Prince is far from the first or the only artist to throw a guitar in the audience. Most every other artist knows the routine and follows it accordingly:

You switch guitars on the song you are going to give the guitar away on. A cheap Squier or Ibanez or even a lesser known brand like SX or something can be had for very little $.

You play a few chords on it and maybe a solo, then you unplug it and toss it. You don't toss a $10k Aurswald or something like that into the audience. As the guy said, its CUSTOMARY for the audience memebers to keep what gets thrown to them by performers. The guy is not the odd one - PRINCE IS, but fanbots around here are trying to make it seem the other way around.

Now dude may have been a bit unrealistic for asking for it after the show was over but at the moment, its a reasonable assumption. Only Prince fanbots who believe Prince is always right no matter what would think its outrageous to think that. Idolworship is not a good look.

If he was foolish enough to pay $700+ to see ANYBODY, he's foolish enough to walk away with his tail between his legs. Serves him right. lol

I was at this show and saw it happen. What a night it was... The concert was amazing, I don't get the throwing the guitar in the audience then asking for it back. I love you prince, but I wouldn't have given it back if I caught it!

Because at CONCERTS, when an artist on the stage threw something to an audience member...until Prince started doing his shit...it was USUALLY customary that whomever caught it...got to keep it!

You said it's all part of the Rock N Roll thing, right? Then PLEASE...show me just ONE instance of ANY other Rock N Roll artist...stateside or worldwide...throwing something...anything...to an audience member...that WAS NOT AN OFFICIAL PART OF THE ACT...and then taking it back.

Go ahead, I'll wait. bored2

lol Patti Labelle kicks her shoes off into the crowd almost always and asks for them back!!! Thats the one time I can think of. fishslap

I've PERSONALLY been to SIX Patti LaBelle concerts in my lifetime...and at NONE of them did she kick her shows off INTO the audience AND send someone to get them back.

I, however, have seen TWO people...catch them and give them back...WILLFULLY on their own...AND got them autographed and GIVEN back to them! nod

If the guy was literally beat down by people at the concert, not cool...but how anyone, at any show, could think that they would then be the owner of the guitar is beyond me...it would just be common sense to me that the performer would still own the guitar...it would be shocking to me to find out the man was actually beat up, knocked over and trampled maybe, but even then, not in an evil way...i remember when P jammed literally for like a minute with Maceo in Vegas back in 2005 if i'm remembering right...he seemed pissed with the sound....he lifted the guitar above his head and dropped it into the crowd and it hit a girl in the head...all the people around her were checking to see if she was ok...i watched the news video...this guy's a moro n...

Yet I'd imagine, particularly in a country that requires coffee cups to have "Warning: hot" printed on them

I purchase coffee all of the time on the go, and I've never seen such labeling. Where did you come across it?

Personally I haven't, which is why I said I'd be happy to be corrected, but I heard this was the case after the woman successfully sued McDonalds over this - initially for over $2M (eventually reduced to $640k) - back in 1994 (http://en.wikipedia.org/w...estaurants).

However, after googling to get a reference for it, I found another website (http://www.talkaboutcoffe...myths.html) that was supposedly debunking the myths around the case and saw this:

Myth #2: There was no warning on the coffee cup.

Actually, the cup was marked with a warning that the coffee was hot. The jury, however, felt that the warning was neither large enough nor obvious enough.

Awesome.

I trust the woman who tried to sue Starbucks because their warning was too small and she was dyslexic and thus had a car accident because she was trying to read it while driving was unsuccessful (http://scrapetv.com/News/...-side.html), but I didn't investigate.

Quite frankly, I don't want to know.

This incident is just further proof that it's no longer like the the old NPG Music Club days when Prince made sure that it was his true die-hard fans that were in the VIP seats! Back then, if Prince gave us his guitar to hold during the show, we knew it was just temporary. However, nowadays there are casual fans that are only up front because they are fortunate enough to be able to afford the high prices, and Prince does not realize that these people do not know him like we do! If he wants to keep giving his guitar to the audience, he needs to make sure that his true fans are the ones up front again! That's all I'm saying!

That's a really good point.

It's interesting to see the different perspectives here - ie. what different people's definitions of "common sense" etc... are. What is "blindingly obvious" seems poles apart, depending on your experience of the world.

I like the idea of living in a society where fun things can happen, such as an artist throwing a prized possession into the crowd (after making eye contact so he doesn't clock someone in the head) and trust that it will come back to him - rather than the society that says, "you threw it, I keep it".

It's not that one is right and the other is wrong - it's just that my preference is to enjoy the freedom that comes with the mindset of the former.

As for why he does it? It looks so damn cool!! razz

Why should Prince stop doing this?...it's all part of the Rock N Roll thing. All i hope is that next time he boots the drums over on the Prawn sandwich Evian sipping brigade... lol

lol @ the post, but definitely agree about this distracting from the most important news of all, which was how awesome that concert obviously was. Pity that's what gets left out of most of the news reports.

Is that true? Required? How embarrasing.

I'm more than happy to be corrected on that, but I did hear that as a result of a law suit (I think involving McDonald's?) where a lady spilt hot coffee on herself and blamed the restaurant to the tune of many $$$ that many places now label their coffee so as to protect against litigation.

