Where is Bart Van Halen when you need him to explain these difficult questions, and to debunk if Anna Stesia possibly could've been released in 1988, but written and recorded during the Rainbow Children sessions in 2001? But the real burning question? What was Graffiti Bridge about? After watching it a few dozen times, all I can figure is this:

Prince asks if there are really angels, and Morris Day likes to throw peppers around, and eat money, or something like that. The Time and Prince hate each other, and then battle with songs, where the Time samples Prince singing "Release It," way out of tune. The time has a magic keyboard sampler, that plays back Prince's voice suddenly in tune like it was recorded in the studio. Then some Angel chick shows up, and the plot thickens. She gets hit by a Jeep or a Rav4 or something, probably dies, and then Prince sings "Still Would Stand All Time," and everybody is now friends.

Damb!!! I explained Graffiti Bridge to myself!!! Yeah, this is similar to a post I wrote before, but I kind of had a Back to the Future Time travel moment trying to figure out how Prince wrote Anna Stesia in 2001, and released it in 1988....Bart...help us!!!

Well here goes, i'll give you my understanding of it:

It seems to be about a person who perhaps picks up/meets someone who appears 2 be female but is male(cross dresser), a decision is made to follow thru with whatever & then in a moment of regret decides that this is not what he wanted, & decides 2 become good & behave himself for the lord. So it goes on with him repenting for his sin/s & is forgiven, then carry's on helping spread the word of Jesus.

I think this is the closest Prince ever came 2 perhaps admitting that he had indeed experimented with the same sex, rumours were writhe about his sexuality, they have always been there. When Prince was younger he stayed with Andre Cymone & his fam & it was during this time that it was thought that they did a little bit of sexual experimentation so 2 speak, however these claims have neither been confirmed or denied!

Anyway this is my take on the Anna Stesia which i absolutely love & have danced 2.

Just enjoy the song, it really is quite thought provoking!!!

Prince once tried 2 change his name 2 a symbol so that ur'e mother couldn't find him in the phonebook!

eek No, Prince did not write this during the so-called Raimbow Children era. He wrote this in the 1980s...during the Lovesexy era... And if someone doesn't get this song, then that person doesn't get Prince. Listen to the Black Album and then sync into the Lovesexy album... It is about a change in perspective and spirituality... And it has nothing to do with JWs....

As you can see from this link, the song was recorded in late '87 or early 1988.

A live version was included on the 2002 One Nite Alone..Live release, but the song dates from the 80's.

From The Vault..

Re Anna Stesia.

Prince tells of an extreme state of lonliness and offers an explanation for The Black Album, "Between white and black, night and day, black night seemed like the only way." He goes on to describe a meeting with Anna Stesia, who tells him, "We could live for a little while, if you could just learn to smile, you and i could fly away." He realises that she can show him how to love, "the right way, the only way."

The song ends with Prince's promise that he is going to dedicate himself to spreading God's word.

The song title makes a play on the word anaesthesia, alluding to the painless state of grace that he found.

Anastasia is the female form of the Greek name meaning resurrection, which is what this song is about - Prince's resurrection from the "sins and darkness" of the Black Album period and his re-dedication to God, which basically the entire Lovesexy album is all about.

here are my 0,2 cts. First of all I agree with pt3121, either you get it or you don`t when it comes to Anna Stesia. The whole thing, melody, lyrics, coda and hypnotic groove of this tune has P written all over it and should be felt and digested rather then analyzed.

Title of the tune is a wordplay towards Anesthesia. Song progresses from longing to remove your ability to feel anything to encountering spiritual reality. The story goes that Anna Stesia portrays him meeting Ingrid Chavez in an Minneapolis night club (musice late nothing great) while tripping on E. (no way to differentiate - I took a chance) he talks about how his bodyguard at the time, Brooks looks like a ghost. Later they went to Princes studio where he was supposed to be very interested in her poetry/lyrics. Which leads the song to self-realisation about the creator and the final message. Love is God - God is Love. The main theme of Lovesexy.

