Who should've gotten "Sex Shooter"?

During the completion of the Apollonia 6 album, it was evident Prince was losing his interest in the concept. He left them with one great solid tune, "Sex Shooter", and gave the rest away!

"The Glamorous Life" - given to Sheila E

"Xtra Lovable" - unreleased

"Take Me With U" - given to Prince & the Revolution

"17 Days" - given to Prince & the Revolution

"G Spot" - given to Jill Jones

"Manic Monday" - given to the Bangles

While the rest of the songs on the App6 album are okay, none quite hit the pop sensibility of "Sex Shooter". I've always thought the song was an instant classic hit which deserved a better vehicle. So, who should he have given it to?

Personally, I think the song sounds better coming from the perspective of a man. The obvious choice would be to give it to Prince, but maybe it could've worked better coming from the Time (especially the rap at the end).

Thoughts?

Maybe it could have been a Prince & the Revolution with Susan & Brenda or a total Prince camp jam

To be honest, I listen to the Vanity 6 version and they just kill it. Vanity owned that song. It rocked it worked and when I hear Vanity 6 on it it definately sounds better coming from a woman.

Damn Prince & Vanity

If Vanity stayed that album would have been hot. The set list of songs you mentioned would have just been a killer album

A significant number of songs given to the proteges should have been covered by the opposite gender (Wet Dream, The Stick, The Belle of St. Mark, If the Kid Can't Make You Come), so Sex Shooter fits right in, in that sense. I think Prince was all about switching up gender roles and identities. Given that, the only other place it could have gone at the time is with Sheila E., and I don't think that would have been a good fit at all.

Also, I don't agree with you that it's an instant classic. It's a solid song worthy of inclusion in the movie. Beyond that...it's just an okay song (that I love).

I guess I think of the concept of a sex shooter and kissing a gun as a very phallic sort of thing. I see how, in Prince World, it works coming from a woman, too, though. I would've loved for a Prince version to be a B-side.

If Vanity had stuck with it and they made that album, I can't even imagine how awesome that would've been. It would possibly have continued the life of the project as a whole!

I have not listened much to the lyrics of the protege stuff, tbh. I like some stuff here and there, but a lot of it never really popped out to me (especially stuff for Sheila and the Time).

You don't think "Sex Shooter" is a classic, though!? Oh man. How can you resist the hook? The bassline? His use of guitars on the song is really awesome, too, because it's just enough guitar to keep it funky. It's such a strong r&b track, I really think it has legs to stand on that Apps didn't do justice to.

I love the protege stuff. Thanks 2 computer, I love creating playlists of the album era's for some reason they seem to tell a story. Like mixing music from What Time Is It? Vanity 6 1999 and a few of the outtakes & Bsides you get a story, and you can get into the protege music a lot more too

I love how Sex Shooter has a swagger to it (the A6 version) Apollonia couldn't pull off a protege show like Vanity could.

the V6 version was Punk Funk Rock it is red hot

Definately 2 different feels, the one in the movie(A6) definately worked best, because if the V6 version was there it would have 2 be a full band performance

Really? The Stick's main line is "You just cum too quick/I'll have to use my stick" ("stick" meaning vibrator or dildo). And If the Kid Can't Make You Come could maybe be sung by a male...but it's definitely weird for Morris to be singing about Prince's/The Kid's sexual prowess.

Oh, and I should have added Get It Up to my list above!

And if the Kid Can't Make U come, I always thought would have been the music to the Barn scene in PR

Sheila also got Oliver's House - I want to say NTWTLOYCollar too, but not sure IIRC?

I don't see any other female act around performing it (too all-out sexy for Sheila), but if you think it would be good from a male POV, I say Mazarati were the only ones in the camp to give it justice - I imagine Terry singing it hard like in 'Suzy'.

I never knew that Extraloveable was an Apollonia 6 outtake. Are you sure about that? It was written and recorded long before shooting the movie began.

As far as Sex Shooter is concerned, I am so used to Apollonia singing it that I can´t really imagine it any other way. I first heard the other versions years, if not a decade, after watching Purple Rain, so to me it is definitely Apollonia´s song now. lol

Sure, he took the best songs and gave them to other people but there are still a couple of really strong songs on the A6 album, and they probably meant a lot to Prince, too, since he dug one of them out and compared it to one of Jimmy Jam and Terry´s songs, accusing them of biting off of his songs (Blue Limousine and Borrowed Love, you know, on his 3121 website years ago).

I like the song Sex Shooter and it has all the ingredients of a great, mid 80s Prince classic in it. The first few seconds always give me an aural orgasm. I love that sound, the video and all.

I have always wondered how different an album Apollonia 6 would have sounded with the songs that Prince took away left intact.

They were strong songs indeed, which is probably one of the reasons behind his decision to take them off the album.

I think that Sex Shooter was a perfect choice for the Apollonia album. I can't imagine Sheila or The Time doing it.

"Xtra Lovable" and "No Call U" were both done during the sessions for the followup to Vanity 6's first album. Forgot to add "No Call U" up there.

Oh I can see the Glamorous Life Sheila E doing sex shooter

and then ripping into 2 Sexy or Shortberry Strawcake

I really believe the album was stripped down because Vanity left. Prince knew Vanity could hold her own and was a really frontman

You can't see Morris singing "Sex Shooter"? I imagine him having almost the perfect voice for it, if I weren't more partial to hearing Prince release it himself.

Again, the whole concept seems masculine to me and while that might not matter much in the world of 1984 Prince, "Sex Shooter" almost feels like a natural next to songs like "Erotic City" or "17 Days" or "Computer Blue" even.

I really think If The Kid cant make ya Cum is supposed to be sung by Prince, Shooter by a male and The Stick by a female. I made a post about this gender reverse role songs before too. Prince was writing for everyone to do a part back then hahah. I think Shooter is a classic myself. Oh that---drum shuffle sound is so awesome.

Of course the greatest steal it back for myself song is 17 Days as previously mentioned.

I'll probably get slaughtered for this, but I've always thought the song went to the right group. I'm one of those people who even likes the Apollonia 6 version, more than the original with Vanity.

And that's saying alot, because I've always loved Vanity.