Whether it's literally required by law or not I'm not sure, but if you can be sued for not doing so then...same diff, really.

Yeah, really ridiculous! Kind of like the person who ate McDonalds everyday and got fat and sued McD's for it. Ridiculous. Not to mention, "Dangerous" has to be put on a packet of cigs. This country has ridiculous rules! This man needs to STFU and realize how things work. For pete's sake, if you don't know how it works, then that's your problem. But once you find out, accept it, and get the f*ck over it. Me and 3 other people were fighting over holding it at this one concert, the guy quickly came over to get it. lol I was just happy to touch it!

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

This should be no different than getting a game ball. Hendrix used to switch guitars to the cheap ones he planned on destroying on stage and threw that out to the fans. The Who just stole their equipment.

There's also the question if it was house security or Prince's crew that demanded it back.

But I expect people in 800 dollar seats not to beat down other concertgoers, and in terms of memorabilia, would've had to have proof at the show, if P didn't have any sort of ID on his guitars. The guy's from San Rafael, and that's an expensive area to live in. Santana and 'Tallica live around there.

Simple solution - instead of throwing it out to the fans, have some of the kids from the places the money is going to up on stage and play some music. I'd love to see some 10 year old guitar prodigy go up and shred with Prince for a minute. For $750 he should be doing meet and greets and signing stuff for 15 minutes.

falloff Shiiiit!!! You need to add some more $ signs, 1's, K's or something! The way I heard it...just weeks ago...Prince bailed out on some folks that dropped up to $50,000 to see him in Dallas! I'm just saying. lurking

Looks like that guy wasn't the only one who swore Prince's guitar belonged to him. Remember this discussion on the Org back in 2009...

http://prince.org/msg/7/302567

...and this one from TMZ? The guy actually thought Prince gave him the guitar and had the nerve to whine that it wasn't for keeps.

Prince Indian Gives Guitar to TMZ Staffer

http://www.tmz.com/2009/0...z-staffer/

Hey everybody, Daniel from TMZ here. So last night Prince gave me his guitar ... and then some guy took it back.

Play video

Daniel at TMZ.com said:

" I was lucky enough to sit front row during a taping of “The Tonight Show.” I was there for one reason, and one reason only — to see Prince. After suffering through Paul Giamatti and Emma Roberts, Prince came on and performed “Dreamer.”

As the song was winding down, Prince took off his guitar and walked out into the crowd — I had no idea what he was doing. He walked right up to me and just simply handed me his guitar and walked away. I stood there stunned for about 20 seconds while my friend Trent went nuts. We both kinda strummed the guitar before I turned around and held it up to the crowd triumphantly.

After another 30 seconds or so, someone came around and retrieved the guitar Now, I was all excited about this whole thing — calling and texting everyone I can think of. But when I came to work today, everyone said the same thing — PRINCE OWES YOU A GUITAR. I believe Harvey’s quote was, “You’re a schmuck for giving it back.”

Why? Are there fixed rules about these things?

Prince's concert. Prince's rules.

Hendrix used to switch guitars to the cheap ones he planned on destroying on stage and threw that out to the fans. The Who just stole their equipment.

He's not Hendrix, nor is he The Who.

I actually think it's seriously cool that he would throw his beloved Hohner into the crowd in complete faith and trust that it will come back to him in one piece.

There's also the question if it was house security or Prince's crew that demanded it back.

Standard practice seems to be that one of Prince's crew always retrieves the guitar.

A couple of people here and in the concert thread have suggested that he didn't seem to want to throw it to the audience that night, but that his crewman wasn't ready to catch it, so in the end he made eye contact with this dude and threw it to him instead.

Simple solution - instead of throwing it out to the fans, have some of the kids from the places the money is going to up on stage and play some music. I'd love to see some 10 year old guitar prodigy go up and shred with Prince for a minute.

That's not really a solution so much as a completely seperate idea. I'm pretty sure these weren't charity gigs, so I'm not sure which children would be getting up on stage.

For $750 he should be doing meet and greets and signing stuff for 15 minutes.

Why? It wasn't advertised as part of the ticket price. He set those prices, people paid for them, end of story. If a time comes that no one buys them at that price, then maybe he needs to think about either reducing the price or offering more incentive. But signing stuff was never part of the deal, nor was his guitar.

Prince always throws his guitar to a fan or stage hand any real fan knows this. Obviously this man wasn’t a fan. But this time Prince couldn’t find his stage hand and decided to throw it to a fan instead. But he always have someone retrieve it almost immediately..Too bad this man got beaten in the process.I wouldn't mind having that 20TEN guitar pick though....

After thinking about this off & on throughout the day, here's my final thoughts on the matter. I know y'all have been dying to hear them. LOL

Prince has been taking a big risk just tossing his guitar out to the audience. As I said earlier, cool, but risky.

This dude is naive and kinda annoying thinking he should be able to keep the guitar.

And finally, those who rushed the guy, roughed & bruised him up and acted like COMPLETE DICKHEADS, are, as a friend of mine says, a waste of carbon. Shame on them for their asinine behavior.