On a a personel note, me thinx this is one of the most intimate songs of the little master. It´s like ur in his shoes or he is breathing down ur neck. So close that you can almost feel the despair, loneliness and need for company and love. Very vulnerable yet powerful at the same time. To me only Prince can pull of a combination like that.

In my top 5 list of all P songs. I love Anna Stesia. God bless Mr. Nelson for creating work like this.

I don't get it either. I know what the song is about, but it's never really appealed to me. Too bloated and self-consciously "artsy".

The whole album, really.

nod

Alphabet Street is what caught me to it. But later on in life, the beat to Anna Stesia made me wonder and like it.

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

While we are on the subject of Lovesexy, it always annoyed the heck out of me that the CD I bought has the entire album as a continuous sequence single track.

Are the majority of copies like this, or is the single track version very limited with most of the CD's sold as nine separate tracks? And has any other artist done something similar?

This song I believe relates to black album. A wish for oblivion. Can U relate? Man those were intense times for me. I remember when Prince son was born and died, this song came to mind because of the lyric "Gregory looks just like a ghost..." I think that is what him and Mayte named him, Gregory. I was like whoa. Freaked me out. I can't even remember where I heard/read that, the name.

I originally was kind of lost on this song..had to listen to it a couple times and really dig deep to see what Prince was trying to convey with it. I've loved the beat and feel of the song from first listen. It was only after feeling lonely did I go to that song specifically to listen to and then I got it!

This song is basically about being extremely lonely. Almost like sitting and being so lonely and you kind of slip into this hypnotic state of daydreaming or something like that. Prince sounds like he is just out of with despair. But then he finds the answer to his loneliness...GOD!

The song is genius of Prince. And the fact that he named it what he did and the obvious double references just further proves how amazing the man is! I love listening to this song, I just get lost in it and put it on repeat. Wonder mark in Prince's musical history IMO!

Same! After cassettes and records were phased out, i started replacing my Prince collection on cd. The first copy of lovesexy played individually, a housefire in 1995 took over half of my collection.

I slowly began the task of repurchasing my "lost albums" & only got around 2 replacing Lovesexy around 18 mnths ago( yeah i know i was really slow but I saved my tapes & 2 records so I could still listen 2 them) & was really annoyed that it plays in continuous sequence, I was like WTF! but then i read it on the cd under the Tracklist.

I'm am currently looking 4 a copy that doesn't play like that or a way of splitting them so I can at least burn it . Does anyone know how 2 do this at all, PLEEEEEEEZ!

It's about Prince's bad trip after which he decided to cancel the black album.

This sounds to me like a man curled up in a fetal position wishing for sleep and sweet release from the nausea and rushing thoughts.

Between white and black, night and day
Black night seemed like the only way...

So I danced

Music late, nothing great
No way 2 differentiate
I took a chance

Gregory looks just like a ghost
And then a beautiful girl the most
Wets her lips 2 say

"We could live 4 a little while
If U could just learn 2 smile
U and I could fly away, fly away."

I think a video for this would've been so awesome if Prince had dared go there in a realistic way. You could imagine the club sinking away from him into darkness behind Greg Brook's ghostly face like Jacob Marley or something.

No No No, you people have got it all wrong. The person that said it was part of the Rainbow Children sessions had to be right.

And if we could just rev up that time machine, so Fucking Tony M could be written out of Prince's history, we would be on to something. After that, have all his tours be like the best of the SOTT Tour merged with the best of the ONA Tour, and we really would be on to something.

I've been writing funny stuff on here dating back to when the old PPML was active, and finally somebody mentions it...lol. Not that I am really all that funny, but some of my stuff is classic, like my explanation of Graffiti Bridge...then again, trying to tell someone that I am funny is making it less funny that it ever was...damb.

I even changed my signature to make fun of Bart, posting it after he attacked me for spelling the name of the actor who played the Paramedic in Purple Rain wrong..."For Fuck's Sake..everybody knows the name of the extra who played the Paramedic who took the Kid's dad to the Hospital!!!"
