Prince almost took the Act II tour to Istanbul/Turkey in 1993, but the show got canceled shortly before it was supposed to take place.

German payTV station Premiere pretended that the concert had just begun, but they couldn´t broadcast it due to contractual problems and so they broadcast a recording of the "Beautiful Experience" movie instead. wink

Many of us hardcore fans want Prince to play more obscure songs or newer material but many casual fans left some of the Gold Experience/Ultimate Live Experience shows in early 1995 quite early and very disappointed due to the fact that Prince would only play either new material or very obscure songs.

sad

I loved that era and those shows though. wink

Bits and pieces in Janet Jackson´s song "You Can Be Mine" off of her "Control" album are reminiscent of the instrumental version of Prince´s song "Possessed", which can be heard in the movie Purple Rain ( the main melody...when Morris and Apollonia are having a drink at First Avenue).

Back in the days before there were lawsuits because of samples, Grandmaster Melle Mel and Vansilk shamelessly sampled the "Oh yeah!" part of Sign of the Times and the "What ´s the matter with your world?" phrase from Pop Life in their song "What´s the matter with your world?" .

You can find it on one of the Police Academy soundtracks.

Decent song, by the way. And a nice video...a bit cheesy in hindsight, but nice.

I don't know if it counts as a tidbit, but it annoys the hell out of me in the film Krush Groove when Shelia E is doing Love Bizarre and that white guy in her band is obviously lip-synching the part that Prince obviously sang.

First time around, I didn't notice, second time, Prince's scream got my attention.

Steph

What I find much more irritating is that Steph sang Prince´s part of Erotic City during some shows of the Purple Rain tour.

I can live with that lipsynching in Krushgroove but to sing one of Prince´s trademark songs live on stage with Sheila during the Purple Rain heyday is difficult to stomach in hindsight. I bet he´s a nice person and talented musician but Erotic City without Prince? Naaaaahhhh....

The German 45 rpm vinyl single of Peach has "My Name is Prince" as its b-side, and the cover says "from the album Love Symbol", even though the prince album was never officially called the "Love Symbol" album.

Seeing this misleading title printed on a cover makes it at least semi-official, in my opinion.

If I am not wrong, the album is officially cataloged as Love Symbol and the only time its referred to the symbol is in print or on promo crap (and obviously the albums themselves).

The beginning of Orgasm has the same guitar part as the ending to "Private Joy"

Come is basically 18 & Over, minus the rapping

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Oh, really? That´s news to me because I remember we had a BIG and heated discussion here some time ago because some people wouldn´t believe me, and then someone posted a pic of that single cover but they said it still doesn´t make the Love Symbol title more legit or more official because that´s just a mistake on behalf of someone at WB.

I think it´s fair to say that it´s up to Prince to decide what the real title is but then again, if WB calls it the "Love Symbol" album, then that´s as close as you can get in terms of official title, right?

I never knew that it is indeed catalogued under that title.

It was considered a different version/part/remix of Come at some point, if I recall correctly.

By the way, have you ever heard the live rendition he gave at the Paradiso in March 1995 in Amsterdam? I was there and I still remember that moment ( okay, I have it on CD lol ) ...it was such an amazing performance of a rather mediocre song. Really, really fantastic what he did with that song...great guitar playing and very soulful organ playing by Morris.

Not wanting to sound too "anal" here lol , but judgment is actually not what was incorrect because both "judgment" and "judgement" are correct....but on the cover it says "jugdment".

Or maybe I just misunderstood you and you were in fact referring to "jugdment", sorry.

I don´t know about them smoking rocks...some of them are orgers that I really have a lot of respect for in terms of Prince-knowledge ( I don´t want to say any names but they were definitely some of the more "encylopedic" orgers, for lack of better words. You probably know who I mean).

But thanks for the links.

Well, now that you mention it, I remember it was summer when I went to see the Lüneburg show, and the Beautiful Experience was recorded in February, if I recall correctly...which means that your doubts are justified, of course.

Now that I think about it, I remember it was not that Beautiful Experience movie that they showed instead of the concert, but the documentary that contains snippets from the legendary August 1983 show at First Avenue, I think it´s a BBC documentary.

They showed the Beautiful Experience much later, you are right about that. I got it mixed up because both, the documentary and the movie, were broadcast on Premiere.

Sorry for getting that mixed up,it´s been a long time.

But yes, they did really pretend that the concert was taking place in Istanbul and that Prince had denied the broadcasting rights all of a sudden, so that´s why they showed the BBC documentary instead...which, of course, was not true since the concert didn´t really happen.

I once met and talked with some people in Prince´s camp about this canceled show. They definitely had plans for a show there but somehow the show got canceled.

