Remember that prior to CDs and bit-for-bit copies, these outtakes were taken off of analog cassette tapes of various generational degrees back in the day, so playback on a song this long could be off quite a bit depending on the deck's calibration and the stretching of the actual source tape. That and fade out variations are why so many boots have the same songs with different timings.

The Work It 2.0 track from CD 7 is 30:37 and sounds fantastic.

That's the one I have!! cool

I posted this on another recent thread, but I still would love to know why the live version of I Would Die 4 U sounds different from the album version, which is supposedly a live version as well.

I made it through this thing once. At the gym. Big cardio workout. By the end, between my exhaustion and the music, I felt like I was in a nightmare.

The 30+min IWD4U is too long, 10mins, yes, 15mins, eh......., but when it gets past 15mins i'm bored.

The 12inch America is the same, though easier to digest than IWD4U.

Yeah, that's not what I was getting at. The synthesizer sounds totally buried, for one thing. And I guess maybe he could have just decided on using a different sound for it, or maybe he liked it better stripped down, but it seems odd to me.

The 12" (extended version) of IWD4U is a rehearsal for the 1985 Purple Rain Tour, the same arrangement as seen on the IWD4U/Baby I'm A Star from the Hits Video (also see youtube!)

Obviously the 12" was an edited version from the full length rehearsal which was 30mins long (at least - I've heard there is a 45min version aswell!!!!!?)

The album version would of been recorded in 1983 so the sound would be different, because he wanted to change it around by the time he went on tour with it. adding Sheila and Eddie M into the mix gave him a whole new sound to play with.

Accent!

I have the 32:34 and the 30:41 smile

I love the building percussion and all the instruments steadily climaxing together. It's genius at it's best when it comes to this extended song.

Also listened to it at workout and it keeps u going. Also on the bus on the way to skool, made me realize how long those rides actually are...

And are u guys talking about the 21:39 cut of America??

[Edited 1/16/11 6:34am]

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Yep, that's true, but what sounds totally different to me is the keyboard and synth and the echo on his vocals. And the extended live version is slower than the album version.

The America 12" was officially released on a French Warner Bros imprint CD called Black Archives Minneapolis Funk, but that particular track was vinyl-sourced.

Forgive my density, but if I'm understanding you correctly, you're just curious as to why he'd switch the arrangement? Well, it is Prince after all.

Not tryna clown, but I think it's really just as simple as that. Different performances, different arrangements.

I believe it's out of print and could only be found in France: http://www.amazon.fr/Minn...amp;sr=8-1

Translated to English...

Product Description

Amazon.fr

Overall, each song in the collection "Black Archives" is essential to any fan of black music that does not possess the original albums from which they are extracted. Several parameters have guided the choice of the journalist Christopher Augros. The sake of completeness, the widest possible which does not rely solely on the single hard-funk, senso stricto could be written, but rather address the funky groove in all its forms, from George Benson Groover Washington Jr. through Cameo and Ol 'Dirty Bastard - shade! The telescoping authorized non-compliance of the chronology of the pieces collected in each volume. The obligation to dip into the catalog of the label that hosts this series, that is to say Warner. And finally, most importantly, the geographic location of groups that gives its title to each volume - up to three for the city of New York. As Memphis, Chicago, Philadelphia and Cleveland's history is deeply marked by Minneapolis funk. Here's proof with a flawless track-listing within the selection criteria listed above. - Hervé Comte

BLACK ARCHIVES / MINNEAPOLKIS FUNK WARNER MUSIC FRANCE 092748238-2 WE881

1. TEVIN CAMPBELL / Round And Round 4:54

2. THE TIME / Pandemonium 4:12

3. MORRIS DAY / Fish Net (Big Leg Mix) 7:15

4. SHEILA E / A Love Bizarre 12:18

5. BROWNMARK / Good Feeling 4:09

6. PRINCE / The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker 4:04

7. KARYN WHITE / Love That's Mine 5:5

8. MICHAEL JEFFRIES / Not Thru Being Wuth You 5:00

9. PRINCE / America (Extended version) 21:46

But the CD can be found free in lossless easy enough online.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.
