Listening to this tour recently, it struck me that Prince's vocals seemed quite rough - especially his falsetto - and not nearly as smooth and effortless as they became during the 1999 tour and subsequent tours. Was this deliberate to coincide with his rougher image or was he forcing his voice too much?

Well, it wasn't too much of a habit as we know his voice was plenty smoove on the previous albums.

I'm thinking this was just sort of his way of performing the show. At times, his vocal inflections during the LoveSexy tours and SOTT tours were a little off as well.

his style during the Dirty Mind tour was having arock and punk attitude. The whole sound is much more punk oriented than earlier. He also did the Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad... with much more attitude, and less disco-rnbish, even saying the word BITCH... Showing more of his bitter, puberty cocky style, rather than the vulnurable and naive style of his previous albums.
