GLEE COVER ON INTERNET The Glee cover of Kiss is all over internet, for anyone who's interested. It seems they've released an album with the song in advance of episode airing next week. Lyrics and music seem to be just like original, including 'little girl wendy's parade'. The guy's falsetto doesn't quite work though, IMO. Not bad, not great - still better than Tom Jones...oye.

The "guy" is Gwyneth Paltrow
you can listen to it here (an official preview of the album, not a leak)

WAAYYYYYYYY better than Tom Jones. I love Tom and I hate Glee, but I think it's actually quite nice. Mainly because they completely copied the music, unlike Tom who murdered it with the AON : /

Not feeling it. It's not bad but not great either. They always cover it exact the same, they never put anything new to it. Boring. Check out my Youtube!

I refuse to have any part of that. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Decent...better than I thought it would be, and Im a Gleek. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

hate this show with a passion but this is not a bad cover. Good for P, he needs the money.

did they re-create the music or did prince give 'em the instrumental?

A decent cover and cant deny the appeal of Glee to the masses and its a pretty funny show.
The music sounds like its straight from Prince!!!!
just gotta gotta...
The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

I just threw up a little bit... "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

FYI: it is the album edit not the single version. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

i'm sure Prince okayed this cover...

they dont need his permission

For TV they do. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

WB okayed it.
Prince did not. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

I don't think that they do, for that, either. People perform covers on TV all the time and they don't need the artists permission to do so (unless they alter it significantly, making it legally a new composition that interpolates the original one).
I could be wrong. But I don't think I am.

yeah I could be wrong too. But I believe that to cover a song no permission is needed but to broadcast it there is. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Maybe it's an international thing and they don't need it for places like the US and UK but might do for other territories. Or maybe the fact that it's apparently being sung as a duet between Matt Morrison and Gwyneth Paltrow is enough difference for it to be considered more than just a simple cover.
I dunno, I'm just grasping at straws. We haven't seen any evidence that Prince has actually tried to stop them doing it, and the episode is going out next week so obviously the show creators don't see it as a problem. |

Turned out better than I expected. The Prince version is still better, but if you look at what they did to Thriller I'm glad they didn't completely butcher Kiss. You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

Not very special i think. Art of noise /Tom Jones is better.

You need permission of the copyright owner to "sync" the music to video. Which is what they are doing in Glee (or an awards show). Assuming, Prince didnt grant permission (and you know he wouldnt), it would seem then that Prince doesnt own 100% of Kiss and thus WB (if its a coowner) can grant the permission as long as Prince gets his share of the money.

Is that true though? So you're saying I'm perfectly entitled to cover a song if I choose to - but if I then want to perform that cover on TV, I'll need permission? That's interesting if true. Illogical, but hey, so is a lot of law especially in this regard |

... wifey loves the show and we've been going back and forth about the up-coming 'Kiss' episode. I liked when they did 'Safety Dance'. Didn't like when they did 'Thriller'. Sounds to karaoke to me, oh well. Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

You guys...
Even tho' it's TV (FOX in this case), this is not immediately a matter of doing this without any permission or some technical lawyer stuff.
Glee is a very popular show. Many artists and companies are dying to let their songs be covered on that show and will happily give permission to use their stuff.
Glee/FOX probably have the necessary licenses and in case they don't, they have enough to offer.
It's a business.

Genesia said: I refuse to have any part of that. They showed a clip of it in the Glee commercial during the NAACP awards show last night and I was appalled that I heard it. Bleck! I'm firmly planted in denial
