May i ask: Do you play an instrument Sir? Do you knwo what a muscial scale is??

If so then go ahead and play the melody of the QoU on your favourite isntrument and after that go ahead to play the melody of "Las Vegas Tango".

And now tell me please, how many notes do differ in your oppinion???

sounds like the same pace, similar key, same structure of verses, but the melody (number and order of notes) seems different. I think a lot of slow songs might have this sound.

It would be easy enough to write out the notes of each song... I don't have time right now!

Do you? lol

The melodic motif is different and so are the modulations. If Prince really intended to rip off the melody from this composition then he must have heard it horribly wrong.

Just try to play "The Question of U" over the clips yourself and it should be obvious they don't have any similarities except for the idea.

Im with Graycap on this one...

Thats a far far stretch to say they are the same melody and yes I am a musician and good try but NO.

The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Remember there is only one destination and that place is U

They sound sort of nice when played one after another though!

If it's originally by Gil Evans then I wouldn't be surprised if Prince got the overall idea for "The Question of U" from this composition. That's the type of stuff he was apparently into by the time he wrote "The Question of U".

how about when he wrote Under The Cherry Moon, since that's where the melody of The Question Of U comes from?

The Question of U was recorded in 1985 as well, though.

Edit: In fact, about a month after UTCM was recorded. cool

Cuz the song was written before Prince became famous, for one.

Interesting! I hear it clearly. Similar, though not exactly the same. wouldn't win a case in court.

I'm not sure, though, that Prince even knew of this song, there is something very simple about both themes, something basic. So it might be pure coincidence.

"The Question of U" is more a complete rip-off of his own "Under the Cherry Moon".

Search your feelings, you know this to be true.

Or whistle the two tunes...

nod I think I second this emotion... Close enough to ask the question just based on those similiarities, I guess. Not sure about the sound being common to slow songs, but I hear elements that are found in other (non-Prince) songs from the 70s.

At any rate cool track, thanks!

They would blend perfectly into each other.

In music industry they do this all the time -steal from each other.

Prince wrote like 1000 songs if not more,so in that fast pace and quantity of course you have to steal some1's music sometimes. He re-designed them well.

Correct. Not the melody notes nor the backing chords are the same.

Sometimes I wonder if people listen to music with their ears or with their arses.

So, does this mean that you actually play an instrument and have some knowledge about music theory.

You can't! Otherwise you wouldn't be saying they sound alike.

Hmm, I don't think "Under The Cherry Moon" and "The Question Of U" are that similar either. If you play the melody yourself you should realize they're quite different. "Under The Cherry Moon" is quite chromatic, it sounds almost like old circus / funfair music when played faster. "The Question Of U", on the other hand, stays within its key. It's far more straightforward.

I think a lot of novice musicians hear things within a limited range of notes. I remember when I started out and tried to pick up by ear the bass line from "Chameleon" by Herbie Hancock - I thought it would fit within half-an octave, whereas it actually spans over 1½ octaves! Same thing seems to be happening here - "The Question Of U" has a melody that covers an octave and even more than that when it gets variated during the "verse" played on the guitar. Whereas there are fewer notes on "Las Vegas Tango". Some people just don't hear the range and the proper intervals (granted, there are people with better ears than mine in this respect as well).

There's also the fact that the short melodic motif on "Las Vegas Tango" is transposed when the underlying chord changes, which doesn't happen with "The Question Of U" at all. So, calling them "identical" is clearly false.

I just wanted to point that by what you said and how you said it you showed you are a musical ignorant and very proud of it.

And that your education leaves a lot to be desired, that's all.
