I am deeply suprised that no1 is saying 'SLOW LOVE' considering it was the best performance of a Prince song (on the SOTT film) and was not to be bettered again until SHHH on the WELCOME 2 the Dawn project.

That live version of Slow Love, when P strips down, does some ballet style high kicks and does the Japanese bow at the end is in his top 5 performances of all time and rockets SLOW love to the title of best song on SOTT .. imho neutral

Witness Absoultely tramples 60% of the songs in Prince's entire valut, and is probably among his 10 best never released songs. So yes, I can understand somebody defending these 3 songs, but saying NO to the trade for the 3 I selected? I doubt hardly anybody would.

I can't tell. It's my favourite Prince album, it's one of my favourite albums of all time. It includes what for me are the best 3 songs Prince ever composed: Housequake, TBODP and IIWYG.

It's easier for me to name the few weeker songs on it: Adore is a run-of-the-mill ballad with nothing special on it (Slow Love is millions of times better), Play In The Sunshine is just so-so (to put it mildly) and The Cross absolutely horrifies me (both words and music). The album would benefit so much from not having that absolute turd on it, even if no other song replaced it. It's the only song on the album I absolutely can't stand.

Would you care to explain why you like "it" so much? I've never heard someone say that before...

I don't get how people WOULD'NT love this track. An incredibly horny Prince at his minimalist best. It's not my fave, but its up there!

yeshh! i couldnt help but notice that hardly anybody even mentions this song.. somebody on the first page listed basically every song on the album as the best ones.. and they left out "it" o_O

its probably my favorite on the album. i love the whole thing though (except housequake.. i just like that one). my second fave would probably be strange relationship.

mad No no no no no....can't take away It, which has always been one of my faves. Also don't get why people dis It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night. Great live party track imo. Hot Thing is ok...but damned if it doesn't get stuck in my head for days after hearing. Also totally dig Eric's sax on that one. Seriously, leave SOTT the way it is, since it IS perfection.

Fave tho? really hard to pick just one...But I'll say Ballad of Dorothy Parker

If your choices were you could only keep one set of there between:

Hot Thing, It, and Beautiful Night....or Crystal Ball, Witness, and Old Friends(original)

If anybody in their right mind chose the first 3, I would also figure Jughead is their favorite off of Diamonds And Pearls, and that they think Wedding Feast is the best track off of TRC.

Hot Thing and It are not bad songs....just not that great. It uses the same percussion notes as When Doves Cry, only played differently...and is an ok song...

To suggest that Beautiful Night is a better long song than Crystal Ball is just plain insanity, which I cannot really respond to.

Witness Absoultely tramples 60% of the songs in Prince's entire valut, and is probably among his 10 best never released songs. So yes, I can understand somebody defending these 3 songs, but saying NO to the trade for the 3 I selected? I doubt hardly anybody would.

opinion... after opinion... stop talking like its facts.

i would keep hot thing, it, and beautiful night over crystal ball, witness, and old friends. and i like beautiful night more than crystal ball. its not insanity. i dont care for jughead much, and obviously not wedding feast. but thats my opinion. see?

Tough choice because there are no bad songs on the LP. I'll go with the song on Sign O The Times that defined the era: Housequake.

Mine too! cool I really love the music in that song -- especially towards the end! SOTT was always a very overrated album for me, but "IT" is one of the few standouts! Rather unorthodox view, I know!

eek eek mad Of course, you are totally entitled to your opinion, but this post makes me angry. The Cross is pure genius imo. Adore and Play in the Sunshine are as much of part of the fabric that is Sign o the Times as is the title track. Sorry...I strongly don't agree with you and had to get that off my chest! cool

^^I can't help thinking that The Cross is one of the poorest songs Prince ever made.

Just two chords (and nothing special about those 2 chords) which go from the boring-dreamy to a hard rock orgy which is totally out of place.

And as an atheist, the lyrics just make me wanna throw up.

Adore is an average soul ballad that MANY people other than Prince could've done (and even bettered).

Play in the sunshine is not terrible, but what saddens me is that in this era Prince had dozens of much better songs than that one.

Hmm, it's not the greatest song he ever did but it might have the best "rock" sound of any song he ever did. I would love to hear a whole "rock" album with a similar sound. Overall, I think it definitely adds a different flavour to the album.

Probably 99% of the music I listen to has crap lyrics, I learned to ignore lyrics a long time ago. wink

^So do I. Especially when it comes to Prince's lyrics (which mostly I find cringeworthy).

My main problem with The Cross (apart from how MUCH it bores me) is that I hate rock.

^Well, the album has such great songs that it's indeed difficult that it can be the best of them all, but I absolutely love it and that puts us both in the minority.

I think it's one of the best ballads Prince ever did (I don't care about lyrics). The drumming and the horns are outta this world.

But everybody seems to prefer the boring, standard, not-at-all-special 'Adore'.