2) Some newer fans might not know about the NPG All Stars. Levi Seacer Jr took over the role of President at NPG Records when he left the NPG touring/recording lineup. During this tenure, it was planned that Prince would undertake an NPG All Stars tour. This tour, in essence, would be similar to what ended up as the Newpower Soul Festival (not really much of a festival in the end, rather just 3 acts touring together). The idea never actually got off the ground, but it was presumed that the roster would include acts like George Clinton, Carmen Electra, The NPG, Madhouse, Mavis Staples, MPLS... Essentially, if you saw it on the 1800 New Funk album, it was intended to be on the NPG All Stars tour. Shortly after, this and all projects at the time involving Levi were canned when he was ousted from the camp for (allegedly) fucking one of Prince's girlfriends (Carmen Electra). As Miko learned previously, it ain't cool to fuck with Prince's women.

I'm defintely not a new fan, and I've never heard this before. Do you have a source? (Not doubting you, just wondering).

And are you sure Levi got fired? My understanding was that he and Karen Lee (Levi's girlfriend and Prince's publicist) packed up their stuff and quit while Prince was in Europe.

I'm pretty sure the 1988 "The Max" is a completely different song. And what's your source on "Guitar"? Which version was recorded in 2003? The stripped-down one he released on 3121, or the full band version on Planet Earth?

Really?

Sorry should have been a little more elaborate in my first post. But yes. If you'll notice almost the whole last minute of the single version from after Prince sings "Everybody..." all the way to the fadeout is not included on the 12". In fact the single version is the only version that includes the "We're against hungry children..." hook twice. It's there only once on the 12" version! I have mixed feelings about this because I love the 12" version but I also love the second hook on the single version. It sounds like Lisa singing the shit out of "Our record stands tall you know..." and there's also a little guitar riff close to the fadeout not included on the 12" version. music

1) The NPG All Stars tour info first surfaced on AMP from T. Take it as you will. Carmen actually was fucking Tony M, my bad. That is the second time I've conflated those two. (I get them confused only because of the lawsuit they slapped P with.)

2) As far as "The Max" in 1988 being a different song, I'm not sure. I don't recall the source, but I remember this being the reason the bars from "Rave Un2" show up in it. Would have to see if Boris remembers anything about this track.

The stripped down version being the first version he demoed on the website and the released version being the album version. (This may have been 2004.)

Edit: Here we go-

http://groups.google.com/...0c007f4944

Yes, alot of input that made no difference in anything.. HE STILL had
Prince watching over him though.. See, Levi was Prince's Kirky J back
then.. Levi wanted a record label so Prince would always hang the NPG
records carrot over his head without really giving it to him..
Finally one day Prince gave in and told Levi he could in fact run the
label AND he could run it however he wanted... But, that was a lie to
get what Prince wanted from Levi so after a while of Levi's ideas
getting squashed (including the NPG All Stars tour) he got fed up...,
When Prince went to Germany to do the MTV Euro Awards, he cleaned his
desk out.. Prince came back to no record label and that was the end
of NPG! Until this new thing he is trying to pull over where HE is
the main man at the label.... Or in fact, he is THE ONLY man at the
label! smile

Can't find additional info about "The Max" there though.

Prince can´t read notes but this doesn´t seem to matter in the movie Purple Rain, where he asks his father whether he´s got note sheets of his music, which he denies. Later, the Kid finds the sheets in the basement and is able to read them and play his father´s tunes.

This thread worked out much better than ever expected. Thanks for all the info guys, I didn't know at least 50% of what was posted here.

On Prince's interview on American Bandstand he confirmed he had been offered 4 record deals at the age of 15, but he turned them all down because the record companies wouldn't let him produce his own work.

You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

I've heard that it was taken from a boxing sample, but no one seems to be able to point to a specific sound effects library or LP. I've found one "crowd noise" sfx that sounds like a match, but I'm not certain.

I remember long discussions trying to figure out both what this was and where the damn sample is from because as I recall NO ONE over the years has been able to figure that out. (Remember the recent discovery of the "Bizarre!" sample, lol.)

Prince himself referenced the sample in the AOL chat question and answer thing which was also reposted recently, but he didn't actually give a real answer.

The boxing match theory has been the one that's stuck (after it was declared to categorically NOT be the Rolling Stones concert), but I don't think it's ever actually gone far beyond a theory.

I think this was answered somewhere, I mean the exact same riot-like sound effect is used in the 1982 movie "Alone in the Dark" for a scene where there is looting going on. I think it's the same sound effects library that all the fx for the album 1999 come from as well.

That's what wikis should be used for... sad

The intro to "I No" is "Passing Clouds" by Roger Limb, released on the "Out of This World" sound effects LP, originally released in 1976, and re-released on CD as "Essential Science Fiction Sound Effects, Vol. 2" in 1991 (which I have). I think I quickly parsed the 66 tracks on that compilation once and "Passing Cloud" is probably the only thing Prince used from it.

Ok, I found the thread:

http://prince.org/msg/7/266985

The is old old sampling set that these sounds came from.
I belive it's called "Sounds of Hollywood" or something like that.

Also:

Actually I think it's called "Sound effects of Hollywood"

But I can't find anything about "Sound effects of Hollywood", it that's indeed the correct title.

I was just saying that the sample used in "I No" and the samples used in "Delirious", "Lady Cab Driver", and "Pop Life" don't come from the same sound effect compilation. And, also, that we shouldn't need to search prince.org using Google to find all those pieces of information.
