Two buddies wanted me to make them a Prince CD

Actually, they seen the ?uestLove list in Rolling Stone, and asked me if I would replicate it for them.

Then, they were curious as to my favorite songs....

Sorry, 1 CD wasn't enough....here is my list and comments: These CD's could change from day to day.

I provided them the lyrics as well. Your thoughts?

CD 1

1. Gett Off Housestyle - This is an extension of the hit song, Get Off. I love the funkyness of this mix. It gets very jazzy at times also. The video is very cool too, should u stumble upon it.

2. Chaos and Disorder - This is my fav song off of the same titled CD. Has a cool rock edge.

3. Here - Great lyrics on a newer CD, MPLSound. I'm in love with the melody. Prince should own a patent on love songs.

4. Letitgo - This song came off of an album where all of the songs were one word titles, hence the spelling. A headbobber for sure. He tells about how he used to be uptight, but has learned to Letitgo.

5. Private Joy - I've always thought this was a way underrated song. It gets lost in the monster hits of Controversy. "If anybody asks you, you belong to Prince"

6. I Can't Love U Anymore - This is an unreleased song. I love the emotion in his voice and the simplicity of the song...Just Prince and his piano.

7. Willing and Able - Gospel/Blues tinted song which always makes me snap my fingers. I implore you to find this video on youtube. It's a slightly different version of the song, but you can see Prince gets lost in the music and dances like no one is watching.

8. The Holy River - Prince has always been filled with the Holy Spirit. I love that this song tells a story about how he finds Jesus (called him by name, this must have been before Jehovah).

9. Cherry, Cherry - Prince telling a story...always makes a great song. This song is off of the Exodus CD. He doesn't sing this, but he's in the background.

10. I Wish U Heaven (Parts 1, 2 & 3) - Prince at his funkiest. "Take this beat, I don't mind...got plenty others, and they so fine...." This is the extended version of the song on the Lovesexy CD.

11. Violet The Organgrinder - This is another extension of Gett Off. Prince reworked this into a crazy, funky, sex filled song. The video is as intense as the song. Love the lyrics also. "I can deal with a sucker if he's in your mouth, but I can't deal with insincere"

12. Don't Talk 2 Strangers - He gave this song to Chaka Khan. This is his version taken from the Girl 6 soundtrack. Another song about God. Love the simplicity of this song.

13. When Eye Lay My Hands On U - Love the rock vibe of this song. The distorted guitar is almost unlistenable at times. Only Prince could make that sound good. "I'll touch u in the softest manner, like Europa in the hands of Santana"

CD 2

1. Days of Wild - Live in Montreal (with many studio overdubs). He gave us this single version at Paisley Park in MPLS. All versions of this classic are killer. The original has plenty of swearing. "I tear shit up ya'll, that's my style, these are the days of wild"

2. Data Bank - Prince is a funny dude....This song captures it very well. "I might b small....but so is dynamite". haha. The ending where he's trying to direct the band and they do their own thing is hilarious. This is a much better version than the officially released song by The Time.

3. And God Created Woman - God, Women and biblical references...Prince was inspired. "They can have u, but I'll have your love in the end" Hopeless romantics eat this for breakfast.

4. A Case of U - Beautifully sung song written by Joni Mitchell. This is Prince and the piano at his best. This comes off of a not-so-widely circulated CD...One Nite Alone (basically a Prince/piano CD)

5. All Day All Night - This song was officially released by Jill Jones (the blonde waitress in Purple Rain who takes Appollonia's phone number) Great funky rhythm and lyrics. "Oh, r these my lips, or r they petals from some crazy flower?" "Oh, r these my hips, if they r then they're some kinda powerful"

6. Do U Lie? - Never has Prince had a better vocal on a song. This song comes off of the Parade CD, which was the soundtrack for the Under The Cherry Moon movie, which was set in France. This song captures a mood.

7. The One U Wanna C - Midtempo rockers are my favorite Prince songs (When You Were Mine, I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man etc). This song comes off of the Planet Earth CD and is an instant classic in my eyes. That's Wendy and Lisa (from the long ago broken up Revolution days) singing the "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah's"

8. Laydown - OH NO HE DIDN'T call himself the Purple Yoda! The story is that ?uestLove, DeAngelo and some friends were sitting around discussing musical acts/heroes. They classified Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince as musical Yoda's, the highest class. Obviously, word got back to Prince. This is off of the 20ten CD, released last year in Europe only. Word around the Prince community is that this may be released as an extended version. The ending does come abruptly, so my fingers are crossed....Funky Prince is always good.

9. I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore - Heartbroken Prince is always good. Heartfelt delivery and beautiful piano. This is off of the Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic CD. Reported written about Mayte Garcia around the time of their divorce.

