Film Comment - I'll Do Anything James Brooks is interviewed in the newest issue of Film Comment. He says he wanted to put the original musical version of I"LL DO ANYTHING on the DVD as a bonus, but they could not get the rights to the Prince songs. He says they tried to call, but could not even get through to talk to Prince or any of his people. He says Prince had a contract that stipulated that they needed Prince's permission before they release something like that.

prince never agrees with anything. what you need to do is use reverse psychology and say you don't want it ever released, and then prince will release it
but this would probably be the worst movie ever if they released the musical version. it would make graffiti bridge seem like the godfather part 2

Surprise, surprise. | |

Indeed, no bad thing at all. The outtakes are awful, painfully so.

You would think that since the movie was conceived (and filmed) as a musical that he wrote the songs for, the contracts would already be in place for such a release.
Of course we didn't have DVD bonus features back then, so...

the movie was pre dvd era, and there was usually a long delay between cinema and vhs release. a number of films took ages to come out on dvd as the rights related to cinematic releases and not home video (ie grease and saturday nite fever). as the songs weren't in the final movie the contractual terms probably didn't apply for the songs

Was Prince embaressed? Wait how could someone as powerful as James Brooks not get into communication with Prince? My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Those songs were awful. I'd keep them under lock and key too.

the first batch of songs to surface from these sessions were actually pretty sweet.
iirc:
the rest of my life make believe i'll do anything don't talk 2 strangers there is lonely be my mirror my little pill empty room
most of them have been released by now anyway, but i've always wanted to have real good quality versions of "I'll Do Anything" and "Make Believe" since those are songs that i really like a lot. shame they weren't on the "Old Friends 4 Sale" album either. they would have fit there. Guess Prince just gave warners the bare minimum of what he could get away with.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Prince's versions of those songs are indeed quite sweet. But the versions sung by Nick Nolte, Tracey Ullman etc, (which were intended for the original version of the movie?) which can be found on the 30Yrs Of Unreleased Funk boot are quite horrific.

I thought the musical version didn't test well. That's why it became a regular film instead and the songs got locked up in the Vault. They probably figure in getting Prince to consent it would make the DVD a collectors item to fans and increase the sales. I did like some of the songs from it. very catchy tunes. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

If you've heard the film versions..... well, the only way they could make it worthwhile for Prince fans to buy is to add a bonus CD of HIS versions
The film versions are truly awful.

I said collect. Didn't mention a damn thing about watching it. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
