Thank U all for posting and sharing. I grew up with 45 Singles in my hand. Music has been my bloodline since I came out of my mothers womb.
In the beginiing it was the Jackson 5 and MJ, then came Prince. I didn't know who he was, I just heard "Soft & Wet" on the radio and was like DAMN!! Who is that?? "He said what?" and it was FUNKY! I didn't start idolizing this artist until I read the inside sleeve of For You and found that he played and sang EVERYTHING! I loved Stevie, but Stevie's credits never read like this.
I didn't think about that, but you're right about how fortunate we were musically to grow up with all these geniuses.

I'm really enjoying reading these posts. Like many of you, I've been a fan since (almost) the beginning. I can still remember a friend's mom taking a bunch of us to see Purple Rain in the theaters at age 12 (and I've been hooked on Prince ever since). I feel like Prince's music has been a part of every stage and every critical juncture of my life. Seeing him in New York on the 29th I was rejuvenated by the joy I felt emanating from him on stage. I feel blessed to have been a part of the Prince experience and to have had him as one of the defining influences in my life.

Interesting, honest post. You shouldn't try and make your son "get it". You know it doesn't work like that. You either get it or you don't. Also, some first don't get it, but later do. Just let him know the music is there, he will go and discover it on its own one day.

I was one of the many that didn't 'get it' until 1996 ... LoL My son loves MJ ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

My (12yr) son knows I'm a huge fan. He likes Kiss and Housequake. But, he's not ready for the entire experience. He's likes The Time also. I'm saving all my video clips and core 80's material for when he's a little older. He can't get past the "Glam" just yet to appreciate the musicianship. I play a lot of the songs in the car, just to get his ears interested first. I don't tell him who it is....

I'm with you Bulldog! I feel so very fortunate to have grown up with Prince. I liked his earlier music before I knew who he really was, but once Purple Rain came out (I was only 12), I was in love! I also really only like his early music. [Edited 1/28/11 7:31am]

I am one of the fans who not only grew up with Prince, but I don't really know life without Prince being around. I've told this story many times here on the org but I never get tired of sharing it. I discovered who Prince was when I was 4 years old in 1983. I saw the "Little Red Corvette" video and was confused by him. I'll never forget this, I asked my mom who the "weirdo in the high heeled boots" was. And I remember she said "oh that's Prince!" like it was nothing! I was like towards it and kept on watching the video show that was on but then they played "1999" later on the program and I really liked that song. I knew then that it wasn't like anything that was out at the time but it didn't grab me super hard either and I was more into Michael Jackson.
The next year, I saw the video to "When Doves Cry" at my Great Grandparents house and my thoughts were, "he got a new song out already?" (It was Dec 1983 when I saw LRC and 1999) and "wow, I LIKE this song!" MTV played the hell out of that song and the more I heard it, the more I liked it and I became a fan at 5. I wanted Mom to get the Purple Rain album for me and I wanted to see the movie but it was rated R. I asked mom if we could see the movie and she laughed at me as said "Hell No" so I knew asking for the PR album was out of the question. 2 years later, at age 7, Mom brought me Parade because I loved "Kiss" and I liked the album and as a result I got each new Prince album that came along by the time I was 10, I had all Prince's albums from PR to the Batman soundtrack that was out at the time. I didn't become a die-hard fan until I was 12. I was more into Michael Jackson when I was a kid and when Diamonds and Pearls and Dangerous came out around the same time, I was more excited about D&P than Dangerous. That's when I knew Prince was my #1. I can't believe that was 20 years ago now.
I am still just as big a fan of Prince at 31 going on 32 as I was at 5, 12, 19, 24 etc... I love seeing his evolution and seeing where his music and the man himself is going. The change of band members, seeing if he has a new style of clothes, hairstyles and even women have made the ride so much fun. And I can't just love one era of his. I can't be a 1978-1988 or 1995 or whatever end point fan(and I'm not knocking anyone who falls into this category), I'm a fan of EVERYTHING. When it comes to me and Prince, it's all or nothing. Good, bad, indifferent, it's a roller coaster that I still enjoy riding on and now that I have friends that are like minded as I am, it makes the experience that much more satisfying. These shows in MSG and the IZOD Center have been everything I've ever wanted and everything I love about Prince. It's all about the party and it's a party with great friends, a great host and incredible music which has been the soundtrack of my life. I'm so thankful to be a Prince fan and if I become the only Prince fan on earth then I'll be one happy, funky, purple dude until the day that I die! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Beautiful and descriptive story PurpleCam Thank you so much for sharing. And also for not glossing over important descriptive details. I personally love how the way yours and some of the other narratives paint pictures in my mind so we inexperineced purpleheads can get a visual of how things went down in ur lives and how Prince affected it Thank you so much! I share some of the same experiences as some of you who have been there since the beginning. I have followed Prince's career since the very beginning also. I remember hearing Soft & Wet on the radio and I loved it and wondered what woman sang that song, I was 12 at the time.
One day I was at the playground with my friends, looking at the latest Right On! magazine and reading the articles. We turned the page and saw this gorgeous guy with a perfectly round afro. OMG!! I almost fell backwards off the swing! The article said his name was Prince and his song was Soft & Wet. I started screaming, he was SOOO FINE!! I soon realized that it was him that made the song I loved hearing on the radio. I was hooked ever since. To this day, that is one of my favorite pictures of him.
I am fortunate to grow up in the 70's with so many great musicians. My father was a musician (guitarist) and my mother sang with his band, so I grew up with a variety of music everyday. I remember the excitement of going to the record store, buying a Prince album and learning the words to every song or reading every word on the album cover.
I've stood in long lines for front row Prince tickets, attended many concerts and aftershows, purchased every album, cds, and dvds. It has been amazing following his career from the beginning until now. Everyone who knows me, knows that he is my favorite musician. He has a song to fit every mood you are in. It is a family affair, my father loved him as a musician, my mother also. But the greatest joy is to see my children love and appreciate his music as much as I do.

