Indeed, but there's very little in between, let's say prince and ella. But I also play Sly Stone, Motown, Tom Waits etc... but let's say that Prince and Ella take up th biggest lot on the ipod. Anita simply didn't make that much music like ella. The HQ-er formerly known as krokostimpy.

I've mentioned this several times before, but I don't listen to Prince most of the time. I go through phases where I listen him to a lot (while still listening to a lot of other music). But then I go through phases where I don't listen to a single note from the guy for months. I mostly listen to jazz/improvised music and all kinds of electronic music, mixed in with a decent amount of indie rock and metal, and occasionally some hip-hop (less and less of the later these days). Prince's music is always there and I know what stuff I really love. So when I'm frustrated and can't find anything new or interesting to listen to, it's like an old blanket I can just pull out of the closet and comfortably wrap myself up in.

I think 90% of all the music I listen to is prince's music. I really listen to Prince alot. I even watch the rave DVD at 7:00 in the morning, before I have to go to school. It's one of the reasons that I'm often late at school... Oops [Edited 1/8/11 15:49pm]

The only music I listen to is Prince and MJ. Before I became a Prince fan, I only listened to Michael's music, but now I listen to both ![]() "I never wanted to be your weekend lover..."

I don't think it is crazy, but as others have stated, it surely is a pity. Though Prince is my favorite artist and my most played (being that his music is so rich in diversity), I enjoy and listen to all kinds of music. Music itself is a beautiful thing, a form of art that people should be open minded to. I will admit though, I've gone an entire day listening to nothing but Prince, haha. And together we'll stare into silence.

i grew up listening to top 40 stuff mainly and then became obsessed with prince music for about 7 years -- it was my purple sanctuary in high school, and princeland is such a big place, it's easy to not feel the need to venture beyond it. then in 96 got into the internet to keep up with prince and susequently learned about neosoul and jazz and prince's musical roots. slowly branched out to respecting other artists. nowadays it's all song by song for me, whatever resonates with my soul, no matter who sings it. flowing through the veins of the tree of life...purplemaplesyrup

I've been listening to Prince's music only for, the last 10 years or so. Been a fan for 24 years, since downloading and the internet I keep finding new music or concerts that i have not heard before. I just never get bored with him there is so much music i don't have time left to listen to any other music (and I love it that way)

I went for about 20 years listening mostly to Prince. Mostly=97% I would hear a song by some other artist/band, buy their album/tape/cd and just be bored with it. For a decade I loved every song on every album that Prince put out. It was a standard I was accustomed to. All else seemed subpar. I also remember thinking that on other albums, all the song kinda sounded the same, whereas on Prince's albums every song was different, yet they all worked together. Prince's more current projects do not work for me like that anymore. I now just take the songs I like and leave the rest. I'm now also more open for doing that with other music. I'm firmly planted in denial

purpledoveuk said: There was a time many moons ago that I listened to Prince 95% of the time....so much so that I really can't stomach listening to many of hits now...they're just so boring and over familiar to my ears. I think that why I place so much expectation on his new music - I hoping to find something that fills that void. I'd still say Prince is my fav artist...but I don't listen to him very often anymore. 100% co-sign with you on this. I'm firmly planted in denial

Oh absolutely. My entire senior year of HS the only music I listened to was Purple Rain. 100% Seriously, I listened to nothing else. So to answer what may be perceived as a really condensing and ass'y comment, yes. I'm firmly planted in denial

I rarely listen to Prince these days. I still keep up-to-date with releases - official and otherwise - but the wealth of great music (old and new) out there, there's no way I'll be spending any considerable amount listening to Prince.

I haven't had a "Prince free day" for about 10- 15 yrs, I have a lot of different music in my general collection( my Prince music is fully catalogued & kept separately) but i would have to say I haven't listened to another artist since at least May-June last year! The last cd I bought that wasn't Prince was Lady GaGa's Fame Monster!
For me it doesn't matter what i feel like listening to Prince has released it & besides I could never get tired of listening to him, I haven't yet so i doubt I ever will!!!
Prince once tried 2 change his name 2 a symbol so that ur'e mother couldn't find him in the phonebook!

i understand listening to other artists, but prince has such an impressive catalogue, i dont think there's anything wrong with spending a considerable amount of time on his stuff. Unless you have listened to him so much that you've gotten tired of it.

I have so many favorite artists, there's no way I could devote all my time to just one.I go through different phases where I listen to a favorite artist for a few weeks, then I move on to another artist.I expect to go through another "Prince phase" in the next several months.

I think to remain open minded and not become obsessive, you must expand your experiences. The ancient greeks believed that any 'cultured' person must embrace as much as possible to become a fully knowledgable and intelligent being. The only people who excelled in, or chose, one artform to follow over all other experiences, were (ironically) slaves.

Considering that I never even heard of Prince 'til I was in my early 20s, I was pretty well grounded in other kinds of music before he came along. (I studied music - piano and voice - for a big part of my youth and listened mainly to classical music and Broadway soundtracks 'til I was in high school.)
I'd say that probably half of what I listen to is Prince, but I listen to a lot of other music, too. Right now, for instance, I have Bach's double violin concerto coming through the earphones. It's all what I'm in the mood for. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

The thing that is most incredible about Prince is the breadth and depth of his body of work. If you have been there from the beginning as I have, you have seen him evovle through the decades like no other artist. If you have every single note of Prince music that you could get your hands on and devised a comprehensive perspective, you have to be astonished by the scope and reach of Prince. This would make it easy to listen to only Prince if you had a balanced diet of all of his recordings.
For instance, if you just listen to 80s Prince, you are not getting all of what Prince has done. You have to hear all of it - each decade, each album - even the obscure internet releases - to get the whole picture. How amazing is it that the same artist who can make Xpectation and NEWS is the same guy who did Sign O the Times and Purple Rain? WHo does something like Kamasutra after doing Gold Nigga? And how to you get to the Rainbow Children after that? How do you take funk to the next level after James Brown and Sly while rocking like Hendrix and Chuck Berry and finding some fusion jazz and acoutic folk guitar/piano work in there somewhere? You have to be Prince to do it like he has.
You really get most popular genres with Prince if you hear it all (maybe not country but then...its country). I think it is important that you hear where Prince comes from (Sly, Hendrix , Santana, GCS, Earth Wind and Fire, Ohio Players, Kid Creole, Joni Mitchell, Led Zepplin, Beatles, Stones, Bowie, James Brown, George Clinton, Chaka Khan, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, etc) so oyu have to listen to something else sometimes - but get back to the Prince!

It's their right to listen to Prince or any other music. If it's not bothering them, it shouldn't bother you. It's really not that serious, just live and let live
As for me, I have periods of time where I listen to just one artist. It just so happens that right now, I'm in a Prince phase so that's mostly what I am listening to but I have played other artists in the last week but I'm right back to the Purple Guy [Edited 1/10/11 7:19am] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
