Recorded in 1986 and remained unreleased untill 1998. The unreleased 1986 version is available on several bootlegs.

Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Actually you're the first person ever to hear it and you're right no one has ever mentioned anything about this unheard song on the org before, congratulations! wink

There's a boot call Crucial which has 2 version, a bothe the same but one has a long sax solo at the end and one has a guitar solo at the end. And then there's the officially released version on Crystal Ball set.

Sorry for the sarcasm, (Hint, top right of the screen there's a search function! don't be afraid to use it. it won't bite! wink )

yes, i love it, among my favs. I think it should have been on SOTT or any of his 90's albums. The bootleg version with the sax is superb too.

Just wondering: What makes the released version "horrible?"

I hate the Saxophone Version.

It's a perfect gem that doesn't get the rep it is rightfully owed. Whenever I'm listening to the Prince pod, that's the song I go to whenever I can't think of anthing else to listen to smile

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

The fact that it was released, apparently.... scratchy multi-generational bootlegs give a much warmer sound. lol

Is this boot a single composition, or is it part of a set? Just wondering where/what these alternate versions are on, I wanna give em' a look.

Not exactly.

Obviously "horrible" is not the right word, because "Crucial" is still a gorgeous and near perfect song.

I knew the song from 1989 in the two full versions, and when I discover on 1998 that P was releasing it on CB I was more than happy.

When I finally listened to it, even if great, the released version was a disappointment, for the following reasons:

1) 2 minutes and more of the original song butchered to make room for 14 boring minutes of "Cloreen Baconskin" (I like the jam, but 5 minutes of Cloreen are more than what I need and 2 minutes and more minus of Crucial is what really I don't need)

2) The ending is absolutely a shame, with a fade so fast that the track cuts abruptly if you don't listen also to "An Honest Man" after. Try to put it a self-made compilation, it's atrocious.

3) No problem with the "guitar version" choice (sax" or "guitar" I love both) but if you choose the "guitar version" what's the meaning of editing so badly the guitar solo?!?!? Listen to the break in the original full-lenght version and you will find a "mood" that is lost on the released version.

Here's my take.

In a strange way, I'm happy that P released "Crucial" officially but after 12 years I still wish to find a uncut original "Crucial" on something like a "BOC 2".
