Someone's detective work on "Can I Play With U"

"Can I Play With U?" by Prince and Miles Davis: which version on "Tutu"?
Posted by Olivier Bruchez on Nov 15, 2010 at 13:25 CET

Hi Marcus,

I hope you can "uncover the veil of mystery" surrounding "Can I Play With U?".

As we all know, Prince recorded a song called "Can I Play With U?" in late 1985 with his saxophonist Eric Leeds and sent it to Miles, who overdubbed some trumpet parts and sent it back to Prince in early 1986. At some point, the track was considered for inclusion on the "Tutu" album, right after "Full Nelson", if I recall correctly.

A 4:10 version of "Can I Play With U?" has been circulating on numerous bootlegs since at least the early 90s (if not the late 80s).

Now, recently (last week!), a new version of "Can I Play With U?" has started circulating among Prince fans. It's a longer (6:35), extended version, that was probably going to be released on the canceled 6-CD version of "The Last Word" in 2001-2:

The extended version doesn't feature Miles, but clearly features new parts by Prince, not present in the short version.

Question: to your knowledge, which version was intended for "Tutu", the short or long version?

Bonus question: can you confirm that only Miles and Adam Holzman added overdubs to the Prince version of the song?

Man, that's a long time ago. I seem to remember the version we worked on being a good deal longer than 4 minutes.

I wasn't around when Miles overdubbed on the track, it sounded like he and Adam were on it, though.

Does the short version have a Prince bass solo on it?

Marcus,

Thanks a lot for your answer!

The short version doesn't have a bass solo (there's a part with more prominent bass, but Miles and Eric Leeds are still playing). The long version has a bass solo in the "extended" portion (without Miles), so it might be the version your heard (and prepared for "Tutu", right?).

I'm wondering what Prince's Bass solo is like on this.

I haven't heard this yet.

no but 6 - 2 = 4 prince sends Miles a 6 minute song, the song ends up getting edited by MILES to 4 minutes. (which is the song that has been in circulation for years)

What makes you think whom ever has the original tape that was leaked out to bootlegs edited it? Or the bootleg companies who released it didn't just edited it. We have seen this before with outtakes like Sex of It (the complete version is not circulating), Computer Blue (the complete version is not circulating) we got snips and pieces of the good quality versions.

The short version of "Can I Play With U?" is not "included" in the long version. The mix is different, the intro/outro to the short version are different, etc.

Me too. Can't say I didn't half-heartedly look, but this song has just never really grabbed me beyond a passing, "Oh. Miles Davis and Prince." before I skip to the next track.

Wow, he really needs to cut that entire first verse and chorus section (the first 3 minutes) out as it mars an otherwise decent funk jam (the extended portion).

I still think it needs a lot of work. The outro vocals are much more in line with what I think they should be in the beginning. I've never been into the coy, peekaboo, Bambi vocals he has in the verses. It works much better when he kicks it up a few notches.

lol, I've always wondered why I've never heard Gangster Glam or any of the Gett Off remixes in the clubs I've been to. Some of us seem to be operating on the same wavelength. I was just re-reading "The Last Miles" yesterday and was surprised at the mention of the 6 min + version of Can I Play With U? that the author said was circulating. What struck me was my hardbound version is copyright 2005.

How did we all miss this circulating track for over 5 years?

I read the book ("The Last Miles") just a few months after it was published. And I don't remember that part about the 6-minute version of the track... Strange...

Now, I know that some recordings by Miles are circulating, but not widely circulating. For example, the complete recording of the June 18, 1970 concert:

I'm pretty sure it has been circulating for years, but just among a small (?) circle of collectors.

Same for the long version of "Can I Play With U?", I guess.

Same here. I bought the book when it was released, then re-read portions recently (looking specifically for info on Can I Play With U?

Oh, there are large amounts of Miles Davis performances circulating. Yes, not widely, but in some of the same places I find Prince's stuff.

Nice chapter in George Cole's "The Last Miles: The Music of Miles Davis, 1980-1991 (thanks Bart). It ends with the mention of two paintings by Miles inspired by the music of Prince.

I remember a Miles Davis painting hanging in or near the room by the vault in Paisley Park (which I visited during the Celebration in 2000). I remember a purple painting with the word PRINCE or MILES (I forget wich word it is).
