face down lyrics forgive my ignorance but I wasn't too much into Prince's music during the 90s. Didn't care for it too much... but I really like the song Face Down
was wondering the "story" if any behind the song... was in written in reference to anything known? | |

It's mostly about his battle with Warner Brothers.

Warner wanted him to continue making mainstream hits, while he wanted to be more of a creative artist with lascivious lyrics and experimental styles which may not get much airplay.
So while Warner thought Prince's decision would result in virtually no moneymaking songs and ultimately kill his career, Prince is saying he doesn't care about the money and he'll continue to put out the kind of music that he wants to put out. Face Down happens to be one of my all-time favorite Prince songs; let alone probably my favorite track on Emancipation.  ACRYLIC

It ironically refers to the often bandied idea that Prince's catalogue would be vastly more valuable if he died. It references the myth that Elvis' death was faked by record execs to increase sales.

On Emancipation ..... Unfortunately, he ended up being more of a prude than WB ever could want him to, his musical styles just copy what's out there (but gets much less airplay, if any) and he finally became more interested in money than in anything else.
