I thought so. But really listening to the lyrics, I could see somebody or families going through some of that with the lost of family member or friend.

It always strikes me as slightly bizarre how many people on a fan site know so little about the widely available released material.

And not wanting to belittle your second comment but let's face it, any song about someone who's snuffed it is gonna speak to someone somewhere.

You wanna better one then listen to Wires by Athlete. It's about his newborn daughter's admittance to intensive care. Admittedly she lived so it's a happy ending but the panic, terror and tears are so well sung. I guess when you really sing something from the heart is needs to have been there first.

NB: Interesting opening line for a song too, macabre until understood.

There's an (unintended?) homoeroticism to the song that if you didn't know about the film could sound much more meaningful than it apparently is. Given the times, it could almost sound like the goodbye to a lover who died from AIDS.

It's a beutiful song. Probably one of the most personal ones for Prince. But yes, I would agree the songs is certainly about a man who was in love with another man. A lot of the UTCM movie was over the top with everything.

Tracy died soon after a long fought civil war,

(was this a war with someone else or one internally....like AIDS)

just after I'd wiped away his last tear

(why was he crying? Did they know their relationship was coming to an end?)

I guess he's better off than he was before,
A whole lot better off than the fools he left here

I used 2 cry 4 Tracy because he was my only friend
Those kind of cars don't pass u every day

(what is he saying, why use the word cars?)

I used 2 cry 4 Tracy because I wanted to see him again,
But sometimes sometimes life ain't always the way...

Sometimes it snows in April
Sometimes I feel so bad, so bad
Sometimes I wish life was never ending,
and all good things, they say, never last

Springtime was always my favorite time of year,
A time 4 lovers holding hands in the rain

(so he talks about lovers holding hands in the above, the the next lyric says it only reminds him of Tracy's tears)

Now springtime only reminds me of Tracy's tears
Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain

(early in the song he mentioned he wiped away Tracy's tear. And in the above he says he only cried for love)

He used 2 say so strong unafraid to die
Unafraid of the death that left me hypnotized
No, staring at his picture I realized
No one could cry the way my Tracy cried

(the above line is really enlightening, the way MY tracy cried. Staring at his picture.)

Sometimes it snows in April
Sometimes I feel so bad
Sometimes, sometimes I wish that life was never ending,
And all good things, they say, never last

I often dream of heaven and I know that Tracy's there
I know that he has found another friend

(what kind of friend?)

Maybe he's found the answer 2 all the April snow
Maybe one day I'll see my Tracy again

Sometimes it snows in April
Sometimes I feel so bad, so bad
Sometimes I wish that life was never ending,
But all good things, they say, never last

All good things that say, never last
And love, it isn't love until it's past

Oh why do people post the lyrics??

Any Prince fan knows the words and it just takes up space on a thread!!!

i'm sorry but i think that is reading waaaay to much into it. even though prince sings it, it could all be from the point of view of kristin scott thomas's character which makes a lot more sense. considering prince is singing about his own character it doesnt really make any sense to try to make it gay. i mean what, hes gay for himself? it is just a movie people.

What is the sense of even trying. If you don't believe Prince is bi, then you don't know Prince. That simple. And honestly, it's his business until he reveals it in a song released publicly.

When you live in Minneapolis, you hang out with friends and girlfriends/ "friends" of PRN. You know what is up. But you say the truth here and people flip out.

Just like about his brother. Prince did not get along with him. Word was he disputed thier relation. But does anyone want to hear this? Sickens me sometimes as to what is the truth, and what people want to believe.

Hmm... I initially scoffed at the 'gay' angle (not homophobic, I just never saw the song that way), but I have to admit: the "long-fought civil war" line never made sense to me, until you guys brought up the AIDS question...

its got nothing to do with if i think prince is bi or not. i dont really care. we are talking about a specific song, from a movie, about a specific character in a film. why isnt it concievable that it is simply a song from a movie and not a personal statement from prince?

couldnt the civil war just be christopher's change from being a playboy taking advantage of women to actually falling in love with one?

Same subject, different song:

Anna Stesia

Have U ever wanted 2 play
With someone so much U'd take
Any one boy or girl?

How many other songs make this kind of reference?

Jack U off (jack who off?)

Head? Why not "Cunnilingus?"

Civil war defined:

1. A war between factions or regions of the same country.
2. A state of hostility or conflict between elements within an organization: "The broadcaster is in the midst of a civil war that has brought it to the brink of a complete management overhaul" (Bill Powell).
3. Civil War The war in the United States between the Union and the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865. Also called War Between the States.
4. Civil War The war in England between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists from 1642 to 1648.
So, no I don't think this has anything to do with a playboy taking advantage of a women he fell in love with. I mean MAYBE if they were married for a long time. But in the movie he actually did not get a long with her, but then later fell in love. It was not a civil war (a nation fighting itself or a couple figthing internally). I could understand this to mean a war witin, as fighting a disease. Lets not forget Prince has wrote about AIDS before. Not sure if thats the disease, but I do believe that line is less about the movie and more about a "friend" he lost. If it was written from his love interests in the movie, then why didn't a woman sing it as what was done in "I Wonder U" where the femal character was shown "wondering" about Prince?
And come on now, you see Prince and Jeome Benton together and some of those scenes and there is some gay jokes about them being a couple. One ponders if it wasn't Jerome's character singing this song.

Learn to quote then. Your post didn't follow directly either post that mentioned homo-eroticism.

Besides, this thread is just another excuse to post:

Yeah!

lol

Seriously, it's just a song for the end of Under The Cherry Moon. Hence the mention of "Tracy." Enjoy it, and don't read so much into it.

Either that, or he was writing about Tracy Morgan, years before he was famous.

Songs are what you want them to be.

Broaden your mind and think meanings up for yourself and what you belive.

What about videos?

If your straight a well known muscian who supposeldly is homophobic, would you let a man do this to you?

Wasn't he wearing no underwear at the time?

Ahhhhhh.

Remember when George Micheal showed the world his ass on the Faith Album?

Isn't that essentially what Prince did here?

How much proof do you need?

NAte - U r wrong

"head" is sung from the girls point of view

like what she "said" and what she is "going 2 do"

and "Anna Stesia" is about something beyond the flesh beyond boy or girl.

Similar 2 his message in "I would die 4 U"

and "Jack U Off" is just one in a long line of words or phrases that Prince uses 4 boy or girl like "cologne" AND "perfume"

he uses them interchangable like 4 both masculine and feminine.

Ok what about the above video?

I can come up with more examples and you know it smile

IN the end it doesn't matter. Prince is a great musician. I just wish he would stop acting like a homophobe.

I think songs have a general meaning that the artist gives them, but most listeners interject with their own beliefs or ideals to make the song more meaningful to them. Unless Prince told you personally what mindset he was in when writing this song and what it actually means, one can only hypothesize about the implied meaning. So what this thread has become is a potpourri of inferences about something that probably not as specific as we want to make it out to be. Maybe the song's meaning is complex, maybe it's straightfoward. This is simply an argument of opinions so there's no need to get so heated.

yeah, I always think of this when I listen to the song. it makes it more poignant than thinking about it being Prince's character in the movie and that sissy flop he does when he gets shot lol

I'm pretty sure it had to have been written about someone/something else and got the "Tracy" tacked onto it. a la "Little Girl Wendy's Parade"

There are others here who know more than me. You don't see them going out of their way to deny it. But as I said, it's all good. Doesn't matter. Just wish he was cool about everything he is or isn't. I think then he could really be himself and focus on music rather than pretend to be completely something he isn't
