Beautiful Strange VHS I know this was recorded during the Larry Graham period, but was this video any good?

I bought this last year on Ebay, but since I have not yet had in converted to dvd like the others, and I don't have a VCR anymore, I cannot give an honest view on it. As far as I can gather, it is the Mel B interview and Cafe De Paris aftershow that was shown on UK Channel 4 TV. There are also a couple of music videos on it. Nothing really special (imo).

I have it. It's okay.
My friend was one of the fans that was interviewed on it. We were at a show, and a guy walked up to her and said, "You! You're on Beautiful Strange!" "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

I like this release. I thought the interview was cool and relaxed. Also the aftershow was good, I like P and Chaka doing Sweet Thing. I have this in PAL version sent to me on accident when I ordered it that I could never play. If anyone who wants this for a small fee, feel free to contact me. Love41Another 💜

I like this video. Pretty good concert--I like that he didn't play the hits on this one. The interview was very Prince-esque....sort of evasive and meaningless once it was all said and done. There are some funny parts though. I would say to get it for your Prince collection.

That's what we say instead of the name. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

So what does Spud mean?
If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

Now I don't feel stupid for not getting that either. On another note, I did love Mel B's saying, "Romeo. Romeo. Let down your hair" followed by Prince correcting her with, "That's Rapunzel." Classic! "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"

Yeah, I remember Mel B's asking about "the truth" and Prince replying, "There is only one truth." Then when pressed further for clarification on what the hell that means, Prince just whistled. That's the moment I realized Prince just pulls stuff out of his ass to sound enlightened, but he really has no idea what he's talking about.

Some mixed opinions here. If it's any worse than Rave Un2 The Year 2000, I'm not getting it. I find the NewPower Soul album underrated anyway so I might like it.
Does anyone have any screenshots? [Edited 3/27/11 23:36pm]

Spud means Potato | |

That was soooo funny! Especially because he paused for a quick moment like something was just not computing, then corrected her in a tone that insinuated that he didn't find her to be that bright.

I hated it. The interview was toe-curlingly awful. The concert footage included WAY too much Doug E. Fresh. It was around the time of 'New Power Soul' which was somewhat bereft of musical merit.

This is excactly why I have not been in any rush to have this converted to dvd. I recorded all this when it was on UK tv, and was not very impressed.

I've had it ages all eye will say is prince is fantastic and mel b an utter twat Dave Is Nuttier Than A Can Of Planters Peanuts...(Ottensen)

Have tsay that Mel B was cringworthy - terrible interview IMHO - very predictable questions and sycophantic to point of painful to watch. This, along with the newpowersoul mediocrity of the time, makes this a completist's release only.
However, seeing Prince in the studio laying down some of 'Beautiful Strange' is cool.

I found it somewhere for $10 plus shipping, should I get it? I've seen the Mel B interview before and him in the studio laying down Beautiful Strange. If anything, I'd buy it for the concert footage, but I"m thinking the SOTT concert film might be more worth the $$ time flies.

If u can get both, good. SOTT is more of a hits setlist (with the music up until that point). Beautiful Strange is not the hits, but is a more rare setlist.

it's worth it just for Beautiful Strange and Come On
but it's not all that
i could certainly do without Doug E Fresh's annoying rapping (apart from on Come On) and Chaka Khan's annoying wailing and oversinging

There should never be a question between the two.
SOTT concert film is unmatched by any of Prince's video releases to date.

LoveSexy Live is his best live video release. SOTT isn't even live.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It's live. It was recorded on a stage. Performed, etc.
And it's still better than LoveSexy Live.

The live version of Come On here is astonishing, definitely one of the funkiest live recording officially released by Prince

But it's lip-synced with dodgy acting. If a real Sign O The Times Tour show was released on video, it would be better than LoveSexy Live.

I prefer everything about the SOTT movie. From the mood, to the music, to the stage setup. I feel LoveSexy Live, while a good show, is suffering from the round stage (not a fan of Prince doing round stages) and music that isn't as fresh or as innovative as the SOTT arrangements.
I get your point, but I can suspend my disbelief enough to appreciate what the SOTT concert film is. To me, it's a better representation of Prince's abilities than LL is. Opinions, opinions, opinions.
There still shouldn't be a question between BS and SOTT.

Agree about the SOTT Tour in general, just not the film. I don't like Prince's in-the-round stages that much either, although I don't mind the Musicology Tour stage.
