I keep hearing that Prince has said some nasty things about Janet over the years, but is there any proof of this? I do know that he was a consideration for a co-lead on Janet's "Love Will Never Do (Without You)", and that he supposedly had dinner with MJ, Janet and Latoya in the mid eighties. He has also performed "What Have You Done for Me Lately" in concert, and said "Y'all know who wrote this?" to the audience. Is he suggesting that he wrote it?

No. It was just a light-hearted comment at Jam/Lewis being the producers, them being previous members of The Time and - as Prince saw it then - taking the MPLS sound out of Prince's camp to outside artists.

I've never heard of Prince saying anything bad about Janet either.

Janet's "Nasty" came about because she was pursued by some hooligans when she first got to Minneapolis to record Control. She was inspired to write the song from that experience.

Like NouveauDance, I've never heard anything myself.

I probably should've said "snarky" instead of "nasty". I once read that, when asked what he thought of her, he replied "Sister of a genius." While that may be true, you can just see the snark in that remark, especially knowing how Prince can be at times. I do know that Janet has always claimed to be a big Prince fan.

Hmm...I don't know. I guess at the least, he was recognizing Michael's talent.

That's one of those things that a person might say off the cuff and then have it blown out of proportion.

Like when someone wins the academy award and forgets to thank his/her spouse and the media makes it seem intentional.

Janet seems like a sweet person. Why would our lil Prince-y pick on her?!

I'm sure he does have love for her. I think that was a radio interview where he said that about her, and the DJs were just trying to bait him. They asked him what he thinks of several artists, and when he said that about Janet, they all went "Ooooohhhh!!" He probably didn't mean anything by it.

I had heard that Janet originally wanted Prince to produce her album, and her parents forbade it... that they didn't want her dealing with Prince at all... so she got Jam & Lewis.

Always loved to here here shout out Minneapolis during Escapades. I think she truly held Minneapolis in her heart at one point.

The Minneapolis Sound is all Prince. There is no MPLS sound without Prince in the studio, making it happen.

Terry and Jimmy are extremely talented guys; they do not need to copy Prince's sound. To me, her albums sound impeccably 80s, but not MPLS sound. I never confused "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" or "Pleasure Principle" as Prince songs (or any of the other ones that come up all the time).

Learn to read I never said Jam and Lewis were not talented but when they started working with Janet she had the Minneapolis sound to the core they did not do this with all the artist they worked with. Ah, you took the words out of my mouth.

One of my favorite recent aftershows is the Copenhagen 2010 show, and they jam What Have You Done For Me Lately, flowing into Partyman. The beginning of the jam gave me chills because they touched on 100 MPH. While the bassline is very close, they never fully go into it. There is a moment where Blackwell does a fill that made me realize "Holy crap, they're doing 100 MPH!".This lasted about four seconds unfortunately. I've listened to it enough to realize it may have been something John and Ida did in the moment, not something Prince had them do. I don't know, but I would love to hear a full live version of 100 MPH with the current band.

The two songs share some similarities, but I don't think Jam and Lewis copied Prince.

With that said, someone please ask DJ Foefur make a mix of the two tracks. I think they would work together very well.

I think her last CD was the first one she went without Jimmy and Terry.

Janet and Tina frequented Glam Slam MPLS often when she was recording the "Janet." cd. I saw Janet and Prince chatting it up several times at the Erotic City after hours parties, while Tony and Tina were on the dance floor.

Janet's first album was far from the Minneapolis sound, because it was produced by Rene & Angela and The Sylvers. Her second album, "Dream Street" had Jesse Johnson on a couple of tracks, so I can see what you mean there. The Jesse-produced "French Blue" totally had that Prince sound, complete with backmasking and drum patterns (it's a mixture of the "Dream Street" tracks "Pretty Boy" and "Fast Girls").

Janet never really relied on an army of producers. The magic that is her, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (something I wish she'd get back to) can never be duplicated. It's usually just the three of them collaborating. Sometimes she writes the lyrics an they put music to it, or they co-write everything. She worked with Jellybean on "Black Cat" (she wrote the lyrics and he produced), and with "Discipline" there was an array of producers, but the magic is Janet, Jimmy and Terry.

Yeah. Joe Jackson is definitely not a fan. The quote that appears in Janet's "Design Of A Decade" says that Joe said to J&L - "You guys are from Minneapolis. Prince is from Minneapolis. I don't want my daughter sounding like Prince".

I was so sure when I was a kid that the first verse in Love Will Never Do was sung by a male co-leading voice, kind of Camilleish, I so wanted to know who it was and couldn't find anyone else credited for a so called duet in the CD booklet. I found out years later that Janet sung the whole thing when I first saw the video
