Could The Black Album/Lovesexy have worked as a double album? Releasing back to back double albums is a bit much, but SOTT is only 16 songs so let's say he drops 3-4 of them and makes it a single album. Could The Black Album and Lovesexy been a successful double album/tour project? -Could any of the songs on the black album been editied for radio and could have possibly been a hit? -Would dropping the SOTT songs for Black Album songs on the Lovesexy Tour and really emphasizing the struggle between light and dark make the tour any worse/better? -The cover would probably not be him naked on a flower, that in mind and overall, how much different would 1988 have been?

This is a flawed "what if" scenario, as it would have excluded songs from Sign O The Times. Therefore I must alert the moderators of this forum and recommend you be permanently banned. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

They are both EQ'd quite differently on the official released versions, Black Album is very mid range heavy.
But a double album would have been interesting. Especially if all the singles were supposed to be Lovesexy, but the b-sides were Black tracks.
Prince already did explore this kind of pairing, in concert with Black Album songs played in the first "Camille" half of the show, and then Lovesexy songs in the second.
And the I Wish U Heaven 12" had the b-side Scarlet Pussy which was in only Peach and Black design (am I remembering that right?), and credited to Camille.
That's how it could have worked! I think the only way it coulodl work as a packaged double album, was if the Lovesexy album art was intact, but the album opened into a double fold, and the black album was in a black sleeve with no credits... and smelled like banana cologne. The tour could have been Lovesexy arena shows and Black Album small clubs. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

no, they are completely opposite.

I think it would have been cool. It fit great with that Lovesexy tour.

No.

That's usually how Prince delivers it... like the "I wish U Heaven" record sides.
or "When 2 R In Love" followed by "Bob George" My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Well yea, it is flawed, but there's a lack of decent threads on here (has been for a while) and I was bored

not really. thematically, they might complement each other, I mean, if you had an interview at the time to read to put it together. but sonically, no. he drastically changed his sound with Lovesexy. there are hints of the denseness on The Black Album and its overdubs, but Lovesexy, as the first album recorded at Paisley Park, was the first of his "everything but the kitchen sink because I have the time and the toys to fiddle with it" albums. there's the good/evil thing, but it's tenuous connection at best, and the pre-PP and post-PP approaches to producing don't mix particularly well.

I think it would have worked perfectly.
The Black album as the dark evil side and Lovesexy the light, religious album to right the sins of the Black album.
As far as I'm concerned a great concept.
As far as the sound and styles of the records being different , that is true.. However, i still think as they're pretty much opposite ends of the scales, it still works as a light and dark concept. *

I still think the weakest album was released, while the strongest one was hidden in the Vault for nearly 8 years...

So where would you see 'When 2R In Love' - on the Black Album record or LoveSexy?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I totally agree.
It is because the concepts are so the opposite, that the sounds are too.
That's exactly what would make it such an interesting double album.

I first heard it on the Black Album, before Lovesexy was released. It sounded out of place on Lovesexy to me back then. There's no mention of "new power", or a higher spiritual quest, and the sound was more controlled and dense and uniform (like the Black Album) compared to all the other spastic, fast produced, chaotic tracks on Lovesexy. When 2 R in Love is totally out of place on the BA.
A honey sweet sugar song about two lovers bathing eachother and not fucking but only making love with words on an album that's all about fucking, dissing, violence, drugs, bitches and partying?
Totally wrong. | |

hmmm, they are most definitely fucking and licking pussy on When 2 R in Love, right after he finishes talking... read the lyrics:
So fierce U look 2night
AND THEN... the big asshole joke is to follow this with "Bob George"... get it? It's a punk ass move, on an album where his whole attitude was to be a degenerative punk ass. And the sound and musical style do not match Lovesexy. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

sorry I see your point, but I don't see it in the lyrics.
the song also starts with "2nite we make love with only words..." right?
The following "ssswwweeet dreamssss..."is intriguing tho' lol

"Tonight we make love with only words" is in Lovesexy, not When 2 R in Love. I think W2RIL is ALL about sex. I love it.

Would the album still be called Lovesexy or The Black Album instead? I don't think there are singles on Black Album, maybe Rockhard? Maybe if Rebirth Of The Flesh had replaced When 2 R In Love on The Black Album. As a double compared to Sign, I think it compares not so well and it would have been more closely compared if it had been released as a double. I think having an unreleased album added to his mystique at the time. It created another level of interest. [Edited 1/7/11 16:32pm]

I think it would definitely work!!!

it would have been a bold double album. Hot and cold, good and evil, right and wrong. W2RIL would have fit better on LoveSexy only. I would have replaced it on the BA with a Camille track.
It would have fit well with the tour as well. He wouldn't have had to change much about the tour because it was built as if both albums were released, so that would have been a great idea.

You are right, I was so confused. It's the line:
"I make love 2 U... 2morrow... sweet dreams... " and "Before we do anything, let me just talk 2 U "

Those lines are in the song "Lovesexy"!
whoops someone already spotted that. [Edited 1/7/11 20:07pm] My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

That's the point! | |

I think it could have worked, provided he made is clear that each album was a good and evil kind of thing with the album artwork and packaging.
Would have been cool if the album cover was 2 pictures of prince put together standing in the same pose in each - one as him dressed like he did as camille on the lovesexy tour and one of him in the polkadot suit & the whole cover could have been black & white themed. Thinking about it now I think doing both as a 2-cd set would have been really cool!
As for black album yealding any hits, i don't think any of them would have been hits really... possibly le grind, but overall i think if he released the black album it would have been a flop commercially but then again I wasn't around in those times so don't really know what was going on with trends in the radio so who knows!

I,ve allways thought this should have been the case ,it should have been called something like "from darkness to light".the black album would have needed to be cleaned up production wise as i think lovesexy is one of his best produced albums .You could have had the spoken interlude beetween the albums that was in the middle of the lovesexy shows.what a great double album this would have been!scarlet pussey could have replaced when two r u love on the black side.
