"Eye No" synth bassline

Has anyone else noticed the "Eye No" = "Thriller"' on the synth bass pattern, with a different timing? Did Prince do this on purpose when he reworked "The Ball"... to try to tap into a mainstream unconsciousness for his very non-commercially conceptual opening song?

Quincy has mentioned that several times. He said that they ran it by Rick and he didn't object.

Yeah, wasn't it in the liner notes to the last Thriller re-release?

Never made the connection between Eye No and Thriller though, I hear it now. biggrin

I believe it was. He also addressed it in his autobiography a few years ago.

wow, it makes about as much sense as using a major third instead of a minor, repeating the triad formation half as frequently, and popularising it five years after the event, with an offbeat kick instead of a straight four and completely different words and sentiment!

now the similarity is there in my head i have to say...

And yet still easily recognized by my DJ friend upon putting the needle down on the promo record before it's official release Spring of 1988. "Oh no Prince, why'd he have to use that old beat?"
