This One Is For Prince Tonight--Livesexy Dortmund '88! Can't be at the Prince concert at the MSG tonight, but I just got a copy of one of Prince's greatest live concert performances (if not THE greatest) which is the LiveSexy audio recording in Dortmund, Germany in 1988. So, I'm playing that instead. What a terrific audio recording of the LoveSexy tour! I'm loving every moment of this live recording! 5 stars out of 5! You really think this is a great show to listen to? I actually just happened to listen to it last week, since I came across a better audio version of it. This really isn't that great a show to me, from a music standpoint, without the visuals. Chopped-up medleys and schizophrenia all over the place. It's much more palatable when you're watching, because this was a very visual show and there was a lot going on on-stage. The music by itself, while fun and containing some decent performances, just kind of leaves me completely unsatisfied with almost every song played.

I remember buying this the week it was released on VHS. The audio versions are good, but there are other Lovesexy shows out there in amazing soundboard quality that are better imo. Some of the audience recordings are really good too. But, i have to agree with errant on this, in that the Lovesexy tour was very visual and the audio recordings just feel a bit dull to me. The shows seemed to be very structured, with little or no room for improvisation or any surprises. Listening to recordings of the shows at times resembles a jukebox in the hands of a 5 year old with his finger on the skip button. I think that the circulating aftershows from the Lovesexy tour are a much more enjoyable experience, some very nice jamming took place at some of them.
All said though, the Dortmund recording is a nice thing to have, and indeed it features one of my favourite versions of Purple Rain.

^I'm afraid I agree, partly.
Whilst we can't deny it a great performance musically, I think the fact that most of us really enjoyed this in superb quality (for the time) as early as 88 makes it harder to be enjoyed detached from the images.
Out of the 3 DVD versions I have, the best without a doubt is Excalibur's 2-disc set. Even though Fullasoul's 'Lovesexy Uncut' is also a must have because of being unedited.
