAL BIT WHERE PRINCE IS MENTIONED:
This word gets thrown around a lot at the Oscars, but who do you consider a genius? RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Trent respects alot of musicians that "do it on their own". He sampled Prince on the first Nine Inch Nails album.

I'm right with him on Prince, but I've always thought the Beatles are the most overrated musical act of all time, and I don't see that changing soon. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

Thats cool! I knew Trent was a fan and its nice to see this mention.
Beatles overrated? Not possible...greatest pop musicians of our times The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Trent pretty much is NIN. He does most of the music himself...very rarely having outsiders contribute unless they have been in the band quite a while. Im a big fan of NIN, i love their double album "The Fragile"
What an atmosphere | |

Makes sense with Reznor playing keyboards in bands in the early 80s that he listened to Prince frequently. It definitely played a part in giving him confidence to record an entire album on his own, but wisely decided to create a band name, esp. when the time came to play live.
I still hold hope that Prince and Reznor collaborate on something. Felt that was a missed opportunity on Prince's end to do some cool remixes or produce a song.

You're wrong, but's ok.
Also: Rolling Stone is bi-weekly, not monthly. [Edited 4/6/11 16:15pm]

not to hate, but in retrospect, i'd agree too.

Not overrated, just mis-appreciated. Too many people, critics included, can't separate being great from being greatly influential. The Beatles were often great, but they also recorded a lot of filler tracks and self-indulgent crap. But the filler and crap tend to be treated as gold because the Beatles had such a massive impact. It's easier to just deify them and their entire catalog than it is to get deep in there, explain why the great stuff is the great stuff, how it influenced so many musicians, and how some of those musicans have managed to exceed the Beatles in one way or another. But go back in time and read some of the harsh reviews of the white album and you’ll get that bigger picture.

Just because they're God to you, doesn't mean that's true for everyone else.
Musical taste/opinions are subjective. Not fact. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

Im a huge Prince fan - but the Beatles will never be reached by any act, lol not even by Prince --- their importence can't be appreciated enough,
The Beatles has created so many classics, both songs and albums..... to me the Beatles are the finest act ever. Prince 4Ever.

Greattttt.
Prince is the best - to ME. But, unlike annoying-ass deluded Beatles fans, I don't feel that my personal opinion that Prince is the best, gives me the right to shove that view down other people's throats and tell them they're wrong for not sharing it.

completely agree, and claiming that beatles will "never" be reached by any act is not something that can easily be backed up. Music is subjective after all and who knows what someone might come up with in the future.

I think he's quite on the money on both counts: The Beatles for self-expansion; Prince for resourcefulness.
But what I perhaps like most about this is Trent give props to two very visible acts. In indicting the commerical music machine, it seems we so easily slide into a certain snobbery, discounting the artistry of many acts in reverse proportion to their popularity. That's just unfair. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Subjective, yes of course: By.. "The Beatles will never be reached by any other act" I meant the amount of classics / evergreens or whatever these are called nowadays. Lennon/ McCartney's craft of writing classics. And recordsales. Noone will ever reach that.
to me: The Beatles is the definition of the finest in music, great music and great messages as well. Rubber Souls, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, White Album, Abbey Road, those are stunning.
I see some of you don't agree, fine with me lol........ Prince 4Ever.

fair enough, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. [Edited 4/7/11 3:20am]

Lennon and McCartney were the greatest songwriters of all time, but most albums had a few dodgy tracks in them. They were usually songs written by people other than Lennon and McCartney.

You're still wrong. | |

Many people don't "get" the Beatles and never will and that's perfectly ok because I know many, many people who will never get Prince either.
Most musicans have nothing but high respect for the Beatles and their contributions to popular music. I can't think of any musician that has complained that the Beatles are/were overrated. Most musicians understand and respect their talent and amazing songwriting skills.

The Beatles could be overrated and still be the best group in the history of popular music. Perhaps they aren't ten times better than any other group, just slightly better than all the competition. Who cares? I knew guys in my high school who argued that AC/DC, or the Rolling Stones, or some other group were better than the Beatles. I think that was just a masculinity issue; it's not manly to like "Here, There, and Everywhere" better than "Highway to Hell." Or it's a good way to start an argument, if you're in the mood for one.
As to the point about filler that some have made, I think most Beatle fans would agree and could point to lots of songs that could have been cut (as have the actual Beatles--read the last Lennon interviews, for example). They had to crank out two albums a year under incredible time pressure. Their studio performances were also sloppy, and there's a whole website devoted to cataloging every single recorded mistake: http://wgo.signal11.org.uk/wgo.htm. But if you're going to claim the Beatles were inferior in some respect compared to other musicians or composers, you'll have to look outside popular music, and that's comparing apples and oranges.
Now, as to comparing Prince and the Beatles, that's not a fair comparison, because there was only one Prince and I don't think any of his songwriting collaborators rose to the level of a Lennon or McCartney. I used to get into arguments with my mom about this. She couldn't believe I would mention Prince and the Beatles in the same breath. I've never been a fan of their music but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that they weren't still together when learned of them and then Lennon was killed shortly thereafter. I wouldn't even consider them from my time. I'm pretty sure a lot of others feel the same. I think a big part of their fanbase actually got to experience them on some level and not through someone elses recollection. In ten years we'll be having this discussion about MJ. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I remember when I first started getting interested in the Beatles. I was probably seven or eight years old. I asked my parents whether they could ever get together again, and they said no because John Lennon had died. I asked what instrument he played, and they said guitar. I said, why just couldn't they find another guitarist? Well...that took a lot of time to understand. Lennon's death continues to affect me emotionally even though I was only a little kid when it happened and it's been more than thirty years. He was taken away at the cusp of an amazing creative burst of energy for no reason at all.
I had another point to make about the "Beatles are overrated" argument. Does that mean overrated as musicians, or as songwriters? Prince could arguably play guitar better than any of them (although George was no lightweight). There were plenty of songwriters in the Tin Pan Alley days who wrote tunes that are just as catchy as some of their biggest hits, a point that I think Bob Dylan made. When people talk about the Beatles being the greatest group ever, I think they're talking about the whole package, which is greater than the sum of its parts. There were no better songs for a beat group to play in 1964 than the ones they played, and there was no better group to play those songs than the Beatles. If you don't like their songwriting, you probably won't like their work as musicians and vice versa. I agree, the songwriting when Paul and John were together was amazing.
I wish we could see what the world of music would be like, if the beatles didn't exist or if Prince didn't come along. Prince influenced so much of the music world , I wish more people could understand this. "What's the hurry 2 die without tryin?
If u could sell ur worries would anyone buy'em?"

I hate to say this, but one day Prince will die and I expect the world will suddenly discover what an amazing musician and songwriter he is/was and how great an influence he has had. Just look what happened when Michael Jackson died and imagine something ten times that. The same thing will happen to Paul McCartney too, I think. Right now everyone says John was the heart and soul of the Beatles but they will realize one day that Paul contributed as much if not more. To quote Lennon, you don't know what you got until you lose it. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.