You guys who grew up with Prince and were there to experience him from the beginning are so lucky!!! It sucks that most of my fave artists are older acts because I never got to see experience them from the beginning.
And no matter how many clips on youtube I watch or dvd's I own or how many older newspaper articles I read, it will never compare to being there to experience the real thing as it was happening.
I'm really jealous of all those who got to see Prince from the beginning and watch him evolve as an artist over the years. [Edited 1/28/11 15:43pm] "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ

Thanks to all for sharing your stories....it put a smile on my face.

I graduated high school in 1985 and college in 1989... Being a teen in the 80s was great!
Looking back, I wish I was a little older to experience some things, but I was still exposed to the music, fashion and pop culture.
Like I said, I was very aware of Prince, just not into him until later.... "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Growing up in the eighties,MJ was that entertainer that everyone in 1983 wanted to emulate, but I at that time was a young teen venturing into writing music and playing instruments and performing in local talent showcases, and came across Prince/The Time and Vanity Six in 1981..What Prince was doing at the time, many said wouldn't last and that he wouldn't have longevity...Nothing against MJ,who is still a great inspiriration to me,but Prince just took it all to another level..Look back from teh first project and even being booed opening up for the Rolling Stones,I remeber Mick Jagger in an interview at one the those concerts stating that he was ashamed that their fanbase booed Prince and that he was going on to do big things in his career and Mick even stated that Prince may be just as big as them..Wow,what a difference 30 years has made in Prince's career!
Looking back in the eighties,Prince pushed things like Maxi singles(Remixes),b-sides,pseudo production and writing credits, afterparty mini-concerts,album releases almost every year in the eighties, and beautiful women in music, not only was he the most versatile, but had a beauty that always stood out!! Innovator, and No disrespect to James Brown, who also was one of my inspiration, but Prince has and still is the hardest working artist in show business..No disrespect to Ray Charles,Frank Zappa and Todd Rundgren, who i believe before Prince, were the most versatile for their eras, but Prince to me is the most versatile artist of our times...He is the true ARTIST,no matter the legal mumble jumble,Prince was blessed to always come through on top!!! God Be with him...
