The fact we have over 600 unreleased songs IN CIRCULATION proves there is a vault. Surely you don't think that the entirety of Prince's unreleased catalog was completely leaked to the public.

Yeah right vault in your fantasy, most singers on Prince's range have a vault, the idea that his vault is so unique is a fantasy and most of the 600 unreleased songs aren't as good as you wish them to be. I'm sure P has about few hundred songs in his studio right now (most of them shit in his own mind), but none of them are what's your fantasy.

GET A FUCKING LIFE lol lol lol lol

It's not mythical if it actually exists. Show me another artist of prince's level that has 600+ unreleased songs that have leaked. Hint: you can't find one.

It's mythical when Smashing Pumpkins say they recorded 60 songs for Mellon Collie. It's not mythical when we KNOW for a fact 600+ songs exist for Prince because we own them. This is not a myth, it is a real life statistic.

There is a REAL, PHYSICAL vault inside Paisley Park.

There is a picture of the vault (door) in the artwork for C&D.

Also, people like Eric Leeds have spoken about being given the keys to the vault to look through stuff for recording purposes.

That's the vault where Prince keeps his money and gold items in, not the unrelseased songs.

It's none of our business really where he keeps his unreleased recordings. If they are not released it's not our concern.

How so? There were 28 songs on the album plus another 28 that were released as b-sides or on The Aeroplane Flies High. That's almost sixty songs and if you look at the various pieces of songs that made up "Pastichio Medley" it is reasonable to assume that they recorded over sixty songs for that album. I'll grant you that not all of them made it past the demo stage and might not be fully produced but I think they easily recorded sixty songs during that era.

It was a shot in the dark, but you prove my point. It's not mythical that he would have 10 times that amount given he has been recording for twice as long as the Pumpkins and we know he records the majority of his live shows, rehearsals, etc. Lots of jam session tracks that are about at the level of demo stage or higher. We know Prince crafted songs at a rapid rate and he eclipsed the released output of many artists just in the 80s alone. There's 20 some odd years to account for.

what are you raving about? lol I never said Prince did not have lots of unreleased music, I meant "The Vault" had become a mythical term for his unreleased music, like it was Wonka's chocolate factory or something.

In actuality it's a bunch of degrading tapes of songs that for the most part he was right to not release, and who knows where he keeps them

If there is an actual vault I stand corrected, but "The Vault" has been mythologized by fans, both the ones who have bootlegs and the ones who don't

Agreed. Prince definitely has a ton of fully produced and complete songs in the can. A good deal of them have leaked but other than tracks that were released through the NPGMC we have virtually no idea what is in the vault that was recorded circa 1997-present. It's probably safe to say that for every one song that was officially released there is at least one song that was not.

Would all the sceptics feel better if we called it a cupboard/closet with a steel door, instead of "the vault?"

Tapes.

There was a great thread a couple years back, started by a fellow that had been an engineer at Paisley Park in the 90's. He said the vault was full of songs recorded to tape - some finished, most not.

His concern was that the tape would break down over the years, and he dearly hoped the music had been transferred to other storage devices, but he didn't know if it had been or not.

I don't think Femi actually made a thread here, rather someone had spoken to Femi during the celebration or something of the sort. Femi had come back to engineer the Rave sessions and I believe he was around at least until Rainbow Children. His prior tenure was during Lovesexy/Rave1.0 sessions.

No, it wasn't Femi Jaya. It was another guy who requested anonymity but had worked with Femi. He came here looking for Femi, and then decided to take our questions and give all the answers he could for a week or so.

His identity was verified, and he was indeed who he said he was. It was a great thread, but it was deleted at the author's request.

...his career?

I bet every musician in the world would love to be in Prince's shoes right now. Dude hasn't released an album in the USA in two years and hasn't had a new song played on the radio since 2005 or so, and yet can sell out large arenas for days in a row with little promotion or lead time.

If that's a dead career, then we should all have such dead careers!

When he left Warners, he ran off all the parasites that were stealing his tapes and issuing bootlegs.

That's why you haven't had a bootleg of anything other than live stuff in more than a decade.

I'm sure lots of people saved it as a text file. Unfortunately, I didn't or you'd already have it. But I bet you can poll a few of the usual suspects and find it.

And yeah - ChronicFreeze was the ID of the guy making the posts. Maybe the person that remembered his name might have some saved threads. wink