10. Love - Great bouncy song from the 3121 CD. Lots of people think this was written about his fans. "Stop giving me your wishlist"....I love the melody on this one...."Like a bird flying over the hilltops, Love is like the sky, you know, it never stops. From the abundance of the heart, the mouths speaks...love is whatever, whatever, you want it to be"

11. Can't Stop This Feeling I Got - This one is taken from the EXCELLENT bootleg, Box 'O Chocolates. It's much better than the officially released version on Graffiti Bridge. Love the energy of this song.

12. A Place in Heaven - This is the song that would have followed Movie Star (if they were ever released)...I love the vision that this describes. Heaven has 3 year old leaders Let's not be lazy, there's no roomservice, it's all up to me and you.

13. Dance 4 Me - Fairly recent song (MPLSound CD) - No one does dance songs better than Prince. It makes me laugh that he's all religious and quit swearing and is a Jehovah's Witness, but when you hear this song, you just know that some strippers of the future are queuing this as their song....LOL.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

You're going to turn those guys away from Prince.

Burn them Purple Rain and 1999 instead.

i hoonestly think Purple rain and/or the hits/b sides are the best introduction to Prince. I like alot of the songs you listed but i am not sure if they will appeal to a newbie.

You could try and make a cd with 70 percent or so hits and another 30 percent of great songs that appeal to hardcore fans.

No no no don't just give them one album, an overview is best. But you could definitely swap The One U Wanna C for I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man because 1. you have no SOTT songs on there at all and that's a sin and 2. ICNTTPOYM is more catchy and leaves a stronger message in my book.

time flies.

Jehovah's Witnesses believe in Jesus as the son of God, they just disagree on how he was put to death.

The Holy River also tells the story of how Prince decided to marry Mayte.

Oh, thanks! Found it, but it took a while because it was titled I Can't ove U Anymore. Besides I have it on a 'I'll do anything cast recording'. It even has Nick Nolte singing...!?

Yeah, they all ended up recording all the songs Prince wrote, but they canned it when they changed the direction of the film (from a musical to I guess a, uh, dramedy).

His version originally surfaced about 10 years ago, well after the rest of it already had. It's not the best quality - almost sounds like it was recorded from a microphone held up to a speaker. It's pretty, though. Definitely one of his saddest ballads, IMO!

I agree with your assessment of the two songs. I do love them both (leaning towards ICNTTPOYM more), however, there were two deciding factors for me:

1. I wanted to stay away from most "hits", as I am sure they have heard them.

2. The quality (low volume comparatively) of SOTT is the real sin.

You guys seem to be missing the point of the project:

This is not an introduction to Prince for these guys...they know his hits and familiar with some of his other work.

As Prince fanatics, you guys would agree (??) that both CD's are KILLER studio music. Well, at least I do, which is what they asked for.

I'm not trying to convert anyone....those days are behind me. I'm simply sharing my favs.

I believe the story is the Prince version was recorded on a cassette recorder in a hotel in Australia (or Paris?), and possibly never re-made in the studio, which is why the quality is so poor compared to the rest of them.

If they already know the hits, then i'll pick these songs:

Endorphinmachine

17 Days

Pink Cashmere

Love

Black Sweat

All Day All Night

When Eye Lay My Hands On You

Blue Light

Soul Sanctuary

Uptown

I Could Never Take the Place Of Your Man

Love 2 the 9's

Girls And Boys

I think the above songs will have some sort of appeal even to the more casual and/or new fans

Endorphinmachine shows off Prince's high enery rock side. Girls and Boys is hard funk with wonderful saxophone by eric leeds. ICNTTPOYM is evidence of his amazing guitar work, Soul Sanctuary is a fantastic ballad with a carrabien touch, Uptown is his greatest political song, Blue Light shows off the more regaee side. Pink Cashmere is definately up there with his ballads and the rest of the songs are very catchy and appealing.

I would remove:

Get Off.. kinda dated

Here... I like Here, but I would think it's boring for a casual listener

Willing & Able... Find a live version.

Cherry Cherry... random for a casual listener

Violet The Organ Grinder... kinda dated

The only reason imo to keep The Holy River on there is for the guitar solo @ the end...

Otherwise a great set of songs.

His live version of Willing & Able is much better than the album version if you can find it.

Just my 2 cents

What a strange list...you have quit a few pretty medicore songs on it. I understand they are your favourites, but you also want them to listen to the whole cd, don't you?

I mean, 10 minutes of i wish you heaven?

Cherry, cherry? Letitgo?

As much as i love these songs, i can imagine somebody else having a hard time really enjoying these songs.
