Favorite songs/lyrics from Emancipation?

I just got the album today in the mail, it's great!

Some of my favorites songs so far would have to be Face Down, Sleep Around, and One Kiss at a Time.

How about you guys?

Favorite lyrics too?

And together we'll stare into silence.

emancipation, lets have a baby, the holy river, face down, and sleep around.

face down:

Aint it kinda funny when u see the dawn?

sign the name they gave ya, but when the motherfuckers

turn around ass up, your what?

face down

its in his will, i read it, he shot to kill, he said it

for those who know the number and dont call

fuck all ya'll!

the holy river:

And then it hit 'cha like a fist on a wall
Who gave U life when there was none at all?
Who gave the sun permission 2 rise up everyday? (Ooh, oh yes)
Let me tell it (Go'n)
If U ask God 2 love U longer
Every breath U take will make U stronger
Keepin' U happy (happy) and proud 2 call His name (Go'n and say it)
Jesus (Jesus)

Don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
Purple music does the same 2 my brain
And I'm high, so high

I LOVE this album...it was my first Prince album that I bought myself! I LOVE mostly all the songs, but really love Somebody's Somebody, Let's Have A Baby, Emancipation, Sleep Around, One Kiss At A Time, Betcha By Golly Wow, Face Down, The Love We Make, Sex in the Summer, and The Holy River. Those are my fave 10 on the album. I really, really love Emancipation!! Perfect Prince cd for a rainstorm, so much to listen to, and such a great time in Prince's music history IMO.

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

It really is a great album[: I've heard a lot of mixed emotions about it, but to me, it's something I enjoy listening to.

Somebody's Somebody is another favorite of mine too!

Even though it's not his song, One of Us is my favorite. I love the passion, the emotion.

My other favorites ...

Sex in the Summer - great 4 driving with the windows down

Slave - funkiest track

La,La,La - been redone many times, this version is the best

The Human Body - asses wiggling

"Never let nasty stalkers disrespect you. They start shit, you finish it. Go down to their level, that's the only way they'll understand. You have to handle things yourself."

I am glad to see this album get some love around here smile While i still believe that Prince went overboard and there is a ton of filler on here, the best stuff is excellent. As a single disc, it would undoubtedly have been one of his best works ever and comparable to anything he's ever done in the 80's.

Songs like Soul Sanctuary and Somebody's Somebody are so addicitve. Sleep around would have made a great single a it is so catchy, The Holy River has sweet lyrics and some good guitar work, and Emancipation is a wonderful celebration of freedom. Those are the five strongest songs for me, but there are atleast 5 other keepers. As a single disc (my own personalized version), this is simply outstanding.

Allthough Emancipation is one of my least loved Prince albums, mostly because of the plastic sounding production, an overdose of contemporary/ autopilot R&B (stuff like Big White Mansion and Somebody, Somebody: the kind of material from him i never liked) and the length of the album.

But underneath that 'polish' there is some good songwriting / composing to be found, not as great as in the eighties, but solid at least. The redeeming songs for me are:

- Betcha by golly wo / La La La, means i love you: very sugarsweet cover versions, but impressive when it comes to the background vocals

- Damned If I do: quirky pop made better by the brass-outro: I happen to love afro-cuban music, so....

- In this bed I scream: very good composition, shame for the plastic production, apart from the left-field outtro.

- Curious Child: simple but effective piano ballad

- Holy River: a bit overrated maybe, but especially great because of the sincerity shining through in his vocal delivery. The part after the guitar solo is a bit too patchy for my taste, it should have been changed or just faded out. It ruins an otherwise very good song for in some way.

- Saviour: a kitschy take on a Purple-Rain like anthem, theatrically over the top, but sure a guilty pleasure.

- Face Down: the most left-field sounding song on the album, productionwise that is. He is using the sparse, almost avantgardistic type of instrumentation he was praised for in the eighties on a hip-hop composition in a rather ironic way, somehow it 'works'.

If folks are showing some love for Emancipation you had better believe I am going to be there. I LOVE this album! I had only just "discovered" Prince circa September, 1996 and his previous few albums (Come, The Gold Experience and, especially, Chaos and Disorder) were in heavy rotation. Emancipation was the first Prince album that I bought the day it was released and I still remember that it took me the best part of a week to listen to it all the way through. I can't say for certain but this is probably the Prince album that I have listened to the most. I didn't love every song right away but over time I have come to love them all. I never understood the complaints about the "plastic" sound of the album. To my ears Emancipation sounds no more dated than an album like 1999. The only slight flaw that I see in the album are the covers. "One Of Us" is clearly better than the Joan Osborne version but the other three add nothing to the original versions and probably should have been left off. I think it would have made Emancipation just a tiny bit more special if all 36 songs were Prince originals. The outtakes from this album are all fairly strong and would have fit on the album fine.

Nice to see the tide change with this album, I think people really got turned off by this album as it had the first cover songs on it, I've always loved this album and I think it is in his top 3 ever. I do think it crippled him in many ways, fan wise and business wise...........but he must of learned alot from this project.

It really is great that people are showing more appreciation for the album, it is chalk full of great sound and over all musical quality. The cover I loved was Lalala means I love you. It's a very charming song. As for the album in it's entirety, I think it was nice to see Prince try so many things. True, it is a bit much. But nonetheless, it is still a great album. It really displayed his yearning for change and freedom from the oppression he faced with Warner.

And together we'll stare into silence.
