Prince studio version of COOL Ok, after seeing P tear up "COOL" last night in Oakland. Is there a studio version of COOL? I don't think there is on THE WORK set..
Anyone know if it exists? "Paisley Park is in your Heart"

There's one by The Time....and Snoop Dog...lol
I wouldn't like any studio versions. It's my favorite song live. The Time...meh...it's okay but Prince rips it live!!! You can tell it's his favorite too. .......Oh-oh-oh, by the way...He plays guitar.

The version on the debut Time album is as close as you'll get.
And given how loud P's backing vocals are through the whole damn album, it might as well be his song, LOL.
It's still funny to me that they tried to say it wasn't him back when The Time started. You can hear his damn voice all the time! |

It isn't circulating no.
Prince would put down a guide vocal for Morris (and other protege acts) to imitate - So if Prince's version still exists and since he recorded the track for the Time (as opposed to giving them an existing track) it would most likely be this guide vocal. Much like the circulating studio version of 'Chocolate', or the Family tracks with Prince's vocal.

The version on the Time's first album IS prince's studio version. THe only part that isnt him is Morris Day's lead vocal.

Isn't there a demo version of Dez Dickerson doing "Cool"? Unfortunately, I haven't heard it, I've only heard about it.
I know the music is his, but I've wondered how much Prince added to the lyrics, whether the call and response was his idea, ect.

I think you're thinking of his version of 'After Hi-School' on the 2CD Retrospective

I thought Dez wrote the lyrics for "Cool" and Morris did "After High School"?

After High School is definitely a Dez Dickerson composition. He has a definite musical style, you can hear the similarities between this track and "He's So Dull" which he wrote for Vanity 6.
He did co-write the "Cool" lyrics with Prince, too. The music on "Cool" is Prince though, not Dez. |

Absolutely thumping live, definitely the highlight of the Rome show last fall. What is awesome about this song it oozes cool, the music is exactly what the lyrics describe. Prince is a musician not a lifestyle.
