Prince's Confidentiality Agreements: Anyone ever broken them? Kevin Smith never signed his i know. But has anyone that worked closely with Prince ever blown the whistle on him and pissed their former employer off to the extent Kev must have done?
I could just imagine Prince throwing a tantrum over stuff like this.
How watertight are these things in American law anyway? What could Prince actually do if a bunch of old band members decided to reveal their experiences?

A few have.
and if some of the unauthorized biagraphies have a smidgeon of truth, quite a few have.
But I would imagine these siliencing techniques are sort of likened to levies holding back water---once there's a real breach, it's going to get messy.
I think folks have been silent not because Prince has a real legal right in all these cases, but simply because Prince has the financial ability to keep them tied up in courts, and they don't.
It's sort of like the org. We can't have Prince photoshop threads anymore like in the days when the mods used to openly sponser them. We can't post even some of the most basic photos of Prince in the gallery anymore---the gallery used to be a thriving and interesting section of the site. Prince has very little legal right to do this--but that's not the point. He can easily keep ben tied up in court exhausting funds while largely remaining unscathed himself.
Even the P-fans United episode was little more than a statement me thinks.
You're a real fucker. You act like you own this place--ParanoidAndroid <-- about as witty as this princess gets!
I hope everyone pays more attention to Sags posts--sweething

I think the PFU episode would have actually made a difference had it not been sold out for that "opportunity to work with Prince" carrot that got dangled and chomped at. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart. |

Generally speaking why would any "professional person" want to divulge confidentiality? Anyone in the industry who would do that would immediately be considered personally untrustworthy to everyone else in the industry.
Underlings who would do this might get 15 minutes of fame but in the long run they would only be considered a disgruntled employee ('cause there's always two sides to every story) and their ethics would be called into question.

If you want to read professional people discussing their time with Prince:
Read DMSR by Per Nilsen.
Read POSSESSED by Alex Hahn.
both of those have quotes by people who talk about the behind the scenes stories of working of Prince. Both are excellent reads with tons of private insights. To me, they flesh out the Prince story and don't destroy the myth.
sorry my answer of 'yes' earlier was so brief. I was answering the subject of this topic.

You're crazy if you think Hahn's book is anywhere near the level of Per's - especially since a lot of it was recycled watered down info from Per anyway. And the rest was conjecture, opinion, half-truth, and lies.
There is yet to be ANY Prince book as good as "DMSR". The others do not even come close. |

Alex's book had some typos and factual errors about other performers (U2 info for example), but for the most part, his book was very accurate. Alan Leeds, the insider's insider wrote the foreword on it and was very complimentary about it's accuracy and it's scope. It may not have been the most complimentary of books, but at the core is the study of a flawed genius.
DMSR is great! I would also at UPTOWN's "THE VAULT" to the list.
Having done work on all 3 books, I can tell you that they are both filled with great stories based on interviews with many of the key players in Prince's career. I can't suggest these books nearly enough if you want to read how it went down from several points of view. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. I do own and love both books, but I have heard of some accuracy errors in Possessed. Like some of the things I've read in Possessed weren't even mentioned in DMSR, but of course that was few instances. Nevertheless, I love both. DMSR is more facts, Possessed is like a story with facts Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!! |
