So, what is actually in the vault?

So, if you're on this site, you probably know what the vault is. P's released tracks from it here and there, but do we really know exactly what he has in there? Has anyone ever had enough sad, disposable hours actually figuring it all out? As far as I know, he's stashing:

-The Celebration documentary

-The 3121 movie

-Several videos, tracks, at least one entire album (Specifics?)

-20Ten Deluxe

I heard he destroyed a good half of it, at least, but that might a rumor, but no doubt it's pretty severely damaged anyway.

Tapes.

There was a great thread a couple years back, started by a fellow that had been an engineer at Paisley Park in the 90's. He said the vault was full of songs recorded to tape - some finished, most not.

His concern was that the tape would break down over the years, and he dearly hoped the music had been transferred to other storage devices, but he didn't know if it had been or not.

There are several unreleased tracks as we all know.

Several completed/incomplete projects unreleased.

Videos for songs that are unreleased.

Concert footage(Prince tapes all his concerts to assess his performance).

I'm pretty sure Prince has taken care of what in there. Some stuff we'll see come to light and alot of stuff we may never see.

True Prince. The stuff that is too good to be officially released. Unfortunately, the many gems and unparalleled masterpieces within, will probably never grace our ears...at least not any time soon.

The Beatles and the Doors master tapes are still playable so I doubt anything in Prince's vault is in trouble.

Anyway, whatever is in the vault is in there for a reason. I'm sure a great deal of it is leftover albums and videos from Prince's crazy spend-sprees in the first half of the 1990s before everyone in Minneapolis stopped working with Prince on a “bill-me-later” basis.

I don't think Femi actually made a thread here, rather someone had spoken to Femi during the celebration or something of the sort. Femi had come back to engineer the Rave sessions and I believe he was around at least until Rainbow Children. His prior tenure was during Lovesexy/Rave1.0 sessions.

There was something written about an enginneer (IIRC) saying the tapes were degrading due to age, but that is it - he hasn't destroyed a good half of it - you're probably getting the degrading quote mixed with the story of him wiping 'Wally' after recording it.

In the Vault (or various places - as there is actually a vault in PP, but it's likely material is also stored other places too) are: hundreds of full unreleased tracks, plus alternative/earlier/rough mix versions, unedited versions etc, configurations of albums un/released, as well as unreleased video projects like promo videos never used/released and Prince has also video recorded almost every live show he's ever performed for his own personal critique of them.

It's his material, and he can freely burn it if he chooses, but I hope it's being taken care of, because as an important American recording artist, it really will not belong to him forever. It's like the rough sketches and manuscripts of an artist, or the diaries and papers of an important writer - the body of work is a bigger thing entirely than record companies or charts etc. It would be a travesty if it was lost/destroyed because of fear/money/greed/vanity (take your pick).

There was also a thread that mentioned or quoted Hans-Martin Buff, the German guy who was around when Prince did Emancipation. As far as I recall, there were a couple of threads about or by certain engineeers, namely Femi, Chronic Freeze and HM Buff, and Buff was the one who talked about the tapes needing to be baked and digitalized in order to save what´s in the vault.

Ah haaaa.

Funny how there were so many engineers around back then and we all know them akin to celebrities.

Don't forget he listens to Jehovah.

Jehovah: "Prince...buddy...destroy all your old unreleased material....it's EVIL!"

Prince: "Yes, the highest one."

J: "Especially that Tony M. porn movie."

P: "Yes, my master."

J: "Replace every dirty word with Purple & Gold sample."

P: "I will, my master."

J: "And Prince...bring some cookies to a Kingdom Hall for Larry."

Prince claimed on Opera that he recorded about 1 song a day. Of course this is a staggering amount of material to be stashed away, as I would imagine he places them in the vaults.

He also once said that there are many vaults now (and even the old NPG website--you know the one with the ridiculous mansion you had to navigate through--had several 'vaults' in it).

I would be inclined to say that much of the music in the vaults aren't truly songs persay, but ideas for songs. I would also imagine there's a great deal of repetition going on in the vaults.

He once said in an interview that some of things that can be found in the vaults are great live recordings excited and some really good unreleased jazz material. ill

Kevin Smith also noted that while he was at Paisley Park he was tipped off to the fact that Prince recorded full blown, full production, music videos, documentaries, performances, etc. in video format and basically just placed them in the vaults.

I would venture to guess this is in there:

1. Thousands of unfinished songs

2. Between 1 and 2 thousand finished songs, many in album configurations already.

3. A hundred (or potentially hundreds) of videos

4. Dozens and dozens of covers of other people's music

5. Zelaira

You're a real fucker. You act like you own this place--ParanoidAndroid <-- about as witty as this princess gets! lol

Oh how jaded some of us are. smile

The fact we have over 600 unreleased songs IN CIRCULATION proves there is a vault. Surely you don't think that the entirety of Prince's unreleased catalog was completely leaked to the public.

600 unique, complete (or nearly complete) songs? or does that include slight variations of songs?

Yeah right vault in your fantasy, most singers on Prince's range have a vault, the idea that his vault is so unique is a fantasy and most of the 600 unreleased songs aren't as good as you wish them to be. I'm sure P has about few hundred songs in his studio right now (most of them shit in his own mind), but none of them are what's your fantasy.
