TMBGITW Plagiarism Part 2

In 2007 Prince was found guilty of plagiarism by the Italian judicial system. Composers Bruno Bergonzi and Michele Vicino, claim "The Most Beautiful Girl In the World" borrowed heavily from their 1983 track "Takin' Me to Paradise". Personally, I just don't see the similarity. But while listening to an 80's station on Sirius radio this weekend I heard an old (and VERY popular) song and was shocked at how much it sounded like TMBGITW. TMBGITW is a direct rip-off of Whitesnake's "Is This Love". The bassline, the keyboards, the melody, the rhythm of the song -if anyone should have sued Prince for plagiarizing their material it should be Whitesnake. Go listen to the first 34 seconds of the song and see for yourself.

"Is this Love" is similar, but not the same. Everything about the two songs are different.

They are all similar in song structure and function. You'd have to imagine the Italian one in falsetto. Verses and chorus.

But aren't many many pop songs similar... just like these?

No. Not the same at all. Syllably (is that a word?) the title is similar. Other than that, musically totally different.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

A Journey song, the guitar solo. "Faithfully" I think.

Well, the chorus melody is exactly the same in "Takin' Me to Paradise". Not saying plagiarism happened, but I can see a lawsuit happening.

The whitesnake sounds less similar to me... it's just those accented chords right before the lyrics start that sound the same to me...

How can you say it's similar? It sounds nothing like TMBGITW. I can't hear it.

Some musicians find bits of an old song, loop it until they figure it out, then change a few notes here and there. This song does NOT sound like Prince's but I can clearly see that the structure of Prince's song could have easily come from this track.

So true. The transition chords and bass line are all similar, but not the same.

hmmm It reminds me more of Jackson's "Give Into Me", but that's because the chords are similar (except Bm).

By the way, has anyone heard Jimmy Page's version of Is This Love?

Yup. And there is a strong similarity there. Not sure it's a rip but "Faithfully" did come out in 1983 and it fits the bill of what Prince wanted to write (a Bob Seger-like track). The piano is very, very similar to Purple Rain in the chorus.

The age of the internet really leaves no stone unturned as regards song simiarities. I can hear both songs in elements of TMBGITW.

The Colonized Mind/Quit It ripoff is one of the most blatant Prince has been invoved in.

Listen to "94 East". Prince eventually used most of that for tracks for himself and the Time. "Do Yourself a Favor", "Jungle Love", "Lisa", "Anotherloverholeinyohead", "Sexy Dancer" are all based on ideas from that session. And weren't those songs written by Pepe Willie? Hmmm...

I wish u heaven

Prince apparently hadn't heard "Faithfully" until just before the release of "Purple Rain". When he heard the similarity, he called the guys in the group and told them he'd made a mistake - that his solo was just like theirs.

Journey said, "Hey, no problem. We took it as far as we could, and we hope you can take it farther. Good luck!"

No plagerism, no problem from Journey.
